Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
Feast of Christ the King
Presently, we are surrounded by reminders the end of the year is near. Last Sunday’s mass was the Feast of Christ the King, the culmination of the liturgical year and next weekend begins the season of Advent, with four Sundays preparing us for Christmas. I read this week about the popularity of the latest season of “The Crown” on Netflix, and while I haven’t seen it, I imagine it’s a world away from the Feast of Christ the King! “When we reflect on the kingship of Jesus it is patently clear that Jesus’ exploits and powers are of another kind. His battles were against sin, suffering, and death. His victory was dearly won and his enthronement took place on a rocky outcrop called Calvary, surrounded by misunderstanding, ridicule and rejection … testimony to a kingship based on service and self-giving love.” (Christopher Monaghan CP).
2023 Leaders
This week the 2023 Emmanuel College Captains and Student Leadership Team will be invested at our whole school assembly on Thursday. Student leaders at Emmanuel are encouraged to see their leadership as a call to service; it is never about the badge or popularity. Student leadership is an opportunity to serve and to assist our community to grow. I wish all of the 2023 student leaders’ success. If you are attending the assembly, please be seated by 9am.
Emmanuel Day Fundraising
One great example of this year’s student leaders service was the Emmanuel Day activities and fundraising for Mercy Works and the Ruben Centre. Together the students raised $3,976 to be shared equally with these two not-for-profit organisations whose origins are the same as our school, that is, the Sisters of Mercy and the Christian Brothers, whose charitable work continues in places where government agencies and support do not reach. Congratulations to all the students who took part wholeheartedly in Emmanuel Day.
Year 12 Graduation
The Year 12 Graduation was a highlight of last week especially being able to gather with our graduands, staff members and as many family and friends as desired. Being prevented from holding graduation to the full extent the last two years contributed to the extraordinary celebratory atmosphere. During the graduation I shared the following words:
Year 12s, today you completed a journey like thousands of young people in the State of Victoria, and you have graduated from Emmanuel College like generations of young people before you. You have earned the title Alumni of this College joining all those who have attended this school for 150 years since 1872. On behalf of Emmanuel College, I say congratulations. Congratulations for not just crossing the finish line, but completing the race under conditions that previous generations of graduates did not experience. The pandemic years have enhanced your endurance and made you extremely resilient, qualities that equip you for life beyond the walls of your now familiar high school. May you use the qualities of resilience and endurance well, along with all the values and qualities your Emmanuel education has taught you.
A few short weeks ago we celebrated your Valedictory Day with you. At your Valedictory I acknowledged your year level for selecting the variety of positive quotes and messages we see around our school. A gift from your generation to future generations of Emmanuel students. I wish to share with you a message or quote from my childhood, one that remains timeless, and one you may care to remember as you begin your journey beyond the familiar and the safe environment of Emmanuel College.
My grandfather shared this quote with me when I was young. Like many grandparents he had a positive influence on my young life. He was both a gentleman, and a gentle man. He taught me the importance of hard work and the values of honesty and patience. He married and raised his family during the Great Depression and he served his country during the second world war in Papua New Guinea.
When he and I did things together that didn’t quite work the first time, he would say:
Good. Better. Best. Never let it rest, until your good is better, and your better, best.
It was his way of saying let’s try that again and see if we can do it better this time. In Australia the quote was popularised by John Furphy, whose family ran a foundry in Shepparton where they produced the Furphy water cart used by the Australian army to supply water to its front-line troops during war time. Every Furphy water cart bore the message: Good. Better. Best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better, and your better, best. I don’t know if my grandfather learnt the quote during his war years. But it is well known that Aussie soldiers gathered around those Furphy water carts sharing their stories while they quenched their thirst. And like the quotes you selected for our school, the Furphy quote is intended to be a motivating statement. It reminds us that none of us is perfect, that we achieve through persistence and perseverance and even then, there will be room for improvement.
Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy who established this school 150 years ago, believed the same. She said to the young women who joined her mission to bring education and health care to the poor and underprivileged, the best advice she could offer them as they undertook their work, was to be good today and better tomorrow.
Both ideas are helpful as we wait for the results of exams and the arrival of ATAR scores. No matter the outcome, the results will be but one reflection of who you are, as each of you has an abundant capacity for future growth. Having graduated from Emmanuel College today, your education is far from finished.
Year 12, you are about to take a more active role in the world than ever before. As you make your way in life shine the light of your education into dark corners, help to expose the things that are unfair, work together to find solutions, and speak for those who do not have a voice. We can proudly say Emmanuel graduates and alumni around the globe are already doing this. Now it is your turn!
Our world is far from being a place that nurtures and provides for all people equally. As the recipients of a Mercy education, it is now your turn to make a difference. I encourage you through whatever careers and roles you undertake, not to stop at good, but to strive to do better and to be your best. And for those of you with leadership capabilities, as you strive for your best, may you be an inspiration to others to be good today and better tomorrow.
