Acting Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
Welcome Back
Welcome to Term Two. I hope that many families were able to have some time to relax and refresh over Easter and the holiday break. I was very grateful for a few days in Melbourne and time to catch up with my three girls. I attended Easter Sunday Mass at Our Lady Help of Christians church and I wanted to congratulate Fr Bill Lowry our College Chaplain who presided over his first Easter Mass.
Staff Professional Development Day
Term Two began with a slightly shorter week for our students with the teaching staff and learning diversity assistants participating in a staff professional learning day last Monday. All students learn differently and some need additional support to ensure that they can access the curriculum and programs that we offer. Close to 20% of our student cohort require some form of intervention and support with their learning. Providing our staff with professional learning opportunities in the area of learning diversity is essential to creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students to achieve their best.
We were very fortunate to hear a presentation from Sally Rippin, Australia’s highest-selling female author who shared with us her personal journey as a parent of a child with dyslexia. Sally’s most recent book, Wild Things provides many interesting insights into helping neurodivergent students. We also had an amazing presentation from one of our own students Ebony Wilson. Ebony who is in Year 10 gave a powerful and passionate presentation on ADHD. It was incredibly inspiring to listen and watch one of our students teach her teachers about how they can support students in the classroom.
Term 2
Whilst there are generally fewer disruptions this term, the College calendar still has a number of excursions/events/activities for our students to engage in across the next two months. I hope that students are now well settled into school routines and their semester one subjects. The next eight weeks are a valuable opportunity for students and teachers to work together to maximise learning outcomes for students.
This term we welcome back staff members Sean Fitzgibbon, Conor Devine, Rebecca Thompson and Caroline Garner who were all on leave for the first part of the school year. I also extend a warm welcome to Brad Denny. Brad will be completing some short-term teaching replacement positions and will be assisting in the humanities faculty. Brad most recently has been teaching at Santa Maria College in Northcote.
Student Achievements
Congratulations to our College Swim team who last week competed at the State Swim titles in Melbourne. A team of 35 students represented the College with great pride and determination and were successful in winning 8 medals and placing 4th across all schools in the state. I would also like to congratulate the 18 newest members of our student leadership team. It was wonderful to attend the Year 7 Leaders Induction Ceremony last Thursday. Our four College Captains led the assembly and it was very heartening to hear just how many of the year 7 students were willing to put themselves forward for leadership and to assist and serve their peers and school community.
Over the holidays a number of Emmanuel students participated in a range of sporting events at state and national level. I congratulate all students on their achievements. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the amazing achievement of Year 12 Rice House student and College Captain, George Stevens who was selected as Captain of the Under 18 AFL Academy Squad. George led the Australian team against the Port Adelaide Magpies in Adelaide during Gather Round.
ANZAC Day
On the first day of term staff and students paused classes just prior to recess to commemorate ANZAC Day 2023. A short service was held over the PA and wreaths were laid at both campuses as a sign of our respect and thanks to all men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in war so that we can have the freedom and peace that we share in our country today. I would like to acknowledge and thank the many Emmanuel students and staff that represented the College at the various ANZAC services held on the 25th April.
Many families have their own personal stories of relatives who have served or are currently serving our nation in the armed forces. My grandfather (WWII) and father (Vietnam) both fought for our country. Their service always makes me incredibly proud and grateful around this time and whenever I travel around Australia, I often take time to discover some of our countries war memorials and statues. Earlier in the year I visited Newcastle which has a stunning war memorial boardwalk which is right on the cliffs edge over the top of the Pacific Ocean.
CBC 60 Year Reunion – Classes of 1962 & 1963
Yesterday I had the privilege of spending some time with the alumni of CBC Warrnambool at their 60-year reunion. A group of about 30 past students, partners and two former teachers, Br Trevor Gibbons and Br Brian Cleary joined for a Mass and tour of the Rice campus. It was fascinating to listen to their memories of their time at school. Classes had up to 70-80 students in one room. One class member told me how on a few occasions he would throw his school bag out the window from the upstairs classroom in M block near the end of the day so that it would allow him to be closer to the front of the line for the bus. Some alumni travelled from overseas and interstate for the event and I’m sure that they enjoyed sharing a meal at lunch and reminiscing about the good old days at school.
