Acting Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
As we enter the final week of Term three, we look forward to acknowledging our past and celebrating everything that makes Emmanuel College a wonderful, dynamic learning community with Emmanuel Day on Friday. I hope that all families came through last Friday’s severe weather event without too much damage to property. I thank families for your support and understanding as all of Warrnambool managed the extreme weather event. I am grateful that all Emmanuel community members remained safe throughout the day and that the college came through with only some minor damage. A large trampoline that blew into the school grounds and came to rest against C wing around 6am was a surprising sight for our staff on arrival in the morning!
Child Protection Week
Last week was National Child Protection Week. This year we continue to champion the message ‘Every child in every community needs a fair go’.
In 2023, the message that ‘Every child in every community needs a fair go’ was complemented with the theme ‘Where we start matters’.
Where we start our lives in terms of where we live, the resources available to us, and the opportunities presented to us make a significant difference to our life outcomes.
Where we start as a service sector in offering children and their families support and assistance makes a significant difference to life outcomes.
Where we start as decision makers in addressing large complex policy problems such as child abuse and neglect, also has a significant personal, social and economic outcome.
Of course, where we start isn’t where we finish.
The aim of Child Protection Week is to bring together partners to focus on addressing the significant harms being experienced by children in Australia. By working collectively to change the trajectory of these children and families, we can reduce the number of children who may come in contact with the child protection system. The time to act is now.
‘Where we start matters’ for children, young people and their families. At Emmanuel College, all students enrolled, and any child visiting, have a right to feel safe and be safe. The wellbeing of children in our care will always be our first priority and we have zero tolerance to child abuse. The College is committed to the protection of all children from all forms of child abuse and demonstrates this commitment through the implementation of a comprehensive Child Protection Program designed to keep children safe.

Year 8 Picture Story Book Awards & Fit4Life Parent Series
Thank you to the staff for their generosity in running two successful and well attended events in the last fortnight. Thank you to Heads of English Catherine Ryan, and Library, Margaret Sinnott, and the Year eight English staff, for a hugely successful presentation of the Year eight picture story books and presentation of awards to students. And thank you to our Wellbeing Team who coordinated another successful Fit4Life parent series event. Long time Educational Consultant, Greg Mitchell gave an insightful presentation on Praise, Mindsets and Poise to a large audience and provided practical ideas that we can use to assist our young people.
Mercy Opportunities
Frayne Festival & Seeds of Justice Conference
Since our last newsletter Emmanuel students have represented the College in two annual Mercy events, the Frayne Festival and the Seeds of Justice Regional Conference.
Straight after the House Athletics Carnival, 22 Emmanuel College students embarked on a journey to Mount Lilydale Mercy College for the 2023 Frayne Speech Festival to engage in debates, public speaking and vocal choir competitions against students from our fellow Mercy schools. As in previous years our Emmanuel students performed admirably. A huge congratulations to our Voice Choir under the guidance of Mrs Brigid Foard who finished runners-up for a second year in a row.
The 2023 Seeds of Justice Regional Conference was held in Anglesea on Thursday 31 August and Friday 1 September. Emmanuel College was represented by four students and accompanied by Director of Faith & Mission – Jacinta Skilbeck. The students enjoyed interacting with students from various Mercy Schools, and approached the Conference with open hearts and open minds. They were fortunate to listen to an address from Abdul Rasuli from the Friends Ballarat Afghani Action Group. The students made the most of the opportunity to learn together about the plight of refugees and Asylum Seekers in today’s political climate here in Australia.
Congratulations
It is encouraging to see Emmanuel students are again taking their place in all manner of competitions at local, regional, state and national levels. Well done to Emmanuel students that have played, umpired or coached in the many Winter sport grand finals that have occurred over the past month. Well done to all of the students that represented Emmanuel at the WD Athletics last Tuesday. A number of strong performances contributed to Emmanuel winning the Overall School Champion award.
Congratulations to Year 10 student James Wood, who achieved the highest score in the Victorian Clay Target championships held in Echuca last Monday. James took out the Victorian Senior School Boys Champion for the second year in a row. Congratulations to fellow team member, Year nine student Bridie Mason, who achieved third place in the Junior Girls event and to Cody Brown (Year 10) and Kayla Foley (Year 7) who received minor placings. What a fantastic outcome for the students who all have several years of competition ahead of them. Thank you to the parents and families who travelled to Echuca with their children making the experience possible.
Meanwhile our all-conquering Year eight netball team defeated Catholic College Wodonga, Melbourne Girls College, Elizabeth Murdoch College and Catherine McAuley College Bendigo on their way to the final of the School Sport Victoria (SSV) state netball championship. The girls played a tight Grand Final against Rowville Secondary College, eventually coming out on top to take the title by 6 goals. The girls won the state title in Year 7 and I thank their coach Ms Abbey O’Brien for her support of the team.
Celebrating our shared history -Emmanuel Day
We will conclude the week and the term this Friday celebrating Emmanuel Day. Students are expected to attend the day which commences with a whole school liturgy followed by a range of fun activities, food stalls, talent quest and fund raising for our school’s two charities, Mercy Works and the Ruben Centre. We hope that students purchase a fundraising wristband prior to Friday. Students are encouraged to ‘dress up’ for our ‘Jungle Safari’ theme.
Please remember the day/term concludes at 2.25pm and Term 4 commences on Monday 2 October. We wish our Year 12 students well over the break as they get closer to their end of year VCAA examination period. It is pleasing to see that many students are taking up the opportunity to sit trial exams over the first three days of the holidays. If you are taking time off over the school holidays and travelling, I wish you a safe and restful journey.
A prayer for Mercy.
“Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.” Lord, like David in Psalms 4, we cry out to you as our authority and the author of true mercy. Thank You for being a God of compassion and love.
Help me see what you want me to see when You don’t lift the consequences of my actions. Help me to pay it forward to others when you do. Be that constant voice inside my head and the soothing arms around my heart. Mercy is a gift. Never let me forget to mirror to others the compassion You’ve shown me.
May the spirit of Mercy be with you and in all that you do.

