Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
Open Evening
I trust those of you who visited the College for our recent Open Evening received a warm welcome. I was very pleased with the way the College was presented to prospective and current families and immensely proud of the more than 180 students who greeted visitors, led tours of the school or participated in learning activities that provided an insight into learning in action at Emmanuel. We are now receiving enrolment applications for year seven and all year levels for 2024, with the closing date for year seven applications Friday 28 April.
Year 9 Immersion Week
This last week has been immersion week for the year nine students as part of their 9@RICE program. During the course of the year the students will experience three immersion weeks linked to the learning areas of community, resilience and exploration. In the last week various groups have travelled to Canberra and Melbourne visiting civic and religious institutions, while closer to home, classes cycled, paddled and hiked in the local area and camped overnight at Kilarney. The local groups also completed a great race, learned about indigenous language and art and visited the World Heritage site at Budj Bim. Over the course of the year, the 9@RICE students will experience all three immersions designed to extend and challenge them physically and mentally. I am extremely grateful to the Emmanuel staff who organise the experiences, in particular Year Nine Community Coordinator, Paul Abeline, and all our staff who make the opportunities possible.
Laptop Cases from East Timor
We’ve also recently seen the arrival of the year seven student’s laptop cases. These aren’t ordinary, mass-produced laptop cases. These are individually hand made by the women of Bonecca de Attauro in East Timor. The school’s partnership with Attauro Island, East Timor, was established almost ten years ago by the then recently graduated year twelve students who travelled to Attauro Island for their alternative schoolies project; in essence, a community service project sharing their knowledge and language with the Island’s school children. The annual visits and a desire to cement the partnership led to our decision to purchase laptop covers from Bonecca each year. There are however challenges involved every year as cargo transport from East Timor is irregular at best and very expensive. The COVID lockdowns in both countries made arrangements even more challenging. I am extremely grateful to staff member James Laidler and James' wife Claire who have dedicated so much to the relationship enabling us to continue purchasing the covers from Bonecca even though our students are at present unable to travel to Attauro. It was a happy day unpacking the boxes of laptop covers when they arrived at Emmanuel as the following photo attests.
Catholic Identity
Catholic schools aim for continuous school improvement. An essential element of improvement is understanding how students perceive the Catholic identity of their school and what they might like Catholic identity at Emmanuel College to look like in the years ahead. Students have an important voice in our planning and so we invite all Emmanuel students to participate in the Enhancing Catholic School Identity (ECSI) Survey. In the weeks ahead, students will be asked to complete the online ECSI survey during an RE lesson. At no time will students be named or identified in the survey; their responses are guaranteed to be anonymous. I look forward to the contribution our students’ responses will make to improving our school. Similarly, parents will be invited this week to complete the ECSI parent survey. Information about the survey will be shared with all parents this week via Operoo.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Grace Kelly in year 11. Grace will be competing at the Athletic Nationals in a few weeks in Brisbane having performed very well in State competitions in recent weeks. Pending her times and performance, Grace is a chance to be selected for the Youth Commonwealth Games in Trinidad in August this year. We wish her well for personal bests and selection for Trinidad.
Congratulations is also extended to Leigha Lehmann from the graduating class of 2022 whose photography has been selected for Top Shots. Top Shots is MAph's (formerly MGA) annual award and exhibition celebrating the best photomedia work produced by the students of VCE Art, Media, Studio Arts and IB Visual Arts in 2022.
Parent Teacher Student Conferences
This is a very short week for students with classes finishing at 3.30 Wednesday 5 April. Parent Teacher Student Conferences commence at 4pm Wednesday and conclude at 7pm, and recommence the following day at 9am running through to 1pm. The conferences facilitate the provision of feedback about student progress and we encourage students to attend the conferences with their parents and guardians. The time for each conference is short but sufficient to provide essential feedback. Should any of your child’s conferences identify concerns that cannot be resolved in the timeframe, it is requested you conclude the conference and arrange another time with the teacher that will allow for lengthier discussion.
Things to Note
I wish Assistant Principal Justin Houlihan a safe journey to Dublin during these holidays. Justin is attending an immersion experience conducted for Mercy Education by the Sisters of Mercy at the traditional home and birth place of the sisters in Ireland. The Mercy International Centre in Baggot Street was conceived and built by Catherine McAuley and opened in 1827. Justin will join a group of Australia pilgrims and all will experience the Mercy story at its birthplace. Travel well Justin and return safely.
