Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
What a busy week we’ve had at Emmanuel culminating in the College hosting the Frayne Speech Festival and the launch of Common Threads: 150 years of stories from St. Ann’s, CBC and Emmanuel College. More than sixty people gathered in the library giving rise to a celebratory atmosphere to accompany the launch of the 150 year history of the college. Common Threads: 150 years of stories from St. Ann’s, CBC and Emmanuel College is a timeline of photos, stories and quotes and more from the people of our community through the decades. Speaking at the launch I commented that “the launch of a history book presupposes there is a good story to tell, and this school has an amazing story to tell. The history captured within the pages of Common Threads: 150 years of stories from St. Ann’s, CBC and Emmanuel College, is a wonderful story. It’s a story of challenge and triumph over adversity; a story of compassion and community building; a story of teaching and learning in a world of constant and accelerating change. In short, it’s a story of Faith, Hope and Love. It’s actually a myriad of stories from the last 150 years, some better known than others, but together they are our shared story – our common threads. The weaving of those countless threads throughout the last 150 years has gifted generations of families, staff, students and the broader community with a school that is a haven and a home, and as we launch Common Threads: 150 years of stories from St. Ann’s, CBC and Emmanuel College, we say thank you to all who came before us, and wish all those who follow in our footsteps the wisdom and the appreciation to continue this wonderful story.” Copies of this beautifully presented book are available from the College office for $45, or Collins Booksellers, who charge a small commission, in Liebig Street.
Frayne Festival
Following the book launch on Thursday, Friday saw the Frayne Festival being hosted by Emmanuel College and attended by students from eight Victorian Mercy schools, from Mildura to Melbourne. The Frayne Festival is a gathering of students from schools founded in the traditions of Mercy Education. It provides an opportunity for spirited competition in debating, public speaking and voice choir. The festival fosters excellence in speaking and unity across the schools. The festival is named in recognition of Mother Ursula Frayne who opened the first Mercy school in Australia on 2 February 1846. The opening ceremony was held in the Wyton Theatre where I welcomed guests saying to them: “I greet you by saying Ngatanwarr, which is welcome in the language of the Gunditjmara people, the traditional custodians of the country where we gather. Nearby here, where the river meets the coast, there is evidence in the sands of some of the earliest living peoples on the Australian continent. They are the Peek Whurrong people of the Gunditjmara – Maar Nation, and so, in their language, I say again, Ngatanwarr, welcome.” After a two-year pandemic induced hiatus, a very high standard of competition was seen with the following schools and individuals winning their sections.
Voice Choir: 1st - Our Lady of Mercy College Heidelberg, 2nd - Emmanuel College.
Debating: 1st - Academy of Mary Immaculate Fitzroy, 2nd - Mercy Regional College Camperdown.
Public Speaking: 1st - Louise Tamer Emmanuel College, 2nd - Emily Mahoney, Emmanuel College.
Congratulations to all the competitors and a huge thank you to Catherine Ryan, Brigid Foard and Suzanne Dwyer for their committed organisation of the event. Next year’s festival will be hosted by Mount Lilydale Mercy College.
2023 Student Diary
The 2023 Student Diary design competition result was recently announced with congratulations going to Milly Graham whose colourful design was selected for the cover of the 2023 student diary. Well done to Fergus McCoy, Noah Dawson, Lily O’Brien and Georgia Wiese whose designs were among those shortlisted for final selection. Milly’s winning design is featured below.
Finally, we wish students in Year nine and ten all the best for their immersion week experiences and camp this week. I will be travelling to Canberra for the week with the Year nine students and I am looking forward to what we learn. I acknowledge and thank the staff coordinating, running and/or attending these camps and those held recently. The workload is significant, as is the responsibility, and I appreciate the efforts of those staff who make school camps possible.
The feast day of St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop, described as a woman ahead of her time, was recently celebrated on Monday 8 August and I finish with this prayer to St. Mary:
God, through the intercession of Mary MacKillop,
We pray that the fire of your compassion will ignite many hearts.
May Mary’s attentiveness to your dream inspire us.
May her energy to overcome injustice empower us.
May we, like her, make manifest your Presence in our troubled world.
We pray that the beacon of her holiness shine as a blessing forthe universal Church and our world.
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley andEdmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.