School Photos and College ID Cards
For families that ordered 2023 school photos you should have received these during the last week. Students will receive their college ID card in the next few days. These cards are official College cards that provide students with appropriate identification, showing their school photo, name and birthdate. Students can use these cards for job interviews, student travel concession and other purposes when a photo ID card is required. Thanks to the Development team for their organisation of the school photos and to Glen Watson Photography for taking and producing the photos.
CBC Catch Up & Edmund Rice Feast Day
Friday May 5th is the feast day of Blessed Edmund Rice the founder of the Christian Brothers. Tonight, we welcome alumni of CBC Warrnambool, gathering in the Emmanuel Centre for their annual ‘CBC Catch Up”. I’m sure there will be many stories and laughter shared about old times at the CBC campus which is now home to our 9@RICE program. I’m certainly looking forward to hearing from inspiring alumni Br Frank O’Shea who will be speaking online from Africa during the night. I wish all involved in the evening and enjoyable time and thank Alumni Coordinator, Candice Hampstead for her planning of the event.
Public Holiday this Week
Finally, a reminder that the students will have a day off school this coming Thursday 4th May as a result of the public holiday for the May Races.
Creed of Edmund's People
We believe the God fire burning in our hearts can transform both ourselves and our world.
We believe we are called by God to a deep personal relationship with Jesus, the lover of all creation, as a brother.
We believe we are called to be good news people.
We believe we are called to be stewards of creation.
We believe we are called to keep our hearts and minds open and attentive to God’s will.
We believe we are called to witness by prophetic action to our option to the poor, the oppressed, and people at the margins.
We believe we are called to immerse ourselves in the culture in which we live and work.
We believe in community which is prayerful, inclusive and welcoming.
We believe that it is in our own fragility that we can accompany others in theirs.
We believe in sharing eucharist and reconciliation that we are drawn beyond ourselves to the mystery of God.
We believe others share the charism of Edmund, and are one with us in living it out.
We hear the call to live justly, love tenderly and to walk humbly with our God.
St Joseph: Pray for us,
May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do
Amen

May - Diversity Month@Emmanuel
Throughout the month of May we are celebrating diversity within our school community. We aim to raise awareness of neuro-diversity, sexual diversity, learning diversity and cultural diversity to ensure that we are inclusive and supportive of all in our school community.
Year 11 leaders are leading various activities throughout the month.
Students are encouraged to wear a year level allocated colour for our casual dress day on Wednesday May 17 for IDAHOBIT day. International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) celebrates LGBTQIA+ people globally, and raises awareness for the work still needed to combat discrimination. We will also have a full school assembly during reconciliation week celebrating indigenous culture.
Uniform
Students are required to be in full winter uniform by Monday May 8. Students are required to wear their blazer to and from school at all times whether travelling in a car, bus or walking , including Year 12 students wearing the blazer over their hoody top.
In 2022 we transitioned to the new college logo track suit pants for year 7 & 8 students. Please note that students now in Year 9 for PE may wear shorts or tracksuit pants, however if they choose to wear tracksuit pants they are required to wear the college navy logo track pants as this was a requirement last year when they were in year 8.
New Items
We have a new PE uniform item that caters for sunsmart and extra warmth under the rugby top available for students to purchase for $46.95. Also a new winter scarf that will be available for purchase for $23.50. Both items are available from the uniform shop

PACER Rebate
Mr Paul Aberline, Teaching Staff
In term one this year, three class of students from Emmanuel College 9atRICE program have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Which Emmanuel College in greatly appreciative of.
Resilience Immersion Week
Caitlyn Belleville, Year 9
On Monday, our first day of camp, we stayed at school for the day completing a wide range of activities, this included a perfectly imperfect workshop, a guest speaker Ben Harkin, and some homeroom activities to finish off the day.
