A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
Over the past two weeks there has been much going on for students as we draw towards the end of semester one. Various students have been involved in sporting groups, excursions and some wonderful student lead events.
Year 12’s creating memories
Year 12 students, although they have been busy with final assessment tasks for unit 3, have still had the opportunity to come together as a Year 12 group for a pancake breakfast and the inaugural Winter Ball. These events have allowed students to spend time with each other creating unforgettable memories. The Year 12 students danced the night away at the Winter Ball and enjoyed dressing up for the occasion. I thank all the student leaders who were involved in leading these events for Year 12 students and Leah Kermeen our Student leadership coordinator.
Year 9 Immersion experience
Over the past week I have had the opportunity to be involved in the second week of the Year 9 immersion program. Spending time with students who were part of the groups at school learning about indigenous culture through stories, language and art shared by local indigenous community members was a wonderful experience. This experience is a unique opportunity for our students to enrich their learning throughout the 9@Rice program.
I also spent a night camping out at Killarney with some Year 9 students as they hiked from Port Fairy to Rice campus over two days. This hike challenges students to draw on their determination and commitment to walk the distance. The weather created a further challenge however, our students demonstrated great resilience to make it all the way back to school! As the students walked back onto Rice campus although very weary they had a real sense of accomplishment, something they will never forget achieving.
A BIG thank you to all the 9@Rice team and other staff who assisted with this immersion week for students. It takes much planning and commitment from staff to support these immersions for the experience to happen for our students. Well done to all students and staff involved in Rice immersion week 2.0.
Fit4life Parent series
This week sees another opportunity for parents to be involved in our Fit4life parent series event, live webinar - Parenting teensagers - presented by Michelle Mitchell. The webinar is fully booked, so we ask that parents who have registered for the live webinar to be held in The Stage to arrive by 7pm. This will be an inactive presentation that will allow for short Q&A at the conclusion of the event.
Change of date - due to the need to postpone our Year 7 Time & Space -Mother/Female mentor & child evening we ask that Year 7 parents put the following date in their diary, Monday August 1 @ 7.00pm. More information to follow.
Parent Volunteers required for Year 7 Time & Space -Mother/Female mentor & child evening - we are seeking parents to assist with facilitating a small group. All training is provided and we require volunteers to attend a training session at 5.30pm, share dinner with us and then facilitate a small group for part of the night. Group leaders will be finished at 8.30pm. If you are able to help please email Claire Wrigley cwrigley@emmanuel.vic.edu.au

Year 12 Winter Ball
Last Friday, the 3rd of June, marked the first ever Emmanuel College ‘Winter Ball’. A long time in the making, the Year 12 leaders along with the staff organised the event for the Class of 2022. After a few tricky years with interruptions and COVID-19, the cohort was stoked to be able to participate and enjoy such an event. Keen to dress up and have a fun night to remember, the Year 12's embraced the opportunity and were thrilled with the support and participation from the year level. Dressed up and ready to boogie, everyone had an unreal night filled with dancing, eating and having a heap of fun! It was a fantastic night and great to see our year level come even closer together and celebrate the achievements and memories from the past five years of our time at Emmanuel. Hopefully a new tradition that continues to be established at Emmanuel, the ‘Winter Ball’ was a night packed full of fun and dancing for the students and the staff! A huge thank you to both the Year 12 leadership group for the hours of planning and the staff for the immense support and encouragement to get such a fabulous event up and running.

Food Studies
Students across all year levels have been putting their skills and knowledge to the test in the kitchen and have created many wonderful dishes over the past coming weeks.
Year 10 Taste the World: Students were challenged to create a HelloFresh inspired recipe card to accompany a Thai style curry. Students produced their own curry paste that they then used in their curry which was made using fresh seasonal vegetables. As part of this task, students researched a number of factors including seasonal produce they could use, tools and equipment as well as skills and preparation time to draw conclusions on whether the dish could be considered a sustainable food choice.
Year 11 Food Studies: Unit 1 Food Studies has explored the history of food from the early hunter-gatherer times to the more modern and culturally diverse food that we enjoy today. Throughout this unit, students have enjoyed preparing a diverse range of dishes including salads using ancient grains, kangaroo fillet with roasted seasonal vegetables and damper sticks, chocolate wattle seed puddings, chicken and pumpkin gnocchi and samosa. Students have enjoyed putting their culinary skills into action to produce a number of high quality and visually appealing dishes.
Year 7 Food Studies: The Year 7 students have recently completed their major design assessment task for the semester. This task required students to design their own pizza using their favourite toppings. Students worked extremely well in the kitchen, demonstrating excellent food preparation and organisational skills. A number of high quality pizzas were produced and some of the toppings included smoked salmon, capers and fresh rocket, kangaroo, tofu and a wide range of fresh seasonal vegetables. Well done to all students.

A session with Author/Illustrator - Gabriel Evans
Year 8 English classes took part in a virtual link up with Western Australian author and illustrator, Gabriel Evans two weeks ago, as part of their study of picture books.
Gabriel talked to the students about the processes he goes through to write and illustrate books. Each class had an opportunity at the end of the session to ask questions.
We were thrilled to have the sessions with Gabriel and thank him for his enthusiasm and the tips and tools he passed on to the students in the sessions.
Check out Gabriel’s books
The website has beautiful illustrations and information about Gabriel’s books. Well worth having a look at.
Gabriel has a new book coming out in August – A Job For Kingsley.
Norton and the Bear, written and illustrated by Gabriel, was published in October 2020.

On Tuesday the 31st of May the Premier Boys took the bus down for an overnight stay and match against Box Hill Secondary College. After a chat from former student Jonothan Brown the team was ready to go and started strongly kicking against the wind. In wet and windy conditions, the team settled well and made the most of a shorter ground by locking the ball inside 50 and getting repeat shots on goal. As the match opened up after half time the Emmanuel midfields clean ball use in the wet was telling, as the side took the win 12-9-81 to Box Hill 2-11-23. The team now progress to the State Semi Final against Bendigo Senior Secondary College which will be held on Wednesday the 15th of June starting 12pm at the Reid Oval.
