Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
Term three started with the usual buzz last week and quickly saw Emmanuel students and staff participating and competing in events and competitions. Our cross-country runners competed in the state final with success. A sport report later in the newsletter details competitors and age category achievers. Congratulations to each competitor and thank you to those parents who took time and travelled with the team to Ballarat and provided wonderful support.
150th Anniversary
By far the most significant event of the last week was the recognition and celebration of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy, five professed Sisters and three novices, in Warrnambool, and their establishment of a school on July 1,1872. They formed what was known as St. Ann’s College, and later, Emmanuel College bringing education and the Church to the people. The words of Sr. Maureen Sullivan rsm, who wrote to me last week, are a beautiful summary: Congratulations Emmanuel College as you celebrate this great milestone! Congratulations, too, to the founding Sisters of Mercy, their staff, students and wonderfully supportive families who laid the foundations, and to all those who have continued and developed those early dreams. Rejoicing! Gratitude! Blessings!”
The opportunity to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of Emmanuel College last year was severely restricted by COVID, and so it was indeed wonderful to celebrate another extraordinary milestone this year. Thursday’s celebrations took the form of a whole school mass in the Emmanuel Centre concelebrated by Bishop Paul Bird, Fr. Lawrence O’Toole, Fr. John Fitzgerald and Fr. John Corrigan, and attended by all staff and students, alumni of St. Ann’s, Christian Brothers and Emmanuel Colleges, more than 20 Sisters of Mercy, Board Directors and staff of Mercy Education, Warrnambool Mayor Vicki Jellie, members of the College Advisory Council and representatives of Catholic education in the Diocese of Ballarat. It was a proud moment for all of us, not just being part of something unique, but knowing we belong to something with such a significant history and that we continue to build upon that history today. At the conclusion of mass, Sr. Sylvia Williams rsm, immediate past Chair of the Mercy Education Board, gifted a beautiful silver processional cross to the college.
In my acceptance speech I made the following comments:
In 2018 when this building (the Emmanuel Centre) was opened and blessed by you Bishop Paul, I made a speech using the words of the song: From little things, big things grow. It would be appropriate to repeat those words today, from little things big things grow! The little thing in this case was the arrival of eight strong and determined Irish women in Warrnambool to start a new school 150 years ago this month. And the big thing is what we know today as Emmanuel College. One school formed from two smaller schools in 1991 and now, a leading provider of Catholic education in our region. And even though the name is different, the school started by those eight Sisters of Mercy, who opened the school door to the first students on July 1st 1872, continues today 150 years later as Emmanuel College. From little things, big things grow!
Bishop Paul, thank you for blessing this Mercy Cross. From today it will be used at all our school masses, graduations and whole school assemblies. Thank you for leading our liturgy with Fathers John and Lawrie. We appreciate your support of our school and indeed your support for Catholic education across the Ballarat Diocese. Sr. Sylvia, on behalf of all of us who make up Emmanuel College, I thank you for the gift of this special cross, gifted to the College by Mercy Education as a sign that we are now part of the Mercy Education community in Australia and around the world. Please convey our thanks to the Board members of Mercy Education and its Chief Executive, Christopher Houlihan. I would like the students to know and remember something special, something unique about the provenance of this cross. It was made with great care by a master-craftsman in Melbourne. During his working life he also crafted several Melbourne Cups. I hope you will remember that, but I also hope you will remember this special cross links us and our school to every Mercy school, every Mercy hospital, every Mercy community and every person of Mercy in the world. Wherever you go in the world and see this cross, remember you have a connection with that person or that place; a person or a place of Mercy.
This morning I acknowledge the last two Sisters of Mercy in Warrnambool who remain faithfully committed to this school. I invite Sisters Marie Mansbridge and Kathlyn O’Brien to come forward and accept flowers from our student leaders as a sign of our appreciation of your unwavering love for this school, which you both attended as students and where you went on to train as Sisters of Mercy. Like the eight Sisters who arrived in 1872, Sr. Marie and Sr. Kathlyn are part of the unbroken, 150 year line of influential women, who dedicated their lives to mercy and service in this community. In our audience today are other women like Marie and Kathlyn, who either attended this school when it was St. Ann’s, or made the decision to enter the convent and become Sisters of Mercy. I thank each of you for joining us today. For those of you who spent part of your life living in St. Ann’s convent, I hope today is one filled with happy memories. Sr. Marie, we especially acknowledge your years of service as you recently celebrated 60 years since you were professed as a Sister of Mercy. Congratulations! Our love and best wishes are with you and with each of the Sisters here today.
I wish to make one more acknowledgement, and I ask Fr. Lawrie to please come forward to accept an Emmanuel gift. Just a few weeks ago Fr. Lawrie retired as the parish priest of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, meaning he also retired from his work as chaplain to Emmanuel College. Fr. Lawrie we are going to miss you. Indeed, I believe the whole of Warrnambool is going to miss you! Your acceptance and inclusion of people, your welcoming and caring nature, and your extraordinary memory for people, their names and their family connections has endeared you to people, whether they be Christian or not, right across the local community. We thank you for all the times and all the ways you have helped this community to understand the real meaning of Emmanuel; that God is with us. Fr. Lawrie, because you are retiring, we hope you have more time to relax, and so our gift to you is this relaxing chair to help furnish your new home and to rest comfortably in retirement.
To every Emmanuel student in the audience, you are part of something special this year. As I said at our first assembly, there are not many schools that have operated continuously in the same place for 150 years. Whether this is your first year as an Emmanuel student or your final year, Emmanuel College needs you to play an active part in shaping, in creating and in growing the Emmanuel story, both now, while you are a student, and later, when you leave and are alumni of Emmanuel College. Today we recognise and thank the founders of this school from 150 years ago; their work and achievements are legendary. Compared to them, we face very different challenges today. But what you, and I, do to shape and grow the future of Emmanuel College, is just as important today as it was 150 years ago.
Our celebration was recorded and can be viewed here.
Please be conscious it is an unedited link at present meaning there are times where you could fast forward. I encourage you to listen to Bishop Paul’s Homily, Sr. Sylvia’s message and my reply, and be sure to listen to our music teacher Leah Oswin singing Catherine McAuley’s (the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy) own special prayer put to music. Leah is accompanied by Maria Carrass-Kerr, another of our wonderful music teachers.
Celebrating Our History
Emmanuel College’s celebration of 150 years continues throughout the year. We look forward to launching our 150 year history named: “Common Threads: 150 years of stories from St. Ann’s, CBC and Emmanuel College” in August. The book is available to purchase and I think you will feel proud to own a copy and enjoy the anecdotes, stories, photos and quotes that represent 150 years of proud history. Books may be pre-ordered now at this link:
I wish you well this week and indeed through term three. May the spirit of Mercy be with you and in all that you do.
“Let us take one day in hands at a time.
Resolve to do good today and better tomorrow.” (Catherine McAuley)
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.