Acting Principal
A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
Emmanuel Day - Friday Sept 15
We look forward to Emmnauel Day on Friday September 15. All students are asked to purchase a fundraising wristband for the day that will give them access to over 15 activities, including an inflatable bungee, mini golf course, silent disco, live music from Gabby Steel and many more activities.
Food vans will be available on the day for food purchases, along with a BBQ and donut/cake stall.. The canteen will be open for limited purchases. Most food vans will take cash or card with the BBQ, Twisto food van and donut stall being cash only. We ask that students bring gold coins and small notes if they choose to purchase food.
Homeroom/Mentor group Planning for 2024
The year level teams will shortly begin preparing homerooms and mentor groups for 2024. The year level team invests a great deal of time and discernment in developing homeroom groups for a new school year.
We are aware that moving into a new school year creates for some students a level of anxiety, however it is important to understand that we are dealing with a number of variables that influence the makeup of homeroom and mentor groups. Such variables include elective choices, students with individual learning plans, teacher observation and feedback and classroom dynamic, and in the senior school, the house group a student belongs to.
As students transition through the school, we also encourage them to work with other students and become less reliant on being with their friends, and as such build resilience to become independent learners.
In the senior school, students will be in a vertical homeroom structure with students from their house group from Years 10 to 12, whilst all academic classes are entirely dependent upon their subject selection. Students currently in Year 9 will not be moved out of their current house for senior school. Generally speaking we do not put siblings into the same mentor group however, if you would like to request siblings to be together, please email the Year 9 coordinator.
If you have any concerns about your child’s 2024 homeroom/mentor group, please communicate with their current Year Level Coordinator in writing by Friday 15 September, via email so we can keep your concerns on record.
This way we can hopefully address these concerns before homeroom/mentor group lists are published, as after publication, changes become very difficult to accommodate. Changes will not be made unless there are extenuating circumstances and a process for review would be followed by senior college leadership. Requests for specific teachers cannot be accommodated in fairness to all students.

Uniform Community Consultation Results
Thanks to all the students, parents and staff who completed the recent uniform survey, we had feedback from over 900 students, parents and staff. The feedback was very good overall and the focus group met to go through the survey results.
There was strong support to trial an extended transition period from winter to summer with over 85% of all respondents keen for this to happen. We introduced this extended transition period last week, where students have until the end of October the opportunity to choose between summer or winter based on weather. The focus group and feedback in general would suggest that whilst supporting the extended transition, it is still important to have a separate summer and winter uniform and set periods of time for these uniforms to be worn by all students.
From Term 4 we will also see the introduction of the choice of navy or white sport socks to be worn with PE uniform, again this option is based on survey feedback. We are also going to meet with the manufacturer about the fabric and style of some uniform items. There will be no other changes at this stage to any other uniform items.
We remind parents that all students in Year 7-9 are required to wear college logo shorts or college logo tracksuit pants ONLY with the PE uniform. We have seen some students wearing branded tracksuit pants and these are not acceptable as they are not Emmanuel uniform.