A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
Emmanuel Day - September 16
A highlight on our school calendar is Emmnauel Day. The purpose of this day is to come together as a school community to celebrate and have some fun as a school community and to raise awareness and much needed funds for two organisations, Ruben Centre in Nairobi and Mercy Works Projects. These organisations do fantastic work with some of the most vulnerable communities here in Australia and overseas.
In previous years students have paid for activities as they moved around to each activity. This year students will be asked to purchase a wristband for $10 via trybooking allowing access to over 15 activities no more to pay, including a Mobile Zoo, Silent disco, and a chill-out games zone and live music from Flynn Gurry. There will be prizes to be won on the day at some of the activities, and for best dressed students. We will also see the much awaited return of Emmnauel’s Got talent in the afternoon.
There will be food vans and food stores available with a variety of food options for students to purchase.
We also encourage students to collect an Emmnauel Day passport and by visiting a number of activities and collecting stamps, those who complete the passport will be in the running for a pair of Bose Soundsport Free Wireless headphones – valued at $299.95 - and every entry earns house points towards the house cup for their house.
Please purchase wristbands via trybooking link by Tuesday September 13.
Homeroom/Mentor group Planning for 2023
The year level teams will shortly begin preparing homerooms and mentor groups for 2023.
The year level team invests a great deal of time and discernment in developing homeroom groups for a new school year.
We are aware that moving into a new school year creates for some students a level of anxiety, however it is important to understand that we are dealing with a number of variables that influence the makeup of homeroom and mentor groups. Such variables include elective choices, students with individual learning plans, teacher observation and feedback and classroom dynamic, and in the senior school the house group a student belongs to. Year 9 students entering senior school are to remain in their house group.
As students transition through the school, we also encourage them to work with other students and become less reliant on being with their friends, and as such build resilience to become independent learners.
In the senior school students will be in a vertical homeroom structure with students from their house group from Year 10 to 12, whilst all academic classes are entirely dependent upon their subject selection. Students currently in Year 9 will not be moved out of their current house for senior school. Generally speaking we do not put siblings into the same mentor group however, if you would like to request siblings to be together, please email the Year 9 coordinator.
If you have any concerns about your child’s 2023 homeroom/mentor group, please communicate with their current Year Level Coordinator in writing by Friday 16 September, via email so we can keep your concerns on record.
This way we can hopefully address these concerns before homeroom/mentor group lists are published, as after publication, changes become very difficult to accommodate. Changes will not be made unless there are extenuating circumstances and a process for review would be followed by senior college leadership. Requests for specific teachers cannot be accommodated in fairness to all students.

Gold Merit Awards
At our recent whole school assembly 10 students were awarded their Gold Merit award. The Merit Award system recognises a range of endeavours to which our students contribute and encourages positive behaviours that can enable student talents to be celebrated as a community. Once a student has accumulated 200 merit points across 4 different categories with a minimum of two achievements in at least 3 categories they qualify for the Gold Merit award.
Every merit point goes towards the house of the student awarded the merits contributing to the House cup award which is presented to the winning house in December at the awards evening.

Everyday Resilience Presentation
On Thursday August 18 all junior school students participated in a wonderful presentation by Mike Rolls and Ben Pettingill. They both embody an attitude and belief that even the greatest challenges can be tamed with the right mindset, strategies and support. Mike has lost both his legs as a result of contracting meningococcal and Ben is 98% blind.
Mike and Ben combine their own powerful experiences, and the lessons learned through them, to create Legless & Blind – A down to earth duo with a powerful purpose.
Mike and Ben shared their stories and with an emphasis on building resilience and shared with the students practical tools and strategies to navigate challenges and overcome adversity so as to build positive mental health and wellbeing foundations.
This presentation was made possible by support from Ski for Life and we thank the Miller family for coordinating this with us to provide such a fantastic opportunity for our students.

