Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
Welcome to Term Four! Those of you familiar with schools will know the pace and the pulse of term four is especially rapid and includes the culmination of the various cycles that are part of school life.
Good Luck and Farewell to Year 12.
The first of those concluding cycles is Year 12 with the final formal classes occurring this Friday followed by Year 12 Valedictory Day celebrations next Monday. We wish the class of 2022 a happy, memorable and safe conclusion to their secondary journey as they depart and prepare for the final VCAA examinations and/or transition to employment pathways. The senior years of the current Year 12 cohort were particularly impacted by the pandemic, and they deserve our special recognition for arriving at this point in such good spirits. As I do each year, I sent a letter to the Year 12 students as term three was ending in which I encouraged them to maintain their interest and their energy for these remaining challenging weeks. In my letter I said to the students:
Together, students and their families along with the Emmanuel staff, we have been through a lot in your time at Emmanuel, especially the last few years. I am extremely proud of you all, your positive outlook, and the way you get in and make things happen, like the Winter Ball held for the first time this year. At the end of Emmanuel Day last Friday one of your Year 12 peers sent me an email message saying how much she enjoyed Emmanuel Day. She said, “Emmanuel Day brings such good memories and times that will be cherished forever!” I hope that is the story of your Year 12 experience at Emmanuel College this year; a story of new bonds and friendships that you will cherish throughout life, the story of self-discovery, of knowing who you are and what you stand for. What is most exciting is that this is just the beginning!
I encourage you to share your message of support and encouragement with anyone you know who is concluding their Year 12 studies in the coming days. It’s challenging to maintain a focused approach until the final exam, and your message of support may just be the one that makes a difference.
Emmanuel Day - the fun in fundraising.
As referenced above, the College celebrated Emmanuel Day on the last day of term three. The weather conditions were appalling but the participation and enjoyment was the most positive I’ve seen in years. Mrs Claire Wrigley is to be congratulated for her overall coordination of the event and the efforts made to revamp several aspects of the day. I also acknowledge the contribution of the staff and many students who participated in the planning of the day. While there were changes in the format, the fundamentals remained the same, starting with a liturgy in the morning, fundraising for Mercy Works and the Ruben Centre and concluding with “Emmanuel’s Got Talent”. There was so much talent on display and a thunderous response from students supporting their peers for having the courage to step up and entertain us. This year we asked students to purchase a wrist band as part of their commitment to the day and our shared efforts to fund raise for the two main charities we support throughout the year. An amazing amount of money (still being tallied and finalised) was raised and shared with Mercy Works and the Ruben Centre. Congratulations Emmanuel!
Words for Wellbeing.
“Words for Wellbeing” is an exceptionally good resource prepared by the school’s Fit4Life team with the content reflecting the work they are doing with students and the trends and issues they see presenting. The Fit4Life team released the third 2023 edition of Words for Wellbeing at the end of last term with access available at this link: https://emmanuelcw.schoolzineplus.com/enews?nid=68
Sun Smart Shade Sails.
Towards the end of last term, the installation of new shade sails was completed in the junior school area. The College was the recipient of a state government grant covering the cost of the new shade sails supplied by local Warrnambool providers. The sails have added to the efforts to create a distinct junior school environment for students adjacent to our senior school campus. The order has been placed for a ‘ninja’ style climbing and obstacle course to be installed in the Goold Centre grounds. We were unsuccessful securing any external funds for this project and we will again rely on the proceeds from our College Fee Raffle which starts soon. I thank all our families who have supported the fee raffle in the past and ask you to please continue your support. Installation of the activity equipment will be undertaken during January and I am hopeful it will be ready for the return of students in 2023.
Strategic Planning for the future.
During the last week the College Management Team spent a day continuing our strategic planning process which will culminate in a new five-year strategic plan being in place early in 2023. With the relocation of year levels around the campuses, the introduction of the 9@RICE program and the implementation of a vertical pastoral structure in the senior school along with the capital works to support each of these developments, the last strategic plan has reached its conclusion. In tandem with the College Masterplan which drives the ongoing development of buildings and facilities, the next Strategic Plan will guide the learning and operational directions of the college. The college staff, students and the College Advisory Council have contributed to the process to date. Having a strong masterplan and strategic plan ensures the college has an ongoing focus on growth and continuous incremental improvement.
Following our strategic planning time last week, the College Management Team attended the annual Mercy dinner, conference and mass. The following prayer is taken from the conference mass’ prayers of the faithful:
We pray for all those, living and dead, who founded our Mercy tradition and worked tirelessly to fulfil the vision of creating a community where universal charity reigns,
and mercy is capable of surmounting all difficulties.
May we draw on their legacy for inspiration as we enter a future that is unknown.
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.
I wish you well this week. May the spirit of Mercy be with you and in all that you do.