Year 11 Health and Human Development
Students have been learning about the PIES (Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social) development during the various stages of learning.
We have attended West Warrnambool Primary school to observe and interact with those in the 'childhood stage' of lifespan. During this session we had books read to us, helped drawing and writing stories. We had a shared fruit break, which was supplied by Food share.
Another excursion we attended was at Koala Childcare centre where we played with those in the infancy and early childhood stage of the lifespan. This was a great opportunity to play, observe and monitor emotional development and the variations in these at this age.
During Week 8, the 4x Year 11 HHD classes attended Gillin Park as part of their studies. It was a fantastic opportunity to interact and ask many detailed life questions of those in the late adulthood stage of the lifespan. I think the residence got as much out of this visit as the students.
One great moment was seeing student Hannah Roberts coincidentally seeing her 104 year old great-grandmother.
We are very thankful that we have been able to put our theory into practical observations and interactions to help with learning.

Frayne Festival
On Friday the 25th of August Emmanuel students participated in the Frayne Public Speaking Competition held at Mount Lilydale Secondary College. Our students participated in all of the three competition sections: Voice Choir, Public Speaking and Debating.
Our debate team of Ally Rowbottom, Paige Rea, Rianna Kelly, Diana Fernandez, Sithum Kumerapparuma, and Scarlett Gurry had two really difficult debates around the ideas that AI is a positive thing and Political parties need more diverse representation. They did a great job, but were unsuccessful.
Satwika Sivasankar represented Emmanuel College in the public speaking section, delivering a speech on the topic ‘Intelligence is not enough’. Satwika did a fantastic job and made it through to the final where she had to deliver an impromptu speech, as well as her own speech again. While she didn’t win, she did an excellent job to make it into the final.
Lastly, our Voice Choir team, coached by Brigid Foard, presented their interpretation of the poem ‘Fireflies’ by Omar Musa. The team was made up of Jess Kelly, Lena Watty, Frankie Rose Buscombe, Gemma Crowe, Tessa Battersby, Lokesh Narra, Layla Kermond, Amelia Foard, Belle Plozza, Flynn El Hage, EJ Gass, Matilda Woodward, Jess Bushell and Sierrah Chuck. They were very well prepared and did a fantastic job, coming second in a very high calibre competition.
Overall, the students did a fantastic job across the board and truly did their school proud.
Thank you to all those who competed.

VCE VET Health
An important component of the VCE VET Health course is connection with local health services and allied health practitioners, allowing students to experience a variety of health careers they may not have previously considered.
On Thursday August 24, the unit ½ class were very fortunate to engage in an immersive experience at Tim Rayner Audiology. Prior to our clinic visit, Audiologists Abeer and Steph visited Emmanuel College to introduce students to the world of audiology as we delved into the anatomy and physiology of the ear.
Sophie Marris, Year 11:
Tim Rayner's Audiology workplace allowed me to take a tour of every area. I observed the listening rooms and the range of ear devices they employ to conduct the various exams. I was fortunate enough to undergo many hearing tests at Tim Rayner, and it was discovered that my hearing is quite good. I thought it was intriguing that the walls of the hearing test rooms were carpeted to keep the space fully silent. I learned about the ear and its functions from the entire team, who were all very nice. In order to unclog and cure the ears, the staff also demonstrated how to blow up a balloon with their nose. It was also incredibly fascinating to be able to use a camera to examine inside my ear and my ear drum. I had an ear mould created from the inside of my ear after inspecting it. I discovered how to create an ear mould and its purpose for those who order them, such as swimmers who use them to prevent ear damage when swimming. Our ear mould was ours to keep and bring home. Overall, it was a fantastic experience that made me feel like I know a lot more about the ears than I did before I visited Tim Rayner Audiology and undoubtedly opened my eyes to a career in audiology after I graduate from high school.
Millie Shalders, Year 11:
On the 24th of August, our Allied Health class took an excursion to Tim Rayner’s Audiology clinic. We saw many different devices that the team use to test their clients' balance and hearing skills. We all experienced our own ear mould being created by Tim. I discovered that I have very tiny ears. Tim let me roll the rest of the mould liquid into a bouncy ball and we all got to keep our ear moulds. We went into the next room where we had a pressure test done and Emily had to blow a balloon up with her nose. Abeer informed us that the pressure in our ears was all good. Then Stephanie tested our hearing. My hearing is mostly alright, we also found out that Hayley has perfect hearing. After getting our hearing tests done we all travelled outside to test the amount of sound that balloons caused. Stephanie and Abeer used a special device to figure out the amount of sound that the balloons produced. We all learned that the bigger the balloon the more sound would be produced when it was popped. Overall the excursion was very interesting and a fun experience.
In Year 12, the unit 3/4 sequence of VCE VET Health comprises scored assessments contributing to students’ ATAR score. In addition to an enjoyable session, this immersive experience provided links to the scored unit ¾ learning outcomes.
We thank Audiologists Abeer and Steph for their time and Tim for his continued support of our VCE VET Health program.

