Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
Last Friday saw the celebration of another wonderful event as part of the College’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The inaugural ‘Generations Breakfast’ recognised that many current day Emmanuel families have connections to our school spanning its 150 year history. Those attending the breakfast received a badge denoting their generational connection to the College with some being the first generation to attend the school, through to fifth generation family members who attended one of Emmanuel’s predecessor schools. The common thread being our membership today of the Emmanuel Family. The success of the Generations Breakfast encourages us to make it a biennial event that include all Year seven and eight students and their families in the future.
Condolences
The College community received the very sad news last week of the sudden death of Mrs Mary Mugavin-Brown, wife of recently retired staff member Brian Brown. The College extends its deep sorrow and condolences to Brian and his children Jonathan, Mathew, Timothy, Gabrielle, their partners and children. Brian was an Emmanuel College Deputy Principal for 10 years and a most committed and generous member of our staff. We extend to Brian and his family our message of support expressed through our Faith, Hope and Love.
Eternal rest grant unto Mary, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, Rest in Peace. Amen.
Thank You
Thank you to the staff for their generosity in running two successful and well attended events in the last week. Thank you to Heads of English Catherin Ryan, and Library, Margaret Sinnott, and the Year eight English staff, for a hugely successful presentation of the Year eight picture books and presentation of awards to students. And thank you to our Wellbeing Team, in particular Dr Jodie Fleming, who spoke about anxiety to a packed audience and provided an insight and practical ideas that help us to work together to address this growing area of mental health among adolescents.
Congratulations
It is encouraging to see Emmanuel students are again taking their place in all manner of competitions at local, regional, state and national levels. Congratulations to Ava Wolff in Year 10 who recently won first prize in the National Mercy Foundation Youth Awards Competition. The Mercy Foundation Youth Awards competition encourages high school students to learn more about social justice issues in Australia. This year’s topic was Caring for our Earth. Ava responded to the topic by creating the art work below and Ava’s brief accompanying her entry read: When I think about climate change, actions we could take include planting trees, looking after gardens and our native environment, creating green spaces, focusing on pollutants in the atmosphere. My greatest concern, and a strong focus of my painting, is pollution of the air, land and water. My painting shows a dark creature as a destructive force, pushing against the natural environment in the form of Mother Nature. I’ve tried to capture the struggle of the creature trying to overtake nature which shows how pollution can directly contaminate the surface and leave its mark infecting our land. But Mother Nature is always fighting back, giving hope.
Congratulations to Year 9 student James Wood, who achieved the highest score in the Victorian Clay Target championships held in Echuca last week making James the Victorian Senior School Boys Champion. Congratulations to fellow team member, Year eight student Bridie Mason, who achieved fourth place in the Junior Girls event. What a great outcome for the students who all have several years of competition ahead of them. Thank you to the parents and families who travelled to Echuca with their children making the experience possible.
Meanwhile our Year seven netball team defeated Lavalla Catholic College, Melbourne Girls College, Berwick Secondary College and Catherine McAuley College, Bendigo to take out the School Sport Victoria (SSV) state final, while the senior boys basketball team have proceeded to the state final which is being played in Melbourne today. We wish them continued success.
Congratulations to Scarlett Rae in Year 12 who took part in ‘Connor’s Run’ in Melbourne Sunday to fundraise for the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation. The Foundation is working to tackle paediatric brain tumours and supporting brain research. Scarlett completes the run each year in memory of her cousin Pippa who passed away in 2015. The Emmanuel Family is invited to support Scarlett via this link.
Congratulations to staff members Leah Kermeen and Seb Shiells, both of whom gained recognition last weekend in netball and basketball respectively. Leah was named the netball umpire of the year for both local leagues. The HFNL award is named in honour of her mother Shirley and so a lovely connection and achievement. Seb Shiells won the Hampden league under 18.5 best and fairest with the North Warrnambool Eagles and received the Judd Cup. Congratulations to both Leah and Seb.
Emmanuel Day
We will conclude the week and the term this Friday celebrating Emmanuel Day after an absence of two years. Students are expected to attend the day which commences with a whole school liturgy followed by fun activities, food stalls, talent quest and fund raising for our school’s two charities, Mercy Works and the Ruben Centre. Students are encouraged to ‘dress up’ for our ‘Beach Party’ theme. Please remember the day/term concludes at 2.25pm and term four commences on Monday 3 October.
I wish you well this week. May the spirit of Mercy be with you and in all that you do.
Gracious God, you love and care for all of your children,
Especially the smallest and most vulnerable.
We entrust to you the lives of children and adults at risk
Especially those who have been sexually abused,
And whose trust and innocence has been destroyed.
Help us to hear their cries and to take responsibility for those whose lives have been broken.
Help us to recognise the hurt felt by those wounded by abuse, and the failure to be heard.
We pray that communities and families will find understanding and support,
So that now and in the future, their wounds may be healed and they find lasting peace.
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.

