Principal's Message
This week we reach the end of term two which has been one of the most demanding terms I can remember.
Staff and student resilience
The Emmanuel community is to be congratulated on its resilience during this time having worked through a very concentrated period of staff and student illness. Today I was contacted by the local print media for a comment regarding the impact of winter illnesses on school staffing as the topic was covered extensively by the Melbourne media yesterday. Emmanuel has been impacted in many of the same ways as schools across the state experiencing times when it’s been very difficult to replace staff on sick leave. I believe many businesses in Warrnambool have had similar experiences in recent months. I thank the Emmanuel staff for their extraordinary support during these challenging times, including recently retired staff members who have assisted us during the peaks, as well as part time staff who have worked many extra hours. I also acknowledge the students who have accommodated their classes being combined and senior students who have followed teacher directions and worked in our Library. Together we have weathered the worst of the storm and we see the promise of sunshine in the days ahead as school camps, excursions and events are running as normally as possible. As the term concludes I thank the College staff and all our supporters for helping us through. A reminder that this week concludes at 3.25pm on Thursday 23 June with Friday 24 June a correction and report writing day for the Emmanuel staff.
Community Meal
Since March this year a small band of dedicated Emmanuel staff assisted by Andrew McMahon from Mahon’s Catering, have quietly gone about establishing and offering a free weekly meal to members of the local community. The weekly community meal is based on the St. Joseph’s Parish soup kitchen operated weekly by volunteers. The Emmanuel community meal runs on Tuesday nights when the student Café’ is transformed into a simple dining room and anyone who seeks to share a meal together is welcome. Since the first night when we welcomed just one person, we have seen the numbers grow and, since the cold weather set in, we have been serving around 30 people each week. When fully established, Emmanuel students will take over from the staff, and in the process experience the opportunity to be of service and to quietly put mercy into action in the familiar surrounds of our school Café’. I’ve spoken to a number of people who have indicated they would like to help us with what we are doing. For the moment our main need is financial sponsorship to fund the healthy meals prepared by McMahon’s Catering. A donation of $100 provides a meal for ten visitors for one week. If you would like to assist our service, I’d love to talk to you. Please feel free to phone me at the College on 5560 0888 or email me: principal@emmanuel.vic.edu.au
Child Safe Standards
The Victorian Government has announced new Child Safe Standards to further strengthen child safety across organisations, including schools. The new standards recognise the critical importance of families and the broader school community in maintaining and promoting child safety and wellbeing. Additional Child Safety measures are being introduced from July 1 and Emmanuel College is reviewing and updating its child safety policies and procedures to ensure they meet the requirements of the new standards. Our current policy is available on the College website where the section, “A Child Safe School”, is dedicated to child safety information and policies. We are committed to continuous improvement in our approach to child safety and wellbeing and welcome feedback from families and members of our school community on ways we can further strengthen our child safety policies, procedures and practices. If you have any suggestions, comments or questions, please contact Deputy Principal Michael Wrigley at the College on 5560 0888 or email Michael at mwrigley@emmanuel.vic.edu.au Our Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy outlines the measures and strategies we have in place to support, promote and maintain the safety and wellbeing of our students and can be viewed here:

