Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
During July Emmanuel College remembered and celebrated the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy in Warrnambool 150 years ago. In my previous report I wrote about the wonderful celebration involving the whole school on July 14. On a smaller scale, an Elm tree was planted in the school grounds on July 1 2022 to commemorate the day on which the first school was opened by the sisters in 1872. The Elm tree wasn’t just any tree though; it was a small seedling grown from the seed of the historic Elm in the school’s front garden. While we don’t know the exact age of that tree or who planted it, there are only two possibilities. The historic Elm was planted either by the original owner of the property, Captain John Ardlie, from whom the adjacent street takes its name, or the pioneering women who established the school. In my opinion it is more likely to have been the early sisters who laid out the grounds and gardens, whereas John Ardlie ran the property as a farm. While this doesn’t conclusively prove the tree was planted by the sisters, I certainly love the idea of being able to create a new chapter, one potentially lasting for another 150 years, from the same seed stock as that handled by those eight pioneering women. Regardless, the story acquired a certain urgency last year when arborists advised the original tree may need to be removed. Extensive pruning in the last 12 months to reduce the weight of the tree has been completed, and we watch with hopeful eyes to see if it has been saved. A plaque has been prepared for the base of the recently planted tree carrying the following message:
St Ann's Day
Last Tuesday, St. Ann’s Day was celebrated with around 70 St. Ann’s alumni joining us for mass, lunch and lots of talk and sharing of stories. This was the first St. Ann’s day gathering since the start of the covid pandemic. Much like today’s Emmanuel Day, St. Ann’s Day was a whole school celebration much anticipated by students. We continue the tradition today by celebrating mass and sharing lunch and we thank Fr. John Fitzgerald for leading last week’s mass. Afterwards, the small St. Ann’s garden adjacent to the Chapel was officially re-opened following recent restoration. Thanks to Marjorie Maclean who attended the school in the late 1930s and early 1940s for cutting the ribbon on the new works. The beautiful marble statue donated by alumni in 1958 remains the centrepiece, while the garden was restored with a modern twist ensuring it remains an important marker of the history of the College. We appreciate the financial support of both St. Ann’s alumni and Danihers Property Management that enabled this project.
Emmanuel Unmasked
Coming up this week is the school’s variety performance, Emmanuel Unmasked. The challenge of mounting a full-scale musical production in uncertain times has given rise to a variety show being performed Friday 5 August and Saturday 6 August. There will be music, dance, drama and, the appearance of our very own masked singer! The performing arts have taken a huge hit from school closures and remote learning so we would love your support for what promises to be a night of fun. Congratulations to Megan Davies who has worked tirelessly to mount the show. Tickets are available here
Child Safety
From 1 July 2022, 11 new child safe standards replaced Victoria’s previous child safety principles. The standards apply to all Catholic schools whose priority is to create a safe, nurturing and empowering culture for children and young people. An overview of the commitment to students in Catholic schools is contained in the following CECV Commitment to Child Safety. At Emmanuel College the Child Safety Officers are Mr Michael Wrigley, Mrs Claire Wrigley and Ms Rachele Sloane who may be contacted regarding child safety matters.
Congratulations and Well Wishes
We congratulate our senior footballers who competed against the might of St. Patricks’s College Ballarat in the semi-final of the Herald-Sun Shield last Wednesday. Thanks to Ben Woonton for coordinating the team, to Alastair Templeton, Will McNeil and Brian Brown for assisting and special recognition to parent Chris McLaren for his coaching expertise. The Emmanuel team were the School Sport Victoria Premier League winners, and led for much of the first half with the final score: 10.7 (67) to 5.6 (36). We wish our senior students travelling to Mt. Buller this week for a three-day Outdoor Education camp, a fabulous experience, fresh snow and a safe return. We also wish success to those students competing in the Australian Mathematics Competition this Wednesday.
150 Years
The College is launching its 150 year history named: “Common Threads: 150 years of stories from St. Ann’s, CBC and Emmanuel College” on August 25. The book is available to purchase and I think you will feel proud to own a copy and enjoy the anecdotes, stories, photos and quotes representing 150 years of proud history. Books may be pre-ordered now at this link
Condolences
Emmanuel College acknowledges the recent deaths of Roma Greene, Clinton Hall and Michael McGowan. Roma, Clinton and Michael have different connections with Emmanuel but each passed away suddenly during the last week. Roma was a long serving staff member and part of the school’s administration team. Clinton worked for several years as a member of the school’s grounds and maintenance team and he leaves three young children William, Ella and Jack. Michael is the father of Bella in Year 7. Bella’s older siblings Hannah and Bailey also attended Emmanuel. We share our condolences with the families of Roma, Clinton and Michael and pray they will experience the blessing of God’s light and love. May they rest in peace. Amen
I wish you well this week. May the spirit of Mercy be with you and in all you do.
“In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.” (Ps. 89)
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.