Emmanuel Day - September 16
This week we celebrate Emmnauel Day. The purpose of this day is to come together as a school community to celebrate and have some fun as a school community and to raise awareness and much needed funds for two organisations, Ruben Centre in Nairobi and Mercy Works Projects. These organisations do fantastic work with some of the most vulnerable communities here in Australia and overseas.
In previous years students have paid for activities as they moved around to each activity. This year students will be asked to purchase a wristband for $10 via trybooking allowing access to over 15 activities no more to pay, including a Mobile Zoo, Silent disco, and a chill-out games zone and live music from Flynn Gurry. There will be prizes to be won on the day at some of the activities, and for best dressed students. We will also see the much awaited return of Emmnauel’s Got Talent in the afternoon.
There will be food vans and food stores available with a variety of food options for students to purchase.
We also encourage students to collect an Emmnauel Day passport and by visiting a number of activities and collecting stamps, those who complete the passport will be in the running for a pair of Bose Soundsport Free Wireless headphones – valued at $299.95 - and every entry earns house points towards the house cup for their house.
Please purchase wristbands via trybooking by Wednesday Sept 14.
Homeroom/Mentor group Planning for 2023
The year level teams will shortly begin preparing homerooms and mentor groups for 2023.
The year level team invests a great deal of time and discernment in developing homeroom groups for a new school year.
We are aware that moving into a new school year creates for some students a level of anxiety, however it is important to understand that we are dealing with a number of variables that influence the makeup of homeroom and mentor groups. Such variables include elective choices, students with individual learning plans, teacher observation and feedback and classroom dynamic, and in the senior school the house group a student belongs to. Year 9 students entering senior school are to remain in their house group.
As students transition through the school, we also encourage them to work with other students and become less reliant on being with their friends, and as such build resilience to become independent learners.
In the senior school students will be in a vertical homeroom structure with students from their house group from Year 10 to 12, whilst all academic classes are entirely dependent upon their subject selection. Students currently in Year 9 will not be moved out of their current house for senior school. Generally speaking we do not put siblings into the same mentor group however, if you would like to request siblings to be together, please email the Year 9 coordinator.
If you have any concerns about your child’s 2023 homeroom/mentor group, please communicate with their current Year Level Coordinator in writing by Friday 16 September, via email so we can keep your concerns on record.
This way we can hopefully address these concerns before homeroom/mentor group lists are published, as after publication, changes become very difficult to accommodate. Changes will not be made unless there are extenuating circumstances and a process for review would be followed by senior college leadership. Requests for specific teachers cannot be accommodated in fairness to all students.

R U OK Day
On Thursday September 8 we had a day of action for R U OK Day. Where we remind all in our community that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling with life.
Our senior students along with the College wellbeing team members Megan Collins and Sophie Woolstencroft planned all the activities for the day. Students in Year 7 -9 participated in activities in extended homeroom and senior school students listened to a lived experience from Elke Aulsebrook, sharing her story and a message of seeking help if you need it. Elke spoke about sharing her battles with mental health with family and friends and the importance of asking others for help.
At recess and lunchtime students were able to come together and raise awareness through a photobooth activity!
Uniform Change Over - Summer Uniform
Students will have a week's change over period in week 1 of Term 4 where they may elect to wear summer or winter uniform. All students are required to be in summer uniform by Monday October 10.
Holidays are a good time for haircuts and students are reminded that hair on the shoulder needs to be tied back, including students with mullets. Those with mullets that hair touches the shoulder are to either tie their hair up or have it cut a little so that the length sits off the shoulder.
Please use the holidays to check summer uniforms and if your child requires any more items the uniform shop will be open in the holidays.