150 Year Mass
On Thursday 14 July, Bishop Paul Bird will be helping us to celebrate the amazing milestone of 150 years since the first school conducted by the Sisters of Mercy began on our current site. Bishop Paul will lead mass beginning at 10am in the Emmanuel Centre. It will be the first time in a long while the whole of the college has been able to celebrate mass with previous efforts impacted and cancelled due to fresh covid outbreaks or school lockdowns.
Please join us for the mass and morning tea afterwards if you can. There will be reserved seating for visitors in front of students and I ask you to be seated 10 minutes before the start time.
Premier League Football
Our Senior Boys Football team, coached by parent Chris McLaren, is playing in the Grand Final of the School Sport Victoria Premier League against Catherine McAuley College Bendigo on Wednesday in Ballarat. The senior team has played four matches of excellent football against some very good teams to reach the final. Thanks to Ben Woonton for his coordination of the team and we wish every player the opportunity to play their best football.
Our Condolences
In the last few days two of our teachers have experienced family bereavements. On behalf of the College community, I share our deepest condolences with Mrs Joanne Moloney and Ms. Anne Marantelli following the death of their fathers. Both men lived very fulfilled lives and left behind loved and loving families for whom we pray:
God of love and mercy, embrace all those whose hearts overflow with grief.
Hold them close during this time of loss and sadness.
May their loved ones know the infinite peace and mercy of our loving God.
Relax and refresh
Finally, I wish those who have time off during the school holidays a good break to relax and refresh. I look forward to seeing our Emmanuel family return safely for the start of Term Three on Monday 11 July.
Mr Peter Morgan,
Principal
St Ann's Day 2022
All past students and staff of St Ann’s College are warmly invited to our annual celebration of St Ann’s Day on Tuesday 26 July.
This year is made more special as we celebrate 150 years since the Sisters of Mercy first founded our school, creating a legacy for generations of St Ann’s girls, and Emmanuel College students.
Who do you know that attended St Ann’s College? Maybe it was your sisters, your mum, aunties, or cousins. Help us spread the word. RSVP is essential.

Year 12 Art Excursion
Last Friday Year 12 Art & Year 12 Visual Communication Design students, accompanied by VCE teachers Ben Woonton and Jacinta Skilbeck and arts trainee Ines Gagniere, travelled to Melbourne to be immersed in a range of creative experiences.
They attended Top Arts and Top Designs respectively, where they viewed some exemplary final pieces and folios created by students from across the state during 2021. Final artworks and presentations included: printmaking, digital illustration, painting, sculpture, architectural drawings, ceramics, brand identity and promotional materials, mixed media and industrial design, and explored a diverse range of themes and design briefs.
It was really impressive to see such a high standard of work produced during another challenging year for students, and it provided further inspiration for our students about to embark on their own folio journeys.
Visual Communication Design students also participated in a street art/architecture tour, which provided an interesting insight into the media and methods behind creating street art, as well as the political and cultural aspects to this medium. The tour also provided a valuable opportunity to explore a range of architectural styles, providing students with inspiration for their upcoming folios.
Both groups attended Blender Studios – the Art class for an extensive stencil and painting workshop, creating some impressive large artworks to explore a range of techniques and ideas. The Vis Comm Design class attended Blender later in the day for a mini workshop using stencils, exploring media and methods that they could utilise in their SAT Folio.
It was a really enjoyable day with plenty of inspiration and the students were a credit to the college in the way they participated in all activities.

Intermediate & Senior Interschool Netball
On Friday June 17th the intermediate and senior netball girls drove to Ballarat for the regional finals. The senior team began their day with two solid games, the latter, against Horsham College, winning by one goal in a tough contest - saw the senior girls make the grand final.
We placed first in our pool and faced off against our neighbouring rivals Mercy College Camperdown. It was a great grand final with some quality match ups across the court. The girls went down by 3 goals in the end but did a terrific job or making the final and leaving as runners up.
The intermediate team started the day strong beating Edenhope college 42-0. The next game was very close where they unfortunately lost by 1 goal to rivals Mercy College also. The quality of netball was impressive and everyone stepped up and played extremely well. The intermediate team finished 3rd in their pool.
Huge thanks to Emma Stacey for helping coach on the day and Charlotte Meade for scoring. Thanks to the students for putting their hands up to play and represent the college.

Intermediate Interschool Football
Our Intermediate (Year 9 & 10) Boys football team participated in the regional finals at Sebastopol. It was a tough schedule with our boys drawn to play the first four games back to back, and three of those on an extremely wet and muddy oval! Our team defeated Mercy Regional College, Horsham College and Ballarat High before being overrun in the second half in our final match by a fresh Trinity College Colac team who were very impressive.
Our team showed fantastic team spirit, work ethic and effort throughout the day, and left absolutely nothing out on the park. A big thanks to Mr Glen Martin for his assistance and to trainee Will McNeil for his great work as runner and getting all of our equipment ready for the day. Will also has the difficult task of washing all of the white footy jumpers after an extremely muddy day!
We thank our students again for their willingness to represent the College and commend them on the way they conducted themselves throughout the competition.