May the flame of your spirit burn brightly. May you be a light within your community. And may God’s mercy shine upon you. Thank you. Farewell, and good luck.
Early Start Program for Year 11 into Year 12
This week the Year 11 students transition to Year 12 and begin their early start program and the commencement of year 12 study. We wish them well. In the following week I am looking forward to the 9@RICE Passion Project Presentations on Tuesday 29 November from 4pm in the Rice Campus Hall. It is the culmination of their 9@RICE study and each person’s project is a reflection of an area of personal interest or passion. I understand there’s a huge variation in the projects being developed.
Government Funding to Catholic Schools
Finally, with the State election only days away it may be helpful to know both major political parties have promised future support for Catholic schools. The Labor Party has promised $717 million, while $700 million in capital funding is promised by the Victorian Liberals and Nationals. Both packages enable new facilities and schools to be constructed and upgrades to existing buildings to meet changing educational needs. It is strong recognition of the vital part Catholic education plays in the State of Victoria. Please view the following letter from the Catholic Education Commission for the full announcement.
Our mission of Mercy
I wish you well this week. May the spirit of Mercy be with you and in all that you do.
Our world yearns for compassionate hearts and generous spirits to craft
countless works of mercy in response to the cries of creation.
Together, we share in this mission of mercy.
Like Mary, Mother of Mercy, may we take the time to ponder
what is happening around us, to dream of what is possible
and to respond mercifully, with love and respect for all we meet
along the roads we travel.
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.
Kind regards,
Peter Morgan,
Principal
A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
Student Voice
As part of the new child safety standards we continue to empower our young people at Emmanuel College to participate in decision making. One such way we do this is through student voice. Our students' voice committee this year has made decisions around uniform, computer access and furniture for the cafe space.
We congratulate the following students who will form the student voice committee in 2023.
We look forward to this group of students providing a platform for discussing student matters and ideas within our college.

Baytr Mental Health Presentation
Year 9 and year 10 students recently had a mental presentation, with the main focus being for improved mental health outcomes for young people and communities.
After taking part in the Batyr program students reported:
-86% were engaged or highly engaged
-89% said they found the mental health stories shared by Batyr were powerful
On mental health literacy and help-seeking we heard:
-79% said they would be able to support a friend going through mental ill health
-59% said they'd reach out to professional services if they were experiencing mental ill health -54% said they reach out to a close friend or relative if they were experiencing mental ill health
Here are some of the insights the young people shared after the program on what they learnt or will take away from the program:
"That people's experiences of mental health are all different and that it's okay to not be okay."
"Always know that if someone tells you something you don't have to fix it for them, just be there for them."
Year 7 Assembly
It was wonderful to see our Year 7 students gathering in the quadrangle area in the Goold centre last Wednesday morning for a short assembly to present merits badges. May year 7 students have received Red and Blue merit awards. There has also been a significant number of students reaching Gold merit award level. We congratulate all students who have achieved merit levels this year.
Library News
Sustainable School Shop
Emmanuel College has paid a subscription to the Sustainable School Shop which means that you can trade College booklist items and uniforms. The new service is very accessible, it preferences our school first and then provides access to buy and sell items with families attending other schools. Many schools use this service. Access to second-hand textbooks, uniforms, calculators, stationery, musical equipment, etc is available all year.
Emmanuel College booklists have been uploaded to the site to so that you know the items you are looking to purchase are the exact matching ones for the booklist. You are able to check the editions of the textbooks to make sure that they match. Please see the flyer for further details.
A Visit To The Warrnambool Library and Learning Centre
Ms Foard’s Year 7 English Class (7C) visited the new Warrnambool Library this month to tour the spaces and learn about the many programs including Homework program, Tech Club and others. The class was able to view all of the Library to see where there are spaces to study, to relax, to read, to meet with others. Students from the class who had completed a membership form prior to the visit (with parents giving permission) were able to receive their own Library card and were able to borrow resources. Students still wishing to join as a member of the Library can contact the Library for a form to complete.
The Library is four times the size of the previous Library. It is situated on the TAFE site at 8 Kepler Street and features views to the ocean (accessible by stairs or lift), a café (opening soon), quiet areas to sit and a specific children’s area.
The Library is a $20.25 million partnership between the Victorian Government, the Warrnambool City Council and South West TAFE.
For more information about the Library opening hours and what it offers, please visit:
https://library.warrnambool.vic.gov.au/
A great excursion for Ms Foard to organise for her class, to show a new learning space available for all in Warrnambool.
Farewell To The Toyo High School Students
Last week we said farewell to the Toyo High School students who spent each Wednesday in the Library working with Simone, their Coordinator. We enjoyed having them visit and liked getting to know them.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Second-hand Uniform and Textbook Trading
The college is conscious of the need to provide an efficient process for families to be able to buy and sell their second-hand textbooks, uniforms and other student resources.