Uniform
As we begin Term three it is a good time to ensure the correct uniform is being worn by students. The correct wearing of our uniform and our expectations in regards to uniform are very clear. It is not something new. Pride, both in oneself and in our school is evident, when students wear the uniform correctly. We thank the majority of parents for their support of our uniform expectations by ensuring their child/children wear the correct uniform each and every day.
Areas of focus
- PE uniform - Year 9-12 students are NOT permitted to wear PE uniform to school
- Year 12 uniform - students are NOT permitted to wear tracksuits/yoga pants to school - college navy pants or college kilt is to be worn.
- Nose piercing is not permitted. If a student has a nose piercing, they may select one of the following options: remove the piercing when at school, cover the piercing with tape or wear a clear retainer.
Headspace Social Group

How senior secondary pathways are changing?
What you need to know about changes to Victoria’s senior secondary school certificates
The Victorian Government is reforming senior secondary schooling to build the aspirations and
skills of young people, set them up for future careers, and meet the needs of the modern economy.
Victoria is moving towards a new integrated senior secondary certificate that will bring together
our two senior secondary certificates, the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the
Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).
Please see the attached flyer for more information regarding these changes.
St Ann's Day 2022
All past students and staff of St Ann’s College are warmly invited to our annual celebration of St Ann’s Day on Tuesday 26 July.
This year is made more special as we celebrate 150 years since the Sisters of Mercy first founded our school, creating a legacy for generations of St Ann’s girls, and Emmanuel College students.
Who do you know that attended St Ann’s College? Maybe it was your sisters, your mum, aunties, or cousins. Help us spread the word. RSVP is essential.