Year 9 Faith and Formation Melbourne Experience
On Tuesday 30th August, forty-five year nine students travelled to Melbourne for their Faith and Formation Day. The students attended the Islamic Museum and the Tara Institute (Buddhism) where they gathered information for their immersion week assessments. Students met Sherene Hassan at the Islamic Museum, who shared her experiences of growing up Muslim in Australia. She also took us on a tour of the Museum, which provided us with not only knowledge of the Muslim faith, but about art and architecture here and around the world that people of the Muslim faith have contributed to society.
At the Tara Institute we were greeted by Paul, who was a past student of CBC Warrnambool. He shared with the group an understanding of the teachings of Buddhism, focusing on meditation and how it can help us through bringing us back to what we are grateful for in our lives. The students learnt about how at the Tara Institute they are guided by the Mahayana Buddhist philosophy and guided by Tibetan Buddhists. Paul shared his experience of his journey to his Buddhist faith, from growing up on Timor street, to traveling to India many times, having only just returned recently.
The students are to be congratulated on their participation in the day learning about two religions and their communities that add so much to Australia’s pluralist society.

Hosting a language exchange teacher
In 2023 we will welcome a Japanese Assistant, Mayu, from our Sister City, Miura, Japan. She will be assisting in Japanese classes for one year. We are looking for host families for Terms 1, 2, 3 and 4. Host families are required to provide three meals a day but unlike hosting a student, Mayu will do her own laundry and help around the home etc… She has excellent English skills and hosting her would be of considerable benefit for families that have a child studying Japanese in particular. A weekly stipend is paid to families to help cover expenses. If you are interested or would like more information, please email jsmith@emmanuel.vic.edu.au

Generations Breakfast
We were delighted to welcome our Year 7 families to our inaugural Generations Breakfast last Friday. The significance of our 150-Year milestone, was recognised among generations of past students, along with the newest members of the Emmanuel Family, our Year 7 students.
On arrival, students (past and current) were each presented with a generations badge for their blazers. Each badge identified them by generation of their family that had attended the College. We were pleased to be joined by new families to the College through to families who had as many as four generations receive their education at the College.
Over a tasty breakfast, there was lots of socialising, plus the opportunity to learn a little bit about some of the early students that had direct family links to our current Year sevens today.
Principal Peter Morgan, highlighted to our guests that milestone celebrations such as these present opportunities to respect the traditions of the past and have a sense of pride in being part of Emmanuel College history.

Year 11 Food Studies
Our Year 11 Food Studies class have been fortunate to participate in two excursions this year where they have been able gain an appreciation of the food industry.
Our first excursion back in Term 2 to Melbourne enabled students to learn about the history of the Queen Victoria Market. Students participated in a 90 minute guided tour where they were given the opportunity to taste a diverse range of foods from different cultures. The highlight was gelato from the famous Geloso Gelateria. Following the tour, students travelled by tram into the city to Federation Square where they enjoyed a sit down meal at Big Esso (Mabu Mabu). Big Esso offers a contemporary menu that is seasonally driven and draws on the best of native Australian food. Head Chef Nornie Bero is passionate about using and growing native Australian ingredients, fusing them with contemporary cooking techniques to create a flavoursome and balanced menu. Feedback from the students was positive overall with some commenting that they experienced a flavour explosion.
More recently, students travelled to Saputo Allansford to gain an insight into the day to day operations of a large food manufacturing business. Students were able to visualise the process of cheese production from receiving milk to factory, making cheese and packaging cheese for sale. Throughout the tour, students gained an appreciation of quality assurance practices and the importance of food safety when manufacturing food at a large scale. Following the tour, students enjoyed a cheese tasting and learnt about the process of product development and sensory analysis on a commercial scale.