I also wish to advise you that I am taking a small amount of additional leave either side of this term break. I will pass the principal’s baton to Michael Wrigley tomorrow (Tuesday 4 April) who will be Acting Principal until Monday 8 May when I return. I thank Michael for his generosity undertaking two roles at once and enabling me to take the extra time off.
We Share our Condolences
The Emmanuel College community shares its care and condolences with Josephine and Mary Collins on the sudden death of their mother Amy last week. We reach out to you in this time of deep sadness and reassure you of our ongoing support. At this sad time, please remember Josephine and Mary in your thoughts and prayers.
May Amy know the loving embrace of God, and may perpetual light shine upon her.
May she rest in peace. Amen.
This week is the most important week in the calendar of the Christian Church. Yesterday, Christian churches around the world celebrated Palm Sunday, a reminder of the extraordinary impact Jesus’ words and actions had on the people of his time. However, the tide quickly turned against him resulting in his crucifixion just days later on Good Friday. These events conclude the season of Lent and are remembered in our local Catholic Churches in Warrnambool and the surrounding areas this week and next weekend, the time we call Easter. Our local churches are open to all and welcome you to attend and experience the retelling of the stories that have given rise to our Catholic Emmanuel community.
Creator God, help us live a Lent focused on freedom, generosity, and encounter.
Give us hearts hungry to serve you and those who need what we have to give.”
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.
Mr Peter Morgan
Principal
A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
As Term 1 draws to a close at the end of the week, I congratulate all students on their positive efforts throughout the term. As well as working well each day in classes we have also seen students involved in sports day, camps, retreat days, excursions, immersion week, and open evening.
I congratulate and thank all students who assisted at our open evening with over 180 students helping out on the night taking tours and working in spaces around the school. We have had some really positive feedback about our students.
Winter Uniform
In term 2 students are required to wear winter uniform. The first two weeks in term 2, which are both short weeks, will be a transition period, students can wear summer OR winter uniform, using this time to finalise winter uniform requirements as they transition to being in full winter uniform by Monday May 8 (Week 3). Students are required to wear their blazer to and from school at all times, including Year 12 students over their hoody top.
As students in Year 7 & 8 are permitted to wear PE uniform to school they are required to have school logo only garments on. This includes tracksuit pants, students can choose to wear shorts or tracksuit pants however they must be school logo garments. There are three styles of shorts and two styles of tracksuit pants available for purchase at the uniform shop which caters for all needs.
In 2022 we transitioned to the new college logo track suit pants for Year 7 & 8 students. Please note that students now in Year 9 for PE may wear shorts or tracksuit pants, however if they choose to wear tracksuit pants they are required to wear the college navy logo track pants as this was a requirement last year when they were in Year 8.
We have a new PE uniform item that caters for sunsmart and extra warmth under the rugby top available for students to purchase for $46.95. Also a new winter scarf that will be available for purchase early in term 2.

Junior School Fit4life Presentation - Police in School Cyber safety Presentation
On Tuesday March 28 Brooke Pollock and John Keats presented some simple strategies for the students to use to help keep themselves, friends and family members cyber safe.
In this interactive presentation students shared all the ways they know to safeguard themselves when playing games online or when on social media sites.
- Block unwanted players/comments
- Tell a trusted adult when they have an issue
- Only play/connect with people they know
- Be role models online
- Don’t share or store inappropriate images online
- Online bullying is against the law
The main message for students was outlined using the following acronym the “CYBER” acronym relating to how to stay safe online;
C – Communicate (tell a trusted adult when something isn’t right)
Y – You (It’s your Cyber world, don’t let it control you)
B – Balance (Have balance in your life, sleep, exercise, good nutrition, other hobbies)
E – Education (Keep your Cyber knowledge up to date, see links below)
R – Respect (If you don’t respect others online, you’re really not respecting yourself)
R – Reputation (Your online activity can become what people think of you)
R – Resume’ (Your online activity leaves a digital footprint that can be seen by anyone)
The esafety commission has some very useful and practical information for every age group (adults included!), and we encourage everyone to access this website with their children.