Student Voice - Year 9 Immersion Week
During Term 3 2023, Emmanuel College’s 9@RICE program undertook an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. They were given the opportunity to visit Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy, the National Electoral Education Centre and the Australian War Memorial, amongst other activities and attractions. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education and to assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Emmanuel College is greatly appreciative of this funding.
Jaylah Moloney, Year 9
Two weeks ago, 9D, 9E and 9F went to Canberra. We drove 12 hours on the bus up to Canberra. We stayed there for a week and we did heaps of fun activities.
On our first day, we went to the New Parliament House. We learnt about how Parliament works and got a little tour. We then went to the Zoo where we had lunch and a tour. We fed a few of the animals. After the zoo, we went to the Mint to see where and how the coins were made. Our nighttime activity was going to the Arboretum. We did orienteering in the gardens trying to find all the numbers. This was really fun and one of my highlights.
The next day, we went to Laser tag which was another one of my highlights, this was so fun. After Laser tag, we visited the MOAD at Old Parliament House and the National Museum. After, we got some free time so we went shopping. For the nighttime activity, we went to Bounce and it was very fun.
On our last day, we went to the NEEC and learned about voting. We then went for a drive to look at all the Embassies that are in Canberra. We went to Questacon which was lots of fun. There was a massive slide that you had to hang from and drop down but it was really scary. After that, we went to the Australian War Memorial where we did the Last Post Ceremony. A few people from our group laid the wreath while we heard the story of a soldier who fought in the war. Our final activity was visiting the Big Issue. We learnt about homelessness and heard the story of a person who experienced being homeless.
My favourite parts of this camp were the arboretum, Laser tag, shopping and Questacon. This Canberra trip was really fun and we all really enjoyed it. I loved this camp.
Green Group @ Emmanuel
The Green Group @ Emmanuel have been busy this week decorating an old bin to be use on Emmanuel Day to collect Soft Drink Aluminium cans. These can will be stored and in November will be recycled in the Container deposit scheme | Victorian Government for 10c each. The funds will be donated to the Emmanuel Day Charities.
You may like to start collecting containers at home in preparation for this program starting in November. The cans, fruit boxes and plastic containers are not to be squashed in this process and we can leave the lids in plastic bottles. Each will gain 10c each and you can choose to receive the fund, donate to charities, sporting clubs or schools. The best part of this program is that they containers are fully recycled.
After Emmanuel Day, the Green Group @Emmanuel are going to place the bin in the canteen to contiue to collect cans. We have decorated the bin in chalk to ensure that we can promote the different collect types in 2024. We are especially excited about recycling fruit boxes, as these are currently not recycled in our yellow bins. We plan to re-purpose the bin again, to promote this next year. Of course, first promoting drinking water and using reusable bottles where possible.
Well done to Green Green @Emmanuel for their endless ideas, time and passion, especially Maya Furphy in Year 7 for this idea. Maya saw a bin like this on a recent holiday and came home with photos for inspiration for us. Well done, Maya on looking everywhere for sustainable solutions!
If you have any ideas for the Green Group @Emmanuel, we are always looking for new members, email Mrs Jones for more information, bjones@emmanuel.vic.edu.au
Look out for our next program “NO PLASTIC in lunch in November.”