9@RICE Canberra Immersion Week
Our third and final group of 9@RICE students for 2022 visited Canberra late in Term 3. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families and schools in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributes funding of $45 per student towards these costs, under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program, with the rebate being paid directly to the college upon completion of the excursion.
Term 3’s Canberra camp saw the students visit Parliament House, Old Parliament House (MOAD – Museum of Australian Democracy), The Australian War Memorial, Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon, Canberra Arboretum, The National Museum, The Royal Australian Mint and The Big Issue.

Experiencing Japanese Culture
Year 11 Japanese class recently went on an excursion to experience some Japanese culture and cuisine in the Melbourne CBD. The excursion included experiencing a Japanese style bakery, learning how to properly wear a Yukata (summer style of Kimono) and enjoy an authentic Japanese lunch course meal. We also explored some Japanese stationary shops to make studying a little easier. We enjoyed our excursion and certainly felt like we were in Japan.

Year 8 Picture Book Presentations
On Monday 5th September, Year 8 students and their families gathered in The Stage to be present for the Year 8 Picture Book evening. Ms Ryan (Head of English Faculty) spoke about the Picture Book Unit that Year 8s complete for English, author Andrea Rowe spoke about her life as an author and how she began her career at 3YB Radio Station in Warrnambool. Andrea gave an inspiring talk for both students and families and showed the Children’s Book Council of Australia medal she received for her book Jetty Jumping which won the Early Childhood Category this year. It was special to have Andrea at Emmanuel College for a visit and for her to read and view the Year 8 picture books made by students. We provided a celebratory cake for Andrea for her award winning picture book. Following on from the presentations in The Stage, the audience moved to the College Library to enjoy some snacks and view the picture books in person. We thank the English teachers and the students for creating such insightful picture books suitable for a student to read who is in Foundation, Year 1 or Year 2.

Melbourne Writers Festival Excursion
On Thursday 8th September, 17 students, Jaffa, Rachele Sloane and Mrs Sinnott attended the Melbourne Writers Festival at the Capitol Theatre, Swanston Street, Melbourne.
We sat in the beautifully restored Capitol Theatre and heard about the writing lives of four authors:
Rhiannon Wilde – talking about themes of identity and growing up in her new book Where You Left Us
Vanessa Len – writing about a classic monster story and a hero and turning it inside out in her new novel Only A Monster
Tobias Madden – on being a dancer and theatre worker and growing up in Ballarat and his new book Take A Bow Noah Mitchell
C S Pacat – began writing fan fiction and has now become an internationally best selling author. Her latest book is Dark Rise.
Students were able to ask questions of the authors in the sessions and have their books signed by the authors. At the end of the day we spent some time in the Dymocks book store in Collins Street. The day provided the opportunity to learn how the authors do their writing, what are the influences on their writing and all about getting published.
"I enjoyed the Melbourne Writers Festival 2022, I really enjoyed getting to ask questions from the authors that are really useful for Improving my writing in the future. It was great to meet C.S. Pacat in person and to talk to her about my stories. I would recommend for more people to visit it and would go again." (Sithum)

Year 11 Accounting ATO Competition “Tax, Super + You”
Year 11 Accounting students participated in the Australian Taxation Office creative competition titled “Tax, Super + You”.
The competition brief was “Top four things I need to know about tax and super when I start my first job.” Students were asked to undertake the competition in groups of three.
Students had various options to explore the competition brief; this includes creating short stories, poems, scripts or case studies, artworks, comic strips, songs, animations, videos, skits or music clips.
Unfortunately none of the submissions from Emmanuel College were finalists in the ATO Competition “Tax, Super + You”.
However, a skit/video prepared by Tom Lane, Noah Dawson and Charlie Lynch was voted by a panel of three teachers (Peter Morton- Head of Humanities, Robert Allison - Media teacher and Mr Joseph Alderuccio - Accounting teacher) from Emmanuel College as the best submission, with a prize of $10 each worth of canteen vouchers.