Principal

Uniform: ‘Our school uniform, our school pride’
Students returned to school looking great in their summer uniform. Students are required to wear their blazer to and from school regardless of if they walk, ride, bus or travel in a car to school every day. Please ensure your child has their blazer with them, parents of Year 11 students please note students need a blazer in Year 12 and we ask that this is not sold at the end of this year.
Term 4 means hats are back on. We have a school hat that is both durable and sunsmart. Students are expected to have a college hat on when outside for PE class, recess and lunchtime. Hats can be purchased from the uniform shop for $17.95.

Library News
International School Library Month
Emmanuel College is participating in International School Library Month by making some bookmarks to send to a school overseas. The visiting Japanese students started making the bookmarks today. Students can ask in the Library to participate. We have a box of card and images for students to use to make their own bookmarks.
Dyslexic Awareness Month
October is set aside as Dyslexic Awareness Month. While dyslexia can make reading more difficult, with the right instruction, almost all individuals with dyslexia can learn to read. Many people with dyslexia have gone on to accomplish great things. Among the many dyslexia success stories are Thomas Edison, Stephen Spielberg, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Charles Schwab.
Emmanuel College Library has many resources available to help students with reading. We have books that are written in dyslexic friendly font and our digital reading platforms can be altered to have the ebook presented with the dyslexic friendly font. Please ask the Library staff or your English teacher if you would like to have a look at these books or use the digital reading platforms such as Sora, Wheelers and Bolinda. Many people find reading books with dyslexic friendly font a great way of making reading easier.
For a full list of the dyslexic friendly font books we have, visit or log in to the Library home page and look at the top for Quick Lists:

Hosting a Language Exchange Teacher
In 2023 we will welcome a Japanese Assistant, Mayu, from our Sister City, Miura, Japan. She will be assisting in Japanese classes for one year. We are looking for host families for Terms 1, 2, 3 and 4. Host families are required to provide three meals a day but unlike hosting a student, Mayu will do her own laundry and help around the home etc… She has excellent English skills and hosting her would be of considerable benefit for families that have a child studying Japanese in particular. A weekly stipend is paid to families to help cover expenses. If you are interested or would like more information, please email jsmith@emmanuel.vic.edu.au

Regional Athletics
On Thursday the 6th of October, 54 students represented the college at Region Athletics. On a cold and blustery day we saw many terrific performances including 3 relay team victories in the under 13 and 14 girls and the 14 year old boys. Results from the day can be found on the link below.
Goodluck to the 20 students who will now represent the school next Monday at the State Athletics meet next Monday the 17th of October.

Taste the World
In Taste the World, we have been learning about ingredients indigenous to Australia and how these can be incorporated into dishes to create a fusion of flavours. Students have enjoyed designing and producing a wide range of dishes such as barramundi with salt bush chips, Davidson plum chocolate brownie, lemon myrtle cheese cake, sweet potato and wattle seed damper to name a few.

Warrnambool Youth Circle
We are looking for young people aged 12-25 to join our Youth Circle in 2023. The Youth Circle provides young people in Warrnambool the opportunity to share their concerns and ideas around issues that matter to them. It replaces the Warrnambool Youth Council, and is aimed at enabling young people to have a voice while accommodating their busy lives.
We will meet approximately once every two months to workshop a key priority area identified by the group (e.g. mental health, the environment). They will hear from a guest speaker and learn new skills to help put their ideas into action. The first Warrnambool Youth Circle meeting will be held at Archie Graham Centre on Saturday October 15 from 10am until 1pm.
Youth Circle seeks to represent the voices of Warrnambool’s diverse youth community. We encourage young people (aged 12-25) from all backgrounds (culturally diverse, LGBTQIA+, indigenous people, people with a disability) to join the circle. New members can join at any time but need to register online at https://www.warrnambool.vic.gov.au/warrnambool-youth-circle.