Junior School Fit4life Day
On Wednesday July 27 all junior school students participated in a Fit4Life day. Students spent time planning their pathway for next year by completing subject selections and setting goals. Year 8 students focused on teamwork and completed various activities around the theme which included a team challenge walking in house groups along the foreshore with the goal not to spill any water. Year 7 students focused on ‘social justice’ in activities with their homeroom which included a “poverty banquet”. They also participated in a fun active house challenge session in the afternoon.
The highlight of the day was a performance by Action education “Backflips against bullying” which, through a very engaging performance using backflips and various gymnastics moves, shared information about the impact of bullying and ways to respond to negative comments using resilience tactics. This gave students the opportunity to reflect and respond by being inclusive and kind in our school environment. Thanks to all the junior school staff for facilitating a great day for the students.
Parent parking - student drop off & pick up
It is a matter of child safety that we ask parents to use the following locations for drop off and pick up of your child at school. Parents are reminded that drop off and pick up points on the college site are; the Stage car park off Ardlie Street and the Goold loop where parents are to proceed up the road off Botanic Road to the loop at the Goold Centre. The carpak behind the Emmanuel Centre is for Year 12 students and staff only, it is not to be used as a drop off point or pick up point.

Congratulations Jace Nepean
Emmanuel College congratulates Year 12 student Jace Nepean who received a Victorian Premier’s Award at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on July 20. Jace completed Year 12 Physics while in Year 11 last year and his exemplary work ethic and commitment saw him rewarded with a perfect study score of 50. The Premier’s Awards recognise top performing students for their outstanding academic achievements in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), and Jace’s award was very well deserved. He was one of only 290 Victorian students recognised and one of only four students in the state recognised for physics. Jace is currently completing Year 12 and his plans for next year are to study at the Australian National University in Canberra. We wish him every success!
St Ann's Day
Following two years of cancellations, we welcomed 70 plus past students and staff of St Ann’s College this week to celebrate the Feast of St Ann in our 150th year. Much like today’s Emmanuel Day, St Ann’s Day was a whole school celebration during the time of St Ann’s College, which was much anticipated and enjoyed by the students. Today, we continue this tradition by celebrating Mass and sharing lunch together with our St Ann’s College alumni.
This year’s Mass was made very memorable by Fr John Fitzgerald, who provided the St Ann’s girls with some useful tips on what to say and what not to say when reacquainting ourselves with someone we have not seen for a long time.
Following Mass we officially re-opened the recently renovated St Ann’s Garden. Thanks to the financial support of our St Ann’s alumni and Danihers we have been able to restore this valued marker of the history of Emmanuel College. The original statue, still forming the centrepiece of the garden, was donated by alumni in 1958. The re-opening was marked with reflections by Principal, Peter Morgan, and alumni, Margaret O’Sullivan nee Maher. We were also pleased to invite alumni, Marjorie Maclean nee Looney, who attended St Ann’s during the late 30’s and early 40s, to cut the opening ribbon.
Celebrations continued on to the Emmanuel Centre where St Ann’s girls of all generations shared stories and laughs over lunch. One of our Year 7 classes helped to serve lunch, and tried their hand at making tea and coffee for our guests. Alumni were also treated to performances by talented vocal students Amelia McLeod and Flynn El-Hage.
St Ann’s Day continues to be a very special day on the Emmanuel College calendar. We treasure how this tradition sees our students, past and current, come together to celebrate, reminisce, and learn.