The next day we waited outside the Rice Hall before being taken to our starting point of the great ride. I was so excited, only after the first 30 minutes my knees weren’t very excited for the rest of the ride! Before I knew it we were in Port Fairy just finishing our ride of 38km, yes 38, I didn’t believe it at first myself. That wasn’t the only surprise I had that day, the other was clumsy me managing to not fall off my bike! After we packed up the bikes we walked another 7km along the beach to Killarney. The nice (cold!) water reaches my feet, then my ankles, and whoops too close right up my shins!!
On Wednesday we were walking again back to Levy’s point. We left camp at about 9 o’clock getting us to Levy’s at 1 o’clock. It was nice when you found the right part of the sand to walk on. Not too hard, not too soft, not too chocolate pudding, just right!! When we got back to school we were very tired, except for me! Then at about 2:30, the sugar hit began to fade…I had to keep up the energy one way or another!! We had hot chips and a movie for those who weren’t picked up early.
On Thursday, our final day, we went canoeing down the Merri River 7 km North (I think it was North..). This was a great day, we all had a great time, especially those who had an accidental dip in the cold water!! My partner and I had a great time together, when we found our lefts from our rights we made a great team, the reeds helped us to find our way...
My highlight of camp was listening to Ben Harkin and his example of the way he has shown a brilliant amount of resilience over the course of his life. I was also very good at finding the tree on our bike ride, it was a tight corner!! And finally, I personally loved canoeing, it was a great way to finish the week.
Exploration Immersion Week
Georgia Ierodiaconou, Year 9
The exploration immersion week was focused on learning about Aboriginal Australian culture and world religions. We started our week by going on a day trip to Melbourne and visiting the Islamic Museum of Australia. We also visited the Tara Institute Buddhist Temple.
On Wednesday, we did an amazing race around Warrnambool which I think was a highlight of the week for most people. We also travelled around Warrnambool with Uncle Rob Lowe and visited sites that have significant Aboriginal History.
On Thursday we went 10 pin bowling and learned about Indigenous art with Sherry Johnstone. We did a painting workshop and created our own art using Indigenous symbols. Finally, on Friday we visited Budj Bim National Park and went on a cultural tour.
Overall I think we learned a lot in this immersion week and had a great time.
Community Immersion Week
Fionn Lucardie, Year 9
Our Canberra excursion included visits to the Old and New Parliament House, Questacon, Australian War Memorial, Arboretum, and Bounce. These activities were fun and enjoyable including giving us the opportunity to learn about Australia. It was also great to burn some energy at bounce and go shopping in the Canberra CBD. The group was also given the opportunity to meet Dan Tehan and learn about his role in Australian politics. One of the students' favourite activities was going to the War Memorial and learning about the history of the Anzacs. We also had the opportunity to observe and role play at the parliament house. Finally, this was a great experience, especially giving us free time to learn about how the city works and exploring the area.
Student Voice - Year 8 Easter Celebration
Emmanuel College Year 8 Leaders held their first year level initiative at recess last term, and a yummy one at that! For morning tea the Year 8 leaders dressed up in their bunny ears and handed out hot cross buns for Year 8 students. With various flavours to choose from, students quickly grabbed their hot cross buns, and a couple of other year levels floated around hoping there may be some left over! Well done Year 8 Leaders for a wonderful initiative to share with your class mates in the lead-up to Easter and the school holidays.
Reflection by Luke Robson, Year 8 Leader
The way Emmanuel celebrates Easter is great!!!
The leaders helping out with the hot cross buns was great. This showed that the leaders the Year 8's picked are worthy of their the spot. Having the leaders help was good so we didn't need volunteers. This is another way that we can get together as a Year 8 community.
Emmanuel's Year 8 students and others should embrace the day and remember that it isn't just about chocolate and food, it's about Jesus dying on the cross for us.
I encourage all Emmanuel students to get behind Easter celebrations for this great school.