Common Threads Book Launch
Emmanuel College celebrates 150 years with release of historical book Common Threads
As part of our 150th anniversary celebrations, our College celebrated the launch of our new commemorative historical book Common Threads with a book launch on Thursday August 25.
Featuring a timeline filled with photos, stories and quotes from the school's community through the decades, Common Threads incorporates many voices into a storytelling narrative that is inclusive of Emmanuel's diverse history.
The book launch saw staff, students, alumni and guests come together in the Emmanuel College library to listen to Principal Peter Morgan, Author of Common Threads Jean Christie and Students Emily Edwards and Ash Parrott who read out excerpts from the book.
The College is grateful to have had Sr Marie and Sr Kathlyn attend the book launch and cut the ‘common threads’ cake to commemorate their long-standing relationship with our College and the launch of the book.
College Principal Peter Morgan said he hopes the school, and wider community will feel a sense of joy when reading the stories.
"[Common Threads] has been at least three years in planning and a solid year of researching, sifting and sorting through archival materials and conducting interviews with alumni," said Peter Morgan.
"We are indebted to our Emmanuel College staff, Author Jean Christie and Graphic Designer Melissa Crothers for their compilation of so many materials into such an enjoyable and compelling format.
"I feel incredibly proud to be principal of Emmanuel College, following in the footsteps of the pioneering women and some extraordinary leaders.
"Holding the completed book in my hands is a joy, and I hope others too will feel a sense of joy as they absorb the stories from the past 150 years and begin to imagine where the next 150 years may take us."
Encouraging all students to have a sense of pride in knowing they are a part of Emmanuel College's history, every student's name from the College in 2022 is printed inside the book's dust jacket.

Best Overall Speaker: Joint winners:

Jack McKee, Mercy Regional College
After two years of cancelled events, Emmanuel College Principal Peter Morgan said he is proud to host the festival in 2022.
"The Emmanuel College community is proud to host the Frayne Speech Festival in 2022 after two years of cancelled events", said Peter.
"The Festival is a unique opportunity for students from schools with a shared history to come together and challenge one another at an intellectual level competing in debating, voice choir and public speaking all completed in the course of a single day."
Fostered by Mercy Education, the Frayne Speech Festival is inspired by the first Sisters of Mercy group Leader Ursula Frayne who opened the first Mercy School in Australia in 1846.
Emmanuel College English and Public Speaking Key Learning Leader Catherine Ryan said the Frayne Festival is an example of learning with significant benefits, including critical thinking, articulation and developing confidence.
"We were beyond excited to be hosting Frayne this year - This is the first year since 2019 that this festival has run", said Catherine.
"There is a range of benefits to each activity. In voice choir and debating, working as a team is very important. Debating and public speaking help develop critical thinking skills, research skills, and all areas help students develop confidence and improve their ability to articulate."
"We are so happy that it is back and that our students have the opportunity to push themselves and excel in this kind of competition."

Emmanuel Diary Cover Design Winner 2023
Around 150 students from Year 7 and 8 voted for their favourite diary cover designs for 2023, from a shortlist of five designs (created by Fergus McCoy, Noah Dawson, Milly Graham, Lily O’Brien & Georgia Wiese).
And the winner is…
Congratulations to Milly Graham on creating the winning diary cover design!
The theme was ‘Emmanuel: re-imagined & new beginnings’, with a key focus on the Design Elements and Principles. The design was created using Adobe Illustrator, with layers of shapes, patterns and vibrant colours.
Through her design, Milly has tried to represent imagination and optimism in her design, and she hopes the Year 7 and 8 students ‘enjoy her design and it can bring some positivity into their lives whenever they see it. After the two rough years we have had, I think it's important to try and think positive and be surrounded by positive things’.
A significant focus of Visual Communication Design is designing for an audience, client and purpose within the constraints of a design brief. This project is a great opportunity for students to have their work published and for other students to have a say and be inspired by the creative work of their peers.
Congratulations to Milly, as well as the shortlisted designers: Noah Dawson, Fergus McCoy, Lily O’Brien & Georgia Wiese, and well done to all students in the Year 11 Visual Communication Design class on their creative efforts!

Year 12 Japanese Cooking Lesson
Year 12 Japanese class made Japanese “Kyaraben” (character bento box) last week. People often say it is “too cute to eat.” It actually encourages school students in Japan to eat healthy food and vegetables by making their school lunch more appealing and cute. Our Year 12 students will discuss Kyaraben’s good points, bad points and its influence on Japanese society in Japanese for their VCE oral exam in October. Well done to all students and we wish them all the best for their VCE exam preparation.