Environment & Sustainability Prize
Students have been developing their knowledge, skills, values and world views necessary to contribute to more sustainable patterns of living through engaging in cross curriculum priorities of activities in subjects like Maths at a Year 7 level.
Mr Joseph Alderuccio is our environment and sustainability coordinator, exploring Maths and sustainability, whilst taking into account Catholic Social Teaching of Care for Our Common Home.
One of the Maths activities has been looking at the 1 Million Turtles Program that helps to map out locations of native turtles and population distribution. Such activities helps students to appreciate the value that Maths has in mapping and population, whilst exploring sustainability. The picture of a turtle below was taken at Lake Mombeong, Nelson – courtesy Mr Alderuccio.
These students help to become ambassadors for sustainability and agents for change.
These efforts have not gone unnoticed, with Emmanuel College being rewarded by Environment Education Victoria with prizes of chocolates and keep cups. The prizes were donated by Barwon South West Waste and Resource Recovery Group.

Congratulations to our Year 8 Debating Team
Congratulations go to the Year 8 Debating team who won their Eisteddfod Debate on Wednesday 27th July against Brauer College. They debated the negative position on the topic “Friends are more important than family”. The adjudicators comments gave some valuable advice to all debater’s on the day.
The Year 8 Debate team were:
Harry Sanderson
Amelia Foard
Belle Plozza
Students are to be congratulated for their skills in defining, positioning and rebutting. Debating fosters many skills which transfer to the classroom and beyond. Mrs Foard was so inspired by the debate, that she is in talks to implement a house based junior debating cup in Term 4. It is wonderful to see the re-establishment of public speaking culture after a rough few years.

Year 10 Systems Engineering
Year 10 Sub Trials
Last Term we travelled to the Belfast Aquatic Centre in Port Fairy to run our ROV Subs. For the uninitiated, ROV stands for Remotely Operated Vehicle. Students developed a wide range of skills including:
-Computer Aided Manufacturing of parts including propeller designs
-Electronics fundamentals in making H bridge controllers.
-vessel design and buoyancy
-Engineering Design processes
As you will see from the videos, no two subs were alike and students developed their sub designs in teams.
ROV subs were equipped with two side thrusters and one depth thruster. Students also included video camera systems, buoyancy systems, grab systems and control circuitry.
The task was to collect weights from the bottom of the pool, complete a straight line speed run and navigate a cave (bin) and use the installed sub cameras to take a still image of the message on the back wall of the cave.
As we arrived at the pool, we ran into problems very quickly. Despite our on-campus water testing, within approximately two minutes of deep water testing, each sub’s step down converter blew up and some circuitry terminals broke! Students have been working on this all term and what could of easily turned into a moment of disappointment and frustration, instead turned into a moment of ingenuity and thinking on our feet. I was very proud of all the students doing their best work to develop solutions with very limited resources and time.
With some fast thinking, students re-wired their control interfaces and patched broken terminals with the limited tools on-hand. This was only possible due to the fact that they understood the systems they were working with. It also had the unexpected perk of running our 12V motors hot at 18V!
As you can see from the videos, the subs worked exceptionally well with great dexterity. If we had more time, another water trial session would have been great but unfortunately, this wasn’t possible as the term drew to a close.
From here the Year 10 students can volunteer to be part of an extra-curricula team that will compete at a state and national level, pitting their subs against the best across the state and Australia. This will mean campaigning for sponsorship, developing a folio and of course building a stronger, faster sub with more motors digital control systems and remote operations.
If you have expertise in remote controlled vehicles, marine vessels, electronics or want to become a sponsor of our sub team, I’d love to hear from you.

VCE Drama Incursion
The Unit 4 Drama students are preparing for their VCAA final performance exam which is in early October.
The students are provided with eight different solo structures to then choose one to perform. The structure outlines a performance focus, three dot points of focus that must appear in the performance, a theatre style/s and research material for the development in character and plot.
Students must research their structure and understand the performance style outlined in order to create a 7-minute solo which is performed in front of VCE examiners at The Lighthouse Theatre.
On Wednesday the class engaged in a five hour workshop from 1pm-6pm with James Cutler, a professional actor and director and drama coach who has travelled the world performing and coaching. James facilitates acting workshops across the country to assist students to achieve excellence in solo work.
As a regional school, it is vital our students experience the same opportunities and resources metropolitan schools have access to readily. In late August, the Drama group will also complete workshops with Drama Victoria.