I am delighted to inform you of the school’s new initiative to provide parents with the ability to trade these second-hand items via the Sustainable School Shop website. www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au
Results from other schools have been excellent - families have enjoyed a very comprehensive and convenient method of buying and selling second-hand items. The new service is very accessible, it preferences our school first and then provides access to buy and sell items with families attending other schools. Many schools use this service. Access to second-hand textbooks, uniforms, calculators, stationery, musical equipment, etc is available all year.
For the best results:
- Register on the Sustainable School Shop website and nominate the school
- A subscription to the service will be provided to you
- List your items for sale
- List wanted ads for those items you are looking to buy
- The school’s uniform and book lists are loaded into the system to make listing ads easy
- The system matches the ads of buyers with sellers and notifies the buyer via email
- Buyers contact sellers and arrange where and when to trade
- Most trading will occur with other parents from our school
- Parents are well supported via Sustainable School Shop’s telephone (0438 743 444) and email help lines
- The system is simple and easy to use - If you don’t have a computer, internet access or an email address, please call the Sustainable School Shop for assistance
- You can pre-arrange the transaction and then trade after the texts are not required.
The college is providing this service so there is no cost for families. Each family that registers on the Sustainable School Shop will be given a subscription. We are very excited about this new initiative and we hope you will make the most of this opportunity and gain the benefit from recycling your children’s school items, while at the same time helping another family within our school community.
There has been a new feature placed on the Sustainable School site. Sustainable School Shop has a new feature called the Second-hand Textbook Stocktake, it’s a summary of second-hand texts that are for sale on our website in relation to each book on the school’s booklist for all year levels (updated once daily). The URL below is to our school’s second-hand textbook stocktake summary. Japanese Exchange Students
The Japanese Exchange students’ time at Emmanuel College has come to an end and below are some of their reflections on their time in Warrnambool and at Emmanuel. A big thank you to Simone Carroll di Cesare from AIIU for coordinating the exchange, to the library staff at the College for their daily help and the staff at Emmanuel, especially the teachers who have welcomed the students in their classrooms.
Julia Smith,
Languages
Jason, Kelly, Nathaniel, and Roisin Hansford were my host family. I love to play UNO with my host mother and host father. They took me to beautiful places on the weekends. My favourite class was Japanese and food studies! The teachers are so kind and made great friends. We went shopping, had picnics and went to the beach.
I had a great time with my host family, my friends and teachers from Emmanuel College! Thank you so much. I will definitely come back to Warrnambool.
Mirai Fujita.
I stayed with the Prendergast and the Mills family. I liked to see the ocean and it was good for me. Swimming in the ocean is fun.
Eating Australian food was good. I liked Tim Tams the best. It was really delicious. I also liked cheese balls and hedgehog. They were delicious as well.
Meeting new people was a really good experience for me and it was fun. Talking English was difficult for me but I have had a really good time.
Soshi Kubota.
I had a wonderful host family, friends and teachers for 10 weeks. I had a lot of anxiety, but more than that, I had a lot of fun and the 10 weeks went by very quickly. I was happy to be able to work not only with the Year 11 students, but also with the Year 12 students, Year 10 students, Year 8 students and Year 7 students. I was especially involved with the Year 11 students in the Japanese class and I learned a lot from them. It was fun to experience classes that do not exist in Japan.
I am so glad that I was able to experience so many things and study abroad. I am grateful for all the help I received from the staff in the library at the school. Thank you very much for all you did for me. I also found a new goal, so I will go back to Japan and do my very best again.
Thank you all very much for the wonderful time and experience.
Mitsuki Nagai.
I stayed with the Mueglitz family for the first 3 weeks and the Ferguson family for the rest of the time. I am very happy that I was able to experience Australian life in the form of a homestay, and I would like to thank everyone who accepted me. In my school life, I was able to experience a class that was completely different from Japan. In classes where students actively participate, there were times when I was puzzled by the differences from Japan, but everything was exciting and it was a wonderful experience. Especially in the Japanese class, there were a lot of fun activities. When I taught simple Japanese and practiced conversations, I felt like I was able to see Japanese objectively and felt fresh.
English was still difficult and there were many times when I had trouble with the language difference, but the teachers and students helped me each time. I really enjoyed playing with my friends and talking about each other at school and on the holidays. Everything was a very valuable experience. Thank you very much for your hard work and allowing me to learn so much.
Hanna Toyama.
My host family were Luke, Kerrie, Harry, Ella and Angus Griffiths and I stayed with them for 10 weeks. I loved Australian food, nature, school, the people and everything in Australia. We watched movies and cooked dinner together with my host family and this was a happy time for me. I was allowed to choose some of my classes at school and what I wanted to do in class. That was fun for me, and it helped me to talk with my new friends. The students were all very friendly and the teachers were very kind to me. I had a good experience here in Australia and would like to thank everyone who helped me, especially Simone, Julia and the library staff.