A focus on young children's health and development
Recently 9@Rice students explored ways to promote health and development in early childhood through physical activity and healthy food choices. The Health class explored fun ways to promote physical activity and how to modify activities to meet developmental milestones (thanks to Raff at the Indoor Cricket Centre). The Food for Fuel classes compared a range of breakfast cereals, examining sugar, fibre, protein and sodium contents. The taste-testing aspect of this lesson was a big success!

Clay Shooters through to State School Championships
Emmanuel had another successful day at the South West Schools Clay Target Championships.
Emmanuel College had 6 squads – 5 students in each squad so a total of 30 students, with around 300 students in total from schools around the South West, from Ballarat through to Geelong, it was quite a large event.
Congratulations to the following students on their wins on the day:
Bridie Mason - 1st Junior girls
James Wood - 2nd Senior Boys
Dana Russell - 3rd Junior girls
Ebony Mason - 4th senior girls.
These students will now be invited to attend the State School Student Championship in Echuca early September.
Emmanuel College placed 3rd overall for the day.
Mercy 1st
Hamilton 2nd
Emmanuel 3rd
It was an impressive performance by James who had to endure a 30 shot head to head with Tom Clarke (A grade shooter who is able to outfox many adult shooters throughout Victoria)
James did not flinch and was able to show great skill and discipline to win the sudden death shoot out against a highly skilled competitor.
This was a highlight of the day that many people are still talking about.
We wish the students well in the State School Championships in Echuca in September.

Book Week
Book Week Competitions
Book Week and Australian School Library Day was celebrated last week at Emmanuel College. Competitions were held with students taking part in:
- Can you work out the book titles in the jars?
- Can you guess 5 book titles from the emojis?
- Can you match the book shelf or pile of books to be read next with an Emmanuel staff member?
- How many books in the History & War story collection (near the self loan station)? Please note, some are on loan!
There was much talk in the Library about remembering Book Week dress ups from primary school and Emmanuel staff borrowing books to help their child/ren dress up for Book Week.
Book Week has been celebrated for many years. School and public libraries use the Week to promote reading and books. This year the Library staff dressed in special T shirts to mark the Week.
As part of Book Week, the Children’s Book Council announces the winners for each of the different book categories. See the list here for the details of the winners
If you would like to know more about each of these books you can read more information here
Some English classes visited the Library and read the books from the Early Childhood and Picture Book category in small groups and then voted for the one that they thought would win, considering the message, the illustrations, the text, the theme and readability.
The first Australian School Library Day was held last Wednesday. The Library celebrated with popcorn and crazy glasses at Recess in the Library.
From now until Emmanuel Day, staff and students can have a go at matching the Emmanuel staff member with their ‘books to read’ stack or their bookshelf. We have a wonderful collection of these photos on display in the Library. Students are encouraged to visit the Library and see if they can work out five of the photos and match them with a staff member.
Book Week at Emmanuel College also included the launch of the book Common Threads, authored by Jean Christie, containing stories from the last 150 years of St Ann’s, CBC and Emmanuel College – a fitting event to be held in Book Week.
Year 8 Picture Story Book Presentation Afternoon
On Monday September 5, 5.00-6.30pm, Year 8 students and their families will be in the Library celebrating the achievements creating a picture book for younger readers. Each Year 8 student was given the task to plan, write and illustrate a picture book for a student in Foundation, Year 1 or Year 2. Students added blurbs, end papers, publishing pages and amazing illustrations and story to their books to create the final masterpieces. A variety of illustration techniques were used.

Regional Soccer Finals
On Friday the 19th of August the Year 8 Mixed Soccer team headed to Ballarat to compete in the Regional Soccer finals. With a mix of Year 7 and 8’s making up the side, the day proved to be a good test for all involved.
Playing Trinity in the first game of the day the ball movement was terrific from the beginning. However some long passes to advantage throughout the game proved too much for the defence as the Emmanuel side went down 3-0.
In what proved to be the most important game of the day, Emmanuel played Ballarat High in the final game with Ballarat needing a 3-0 win to advance to the State Finals and knock Trinity out of top position. After conceding 2 early goals this looked likely however some strong defence and terrific saves kept everyone on edge. With a minute to go Ballarat scored however this was ruled offside to the delight of the Trinity side. Emmanuel kept out a number of other changes in the final moments showing a great improvement in defence as the day progressed.
Well done to Phil Cooke and his side on their performance and we look forward to seeing them hopefully at the same level next year.