Kids Helpline is another great place for young people to utilise when they want to communicate.
L/S/C John Keats and L/S/C Brooke Pollock, Youth Resource Officers, Warrnambool Police Station: 55601133 or 55601195 are also available should you need any help or advice in regards to cybersafety.
Fit4life Presentations - Term 2

What’s Happening in the Mathematics Faculty?
Energisers – Letters and Numbers
Energisers or ‘Brain Breaks’ can be used within a class to start a lesson or break up the lesson. A common task is taking the Mathematical concept from the TV series ‘Letters and Numbers’. How would you fair?
Using the following numbers and basic mathematical operations:
2 3 6 7 10 50
Can you make the number: 623
Note: The numbers can only be used once and you don’t need to use all of the numbers.
Good Luck!

Student Voice - Ride2School Day
On Friday 24th March there was a casual clothes day for Emmanuel College, but it was also National Ride to School Day!!! It's one day of the year when we all should participate, as it helps save carbon emissions from cars and keeps us healthy. Who knows, you may like it so much you want to do it everyday?
When Emmanuel College students walk or ride to school it is a great way to cut down on our parents or guardians driving. Did you know, for every kilometer that you don't drive in cars, but instead walk you save 223.8 grams of carbon emissions? Just last year on this day, Australian students saved around 28 tonnes of carbon emissions. That's the equivalent work of 195 trees. This was just one DAY!!! Just imagine, if we were doing this every single day, we would save so many emissions. It would be around 32,000 which is the equivalent of 39,000 trees.
So remember, if we keep driving to school, the environment is slowly getting weaker and weaker. By riding or walking, we are saving the environment. Think of your health and the health of the environment, ride, scoot, or skate to school as much as you can safely. Also, remember to wear a helmet whilst riding and follow the laws of the road, and give way to pedestrians on the footpath.
Luke Robson
Year 8 Student Leader
“I walk to school, because it makes me feel healthy and good!” Kai Moloney, Year 8.
"It's really important to walk to school or share rides, because it is really good for the environment. It's a small thing, but if we all do it, it makes a MASSIVE difference to our planet” Milly Graham, Year 12.
“I scooted to school today, because it was a ride to school day. It felt good to help the environment and stop extra pollution from cars” Jett Stuart, Year 7.
Student Voice - Senior House Activites
Rice - Pancake Breakfast
Haley Warburton, Year 12
On Thursday 30th March, Rice house were treated to a morning pancake breakfast cooked and prepared by the Year 10 - 12 Rice house leaders.
It was a great way for the house students to come together in an informal setting and listen to some music, feast on some delicious pancakes and bond as a house strengthening our house unity. Thanks to all who helped on the day. GO RICE!
Maguire - Dodgeball in the Emmanuel Centre
Charlie Groves, Year 12
On Thursday 30th March, the senior school (Year 10, 11, and 12’s) participated in a Maguire house dodgeball competition.
The Year 10 and 11 versed first with the Year 11 taking the win!
The final was the year 11’s and 12’s. It was a very competitive final but the year 11’s took out the overall win!!
Egan - Easter Egg Hunt
Tom Lane, Year 12
On Thursday during extended homeroom, the senior Egan students participated in a chocolate egg hunt to get into the Easter spirit. This event was prepared by year 10,11,12 Egan leaders and was intended to be run on the grass area outfront the office.
However, due to the weather there was a last minute change in plan in the morning. We decided to move the egg hunt to the D corridor, which is home to the 6 Egan mentor groups. Students were temporarily moved down to the cafeteria whilst the eggs were hidden. Then the hunt for a few hundred eggs began!
It is fair to say everyone had a good time and the spirit of the reigning house champions was stronger than ever. GO THE MIGHTY EGAN!
McAuley - Kahoot in The STAGE
Emily Mahoney, Year 12
This Thursday the McAuley senior school students came to the warm Stage to participate in a Kahoot, after some technical difficulties we eventually got underway with players guessing the achievements of fellow peers and some teachers' baby photos. Easter eggs were thrown to successful participants, with the winner Ned Ewing winning and taking away a block of chocolate.
Student Leadership Update
Year 7 Leaders Announced
On Thursday 30th March, the Year 7 homeroom leaders for 2023 were announced via a video presentation in their homerooms.