Year 11 Recycled Dance
On Wednesday July 20 at Emmanuel College, we hosted a Recycled Dance for the Year 11's. After missing out on many events such as the Year 10 Formal due to COVID, it was great to get back together as a year level and have some fun.
As fast fashion becomes a growing threat to our environment, the theme was recycled, to encourage students to come in outfits sourced from parents, second-hand, hired, or from op shops, aiming to decrease the impact we have as a school.
The leaders organised Elke Aulsebrook as the DJ for the night and decorated the hall with colorful streamers and balloons. We also had table tennis and a photo booth that were used throughout the night.
The night was great fun with plenty of dancing, singing, pizza, and even a guest appearance of Mr Wrigley on the dance floor. Big thanks to everyone that made the night possible, for sure there were many sore feet afterward.

Senior Boys Herald Sun Shield Semi Final
On Wednesday the 27th of July the Senior Boys Football team headed to Craigieburn for the Herald Sun Shield Semi vs St Patrick's College Ballarat. Heading into the game as underdogs, the side knew a physically tough start was required against a side who has made it to the final in 12 consecutive years.
Emmanuel started the contest well, providing plenty of pressure around the contest which led to turnovers from the slick St Patrick's. Ethan Boyd and Luamon Lual stamped authority on the game from the outset in the backline through interceptions and rebound.
The contest continued to seesaw with both sides having ascendancy for periods of both the 2nd and 3rd quarters. With a quarter to go, Emmanuel trailed by 1 goal however faced a battle kicking against a now considerable breeze. Despite terrific effort, they fell short going down by 5 goals.
The side needs to be commended for their effort throughout both the SSV Championship and Herald Sun Shield Semi Final. They were able to proceed to a stage further than any College teams in recent memory and showed that in the future they will have an impact at this level of school football.

Year 7 and 8 Boys School Football vs St Joseph's College Geelong
On Friday the 22nd of July St Joseph's College Geelong made the trip down to Warrnambool for the first leg of the ‘Brown-Ling’ Cup which is competed for each year by the Year 7 and 8 boys from each school. Despite a strong north wind, both games were played at a high skill level and in great sportsmanship.
Year 7 Game
The Year 7 Game was competed at the Mack Oval with a wind favouring the southern end. Gaining an early lead, the College students showed terrific link up through handball and pressure around the ball. In an arm wrestle of a game it ended up being decided at the last minute. With 20 seconds to go and Emmanuel down by 2 points, College umpire Will McNeil found a free kick for a push of an Emmanuel player at the 50 metre arc. After the free was disputed and the ball being thrown away, a 50 metre penalty was awarded to Max Titmus who now had the game on his boot. Cool under pressure, Max converted the goal to put Emmanuel 4 points clear as the Final Siren sounded.
Finals scores were- Emmanuel 4-8-32 to St Joseph’s 4-4-28
Best players from the side were
- Connor Brisbane
- Toby Hellessey
- Jimmy Stevens
- Blake O’Keefe
- Locki Moloney
- Paddy Sell
Year 8 Game
Played at the Walter Oval the Year 8 boys lost the toss and were made to defend against a strong wind in the first term. St Joseph's showed their class from the outset, kicking the first 6 goals of the game. Despite terrific effort, the Emmanuel side struggled to get back into the contest against a well drilled side with some terrific future father son AFL prospects. As the game progressed many College players found the pace of the game, highlighted by a 3 goal to 1 final quarter. However, it was too late with St Joseph’s running away winners.
Final scores were- Emmanuel 5-4-34 to St Joseph's 11-12-78
Best players from the side were
-Leo Ellerton
-Cooper Lynch
-Jye Quirk
-Sam Graham (4 Goals)
We look forward to the return contest held at St Joseph's College on Thursday September 15th.