"Empowering Parents: A Guide to Supporting Your Child's Learning" Series - Feedback
Dear Parents,
At Emmanuel, we value your involvement in your child’s education. Your response to the feedback on your child’s progress at school is important.
This year we have introduced SIMON Digests, which are fortnightly email summaries of your child’s attendance and recent assessment marks.
You can access more detailed information about your child by logging into PAM and clicking on the button with your child’s photo. From the left menu, choose Learning Tasks. You can click on each subject to get a list of tasks and marks. Click on each task to view teacher feedback and rubrics. Most assessment task will have written comments or rubrics and these are written to the student to help them know where they are at the moment and what they need to do to improve.
As your child continues their educational journey, it's important to understand the value of feedback from their teachers. Feedback is an essential component of learning, and it provides valuable insights into your child's progress and areas of improvement. However, sometimes feedback can be confusing or overwhelming, especially if you're not sure how to interpret it or how to support your child with it. Here are some tips to help you understand and support your child with feedback from their teachers:
- Understand the purpose of feedback
Feedback is given to help your child improve their learning and reach their full potential. It's not meant to criticize or judge them, but to provide constructive guidance and support. Teachers want your child to succeed, and feedback is one way to help them do that. - Read the feedback carefully
Pay attention to the areas where your child is doing well and the areas where they need improvement. This will help you understand their strengths and weaknesses and give you an idea of how to support them at home. - Talk to your child about the feedback
It's important to talk to your child about their feedback and help them understand what it means. Encourage them to ask questions and seek clarification if they're not sure about something. This will help them take ownership of their learning and develop a growth mindset. - Use feedback to set goals
Feedback can be used to set goals for your child. Identify areas where they need improvement and work with them to set achievable goals. This will help them stay motivated and focused on their learning. - Support your child at home
Finally, support your child at home by providing them with the resources and tools they need to improve. This could mean helping them with homework, providing additional reading material, or accessing support. Emmanuel runs Study Hall after school at the McAuley library every day. For year 7s and 8s, there are tutors available on Mondays until 4:30. For all students, there are Maths teachers available on Wednesdays until 4:30 and English help on Thursdays.
In conclusion, feedback from teachers is an important part of your child's learning journey. By understanding its purpose and how to interpret it, you can support your child's learning and help them achieve their full potential. Remember, your child's success is a partnership between you, your child, and their teachers.
Sincerely,
Ms Simone Rolfe

Unit 1/2 Psychology
Living neurodivergent in a neurotypical world!
My Unit 1 /2 Psychology class were privileged to have Molly Beadle from Year 12 share her story of living with Autism. The class learnt so much from this talk; not least of all, the significant differences in mirror neurons between atypical and neurodiverse brains of autistic children. Molly’s stories about her interests in dinosaurs, Marvel, Star Wars and Greek Mythology and how easy it is for her to learn and retain this information really is a ‘superpower’ that inspires awe! It also helped for us to understand more about the types of things that Molly finds difficult, such as change, eye contact, small-talk- to name a few- and how she manages this in her day-to-day life. We also learnt about the potential link between trauma during pregnancy and the experience of neurodivergence later in life. There are no stories like this in any of our text books, so it was enlightening for us to have Molly’s insights and teaching.
I would also say that it was fascinating to see how Molly chose to utilise technologies to engage her audience; her choice of animation and simulation videos were very entertaining and informative.
I honestly think we all have the potential to change the world with our unique and diverse stories. Now is a very important time for people who understand neurodivergence, as this is an emerging area for discussion in both education and broader society.
Thank you to Molly!

Year 9 Hospitality
Last week, Year 9 Hospitality Studies students participated in a barista course at SWTAFE. They had a lot of fun making cappuccinos and macchiatos with Hayley, their trainer. Students can add a barista skills qualification to their resumes as many will be starting to seek work in the hospitality industry. Students also put what they have learned into practice by completing a ‘food critic’ task at a local café. Students really enjoyed great food and service as they considered a range of important aspects of hospitality operations (staff, ambiance, food, timing of serve, cost).