There was an extensive process in the election of leaders, with 85 students nominating that they wished to be a part of the process.
Those who opted to be a part of the leadership process were then put up for voting by their homeroom.
All students who have been elected will now represent the Year 7 cohort for the year and work with the Year 8 leaders to help implement programs at the Goold campus in 2023. They will have a more formal badge assembly at the start of Term 2.
Year 8 Student Leaders - Social Innovators
On Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th of March the year 8 leaders were involved in the Social Innovators program in the new Pavilion at the Reid Oval. The Emmanuel leaders and other young people from schools across Warrnambool were provided with opportunities to invent services, programs and products that they bring back and implement in our community. The program was designed for young people to discover new insights around issues they care about, generate crazy good ideas, prototype how these ideas can work in the community, and develop compelling pitches that are presented to community and business leaders at the conclusion of day 2.
On day 1 students came up with creative and innovative ideas such as introducing healthy foods such as smoothies to school, tree planting initiatives, new apps to promote mental health, getting young people into more part-time work, and creating spaces in the school where students can go for brain breaks and relaxing. On day 2 the students condensed their big crazy ideas into achievable programs that they could implement in the community. They then had to create a speech to pitch to investors from Saputo, Southwest sport, Brophy, the department of environment land water, and planning. All the leaders did a great job pitching their ideas and represented the Emmanuel Community exceptionally well. They should be very proud of their effort at the 2-day program.

Emmanuel College has both a student and a parent/guardian Book Club. Each of these meet a couple of times in a school Term. The student book club meets at lunchtimes in the Reading Room of the Library where books being read may be discussed or special activities held. The parent/guardian book club meets twice a Term in the evenings.
If any students or parents/guardians are interested in joining the book club, please email Mrs Sinnott - msinnott@emmanuel.vic.edu.au
Emmanuel Reads
On Thursday 23 March everyone at Emmanuel College (both staff and students) took part in Emmanuel Reads. This was a time to read in Extended Home Room/Mentor Room at the start of the day. Leading up to the day students and staff were encouraged to find a book or borrow one from the Library, ready to read. It was fabulous to see the interactions and conversations about what was going to be read on the day. Many classes booked in to the Library and borrowed a book or magazine. There were also tubs of books around the school if anyone required a book. Mr Morgan made an announcement over the PA to start the reading session and then concluded the session just before Period 1.
I would like to thank all the staff and students who participated in the Emmanuel Reads event. The feedback we have received has been very positive. We may look to doing a similar event later in the year.
Thanks to Ms C Ryan, Head of English Faculty for her assistance with organising Emmanuel Reads. Our Emmanuel Reads event was part of a bigger program of reading events that took place in March for Australia Reads.

Arts Update
Making & Exhibiting Melbourne Excursion
Wednesday 29th March the Year 11 & 12 Photography classes (ART – Making and Exhibiting) travelled to Melbourne for a day of exhibitions, talks and photo shoots. Beginning together the two classes were able to view the Top Arts 2023 Exhibition and go through Folios from the exhibiting students. Having the opportunity to see the creative process behind the artworks is an incredibly important aspect of all CREATIVE VCE classes. The realisation of how much work VCE asks of you as a creative is an important one to have in Term 1 and will set our students up for a great 2023.
At this point, the two classes separated with Year 11’s having an educator led tour of the NGVA- Fed Square exhibition Melbourne Now before completing an Urban Spaces Photoshoot and finishing their day with an afternoon viewing artworks in NGV St Kilda Road. Year 12’s also viewed Melbourne Now and then headed off to the RONE exhibition at Flinders Street Station, visited NGVI and then finished with a talk and exhibition viewing at Buxton Contemporary.
A massive day FULL of art and experiences of all types. Heaps to bring into the students own work in the coming months.
Art Club
Every week om Wednesdays and Thursdays we open J5 at lunch time for students to come along and create. Students can drop in occasionally or regularly and spend time creating art. Lunch is eaten, music sung along to and many wonderful creations happening. Students use recycled canvas’s, skateboard decks, a range of art papers and also acetate to create on and are free to use whatever art materials they need that are out in the room. It has been amazing to see who turns up and what is being produced.
9@RICE has also begun this program on Monday lunchtimes in O2.