Shioni Omi.
I have experienced many different things since I came to Australia. I am very happy to have met so many people and to have made so many new friends. With the support of many teachers and friends at the school, I was able to complete my assignments successfully. I am happy that I was able to take pictures of Warrnambool that I took at the studio art class. I also went to Lyndo’s boxing gym to train and stay fit during my time in Australia. Thank you to all the staff, especially Simone, Julia, So and the library staff for everything that helped us with. I will be back in Warrnambool in a few years.
Keisho Watanabe.

Sports Report
State Basketball
The College was represented on Monday the 14th and Tuesday the 15th of November in the State Basketball finals held at MSAC in Melbourne. The Monday group consisted of our Year 7 Boys team who had a narrow loss against Berwick SC 35-30 to start the day and bounced back to win convincingly against Montmorency and Lavalla College to finish the day. The team missed out on making the final by percentage, finishing 3rd overall. Congratulations to the boys and well done on your successful progression through to the finals.
On Tuesday the 15th we had three of our Girls teams compete for State titles. On a busy day our Year 7 Girls, Year 8 Girls and Intermediate (9/10’s) Girls teams took to the court showing their skills against the best school teams in the State.
The Year 7 Girls also had a great day winning all their pool games and making the final against Rowville College. In another close game, the girls went down by 4 points to narrowly miss the State title. Congratulations to all the girls on your efforts
The Year 8 Girls won two of their three pool games and missed the final narrowly on percentage also. It was a terrific effort for the team to progress through to this stage, well done to all players. The Intermediate Girls team had a great day making the final against the highly ranked Box Hill College. In a close tussle, the girls played a great game to go down by 10 points. Congratulations to all players.
Thanks to staff involved with coaching and managing the teams including Fiona McCosh with the Year 7 boys, Kate Foster with the Year 8 Girls, Colleen Pope and Kate Foster with the Intermediate Girls and Shane Smith with the Year 7 Girls and overseeing the other teams throughout the two days.
Surf League
On Wednesday the 16th of November the College was represented by 34 students at the State Surf League. All competitors competed fairly and were determined to do well in a range of events (Swimming, Board, Cameron and Wade relays, and Beach events). The cooler conditions didn’t deter the enthusiasm and spirit of athletes in the ocean at Cosy Corner, Torquay. The Westerly was protected by the cliffs and off-shore wind made conditions ideal. Overall we were 2nd overall in the Surf League Competition this year. The Male competitors were 2nd and the Females 3rd respectively.
Thanks to Chris Hoffman for being chief marshall, Jaffa for driving the new bus, Sophie Thomas and Will McNeil for their advice and expertise. The WSLSC also were supportive by providing the club ute and trailer.
Region Cricket
On Tuesday November 8th our Year 7 and 8 Boys teams took part in the Region Cricket Finals held in Warrnambool.
The Year 7 boys competed against Trinity College Colac and Mercy Regional College at the Mack Oval. In the first game of the day the Year 7 boys went down to Trinity College who displayed some terrific bowling and fielding. In the end Trinity chased our score of 45 with five overs to spare. In the second game of the day, our team restricted Mercy to 38. We managed to chase this total with two overs to spare. Well done to all the boys on your performance throughout the day.
The Year 8 Boys progressed to a final against Mercy in their games held at Brierly. Batting first in a reduced overs game our teams posted 48. Unfortunately this was not quite enough to get a win, with Mercy chasing the total with one over to spare. Well done to all the players and thanks to Tim Cain for coaching the side

Salt Creek Scholarships
The 2023 Salt Creek Scholarship are now open for application to all 2022 school leavers residing in Victoria's Western District. Applications close at 5pm on Sunday, 1st January, 2023.
Each year we offer a Scholarship worth $30K, to assist country kids with their tertiary residential fees.
As stated on our website - "In recognition of the importance of tertiary education together with the associated costs, the Salt Creek Wind Farm has established an annual scholarship of $30K for the benefit of a deserving local applicant. The primary objective of the scholarship is to provide the opportunity to potential scholars who might not otherwise be able to manage a tertiary education as a result of the associated costs they face due to living away from home and supporting themselves close to their chosen place of study. Selection is based on personal qualities and demonstrated leadership as well as academic ability."
Peter Coy, proprietor of 'Salt Creek' in Woorndoo, established the Scholarship in 2018 and, upon discussing it with Tilt Renewables who built the wind farm, Tilt decided to match it dollar for dollar, guaranteed for 25 years, bringing the total amount offered annually to $30K.
You can read more about our 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 Scholars, and find a lot more information about the Scholarship on their website - www.saltcreekscholarship.com.au