9@RICE Canberra Immersion Week
Our second group of 9@RICE students visited Canberra late in Term Two. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families and schools in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributes funding of $45 per student towards these costs, under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program, with the rebate being paid directly to the college upon completion of the excursion.
Back at school students reflected on what they had seen and learnt; please enjoy reading two excerpts of these reflections.
As a part of 9@RICE, we had a camp in Canberra. In Canberra, we visited the Parliament House, the Old Parliament House, the War Memorial, the Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon, Canberra Arboretum, the National Museum, National Electoral Education Centre and The Big Issue. It was a very interesting trip and I learnt a lot about Australia and how it works.
In the Parliament House, we went into the House of Representatives and learnt what they do, how they have one Speaker, and that the Prime Minister can only go in that one. We went to the Senate where they have a different design than the House of Representatives. I learnt that there are three chairs in the senate for the President, The Queen and Governor General. I also learnt about divisions and how they have lights on the clocks and alarms for 5 minutes to tell everyone to get into the room to vote. We went to another room to act out a bill for the House of Representatives. The pretend bill was about a sugar tax which the opposition lost by one vote in a division.

We went to the War Memorial on the first day that we were in Canberra. At the war memorial we learned that the boats that they used to get to shore in Gallipoli were made out of metal but a lot of soldiers still died because the boats were to0 crowded for all of them to sit in so a lot of them would be standing up. When the nurses first got there they also had no supplies so they had to make do and rip up their spare uniforms to make bandages for the ignored soldiers.
There is a wall above the Eternal Flame that has all of the names of the soldiers that fought in World War One and Two. In the big dome at the top of the War Memorial is where the unknown soldier lies.
Our tour guide told us many stories. One was about the Australian soldiers who stole a dog called Horrie and he was an Egyptian terrier. The Australians saw the dog running messages to the corporal of the other side and Australia wanted the dog so they tried to bribe it with food. The first time they did it a big shot went off and scared the dog and he ran off; the second time they tried they grabbed the dog and it was now theirs.

Senior Boys Premier Football
On Wednesday the 22nd of June the Senior Boys football team travelled to MARS Stadium in Ballarat to take on Catherine McAuley College Bendigo in the School Sports Victoria State Final. Both sides headed into the game undefeated setting up a tremendous contest between evenly matched sides.
The match started at a high tempo with physicality from both sides midfields a highlight early in the game. Falling behind by two goals by halftime in what shaped to be a low scoring game, the Emmanuel side was requiring a reset. Some positional changes at the break saw a different style being played after half time with the team using run and link up to give a dangerous forward line some good looks at goal.
Clutch goals to Will White and Mitch Lloyd were the difference with Emmanuel taking a 15 point victory and in the process winning the schools first state title in Senior Football.
The side now has qualified for the Herald Sun Shield and take on St Patrick's Ballarat on the 27th of July at RAMS Arena, Craigieburn. Best of luck to the team and well done on earning such a terrific opportunity. This game will also be live streamed with the link being provided prior to the match.
State Cross Country
On Thursday the 14th of July the College was represented by 27 Students at the State Cross Country Championships held at the Yarra Valley Racing Club. In a day that saw many individual PB’s, there was also some team success with the Under 14 boys finishing 2nd and the Under 15 boys finishing 3rd in the team results for their races. This is calculated by totalling the finishing position of the first 4 runners from each school, with lowest total winning.
Well done to all students who represented the school, It's a terrific effort to have such a competitive representation at a high level. Full results for all races can be viewed on the link below for all races on the day.

Year 8 Digital Art
This year we introduced a new elective class at Year 8 level- Digital Art.
Students spent the first semester exploring various ways to create art in the digital realm, including sticker design, character design, low poly art and the creation of GIFs as a simple form of animation using a combination of programs from the Adobe Suite to Procreate.
This class has been so successful that we will now offer Digital Art and Animation as a Year 9 elective as well beginning in 2023. It has been such fun exploring creativity in alternate ways and seeing only the very beginning of where this artform can take our students.

Year 8 Picture Books
Students in Year 8 have been working on their created picture books. They need to plan and write their own story suitable for a student 5-8 years old and illustrate it. Four of the best picture books from each class will be chosen to be placed on the shortlist of picture books. From the shortlist, the best picture books will be chosen and prizes awarded.
CBCA Shadow Judging
Students in the Student Book Club have been involved in reading the six books from the Children’s Book Council Younger Readers shortlist. They are now formulating their creative responses to each of the books. Before the end of July, they will need to vote for the book from the six that they think should win the Younger Readers Category. Last week at our meeting to work out the creative responses we will submit, we shared some croissants for Bastille Day. Ms Smith, Head of Language Faculty popped in to our meeting to help us celebrate.
Library Professional Development Day
On Monday July 18, Emmanuel College hosted the district Library Meeting for school library staff.
