Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
Friend, colleague, teacher - Ms Michelle Joseph
The Emmanuel College community received the devastating news yesterday morning that our friend, colleague and teacher, Ms. Michelle Joseph, passed away in her sleep on Sunday night. Our community has been shaken by the news of Michelle’s death. She was just 41 years of age and the mother of two young boys, the youngest just four months old. Michelle first joined the Emmanuel College community in 2004 in a replacement teaching capacity and over time filled various roles until she joined the staff full-time. Michelle has championed the teaching of languages, both Japanese and French, at Emmanuel College and was the driving force behind the growth in languages study, the opportunities to experience language and culture through overseas exchange and travel and the upsurge in academic outcomes, especially VCE results. Her energy and passion for learning was reflected in her own further studies having recently completed a Masters in Learning and Assessment from the University of Melbourne where she received regular High Distinctions for her work. Michelle was very excited to be starting a new role as VCE Coordinator when she returned from family leave in a few weeks time.
Michelle was a dedicated, passionate, committed, and loving Emmanuel College teacher. Her presence will be sadly missed by her friends, peers, and colleagues. Please remember Michelle, her family, and friends in your prayers at this sad time.
Comfort us with your love O God and take Michelle into your tender care.
Hold her close and hold us safe, we who mourn her loss.
Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and let your love forever shine upon her.
May she rest in peace.
Amen.
Take care during illness
We recently passed the mid-point of term two and there are only four weeks remaining before the term break. At the whole school assembly last Thursday, I reminded students the coming weeks are a time for finalising semester one work and completing assessments. I noted that many classes had been impacted by teacher and student absences due to illness this term, and this will be allowed for as we assess and report to families at the end of the term. I sought to reassure students that “we want to look after them and we need to look after ourselves”.
Celebrate Catholic Education, Diversity and Reconciliation
The college calendar saw a convergence of Catholic Education, Reconciliation and Diversity weeks recently, with each one providing a wonderful focus for the whole school assembly. I felt extremely proud of the way our staff and students presented and spoke during the assembly, demonstrating understanding of these events and the meaning attached to them. Meanwhile our signboards and displays, such as the one in the Library below, provide visual reminders of the inclusive, proactive community we seek to build at Emmanuel.
Captain's address
College Captains, Lucy and Finn, addressed some of the issues in these words:
Finn: In May, we celebrate diversity month, and this week we come together to celebrate National Reconciliation Week. It coincides with two amendments to the Australian constitution relating to Indigenous Australians and marked a considerable step forward in beginning to recognise and, as a country, pay our respects to the cultural, socio-economic, and prejudiced actions that as a nation are inflicted on the traditional custodians of our country.
The week is a time for everybody to learn and educate themselves on the shared histories and cultures of our country and to explore how each of us can contribute and participate in reconciliation in Australia. This year the week's theme is ‘Be Brave. Make Change’ and speaks to the role each of us can play in reconciliation. It’s a responsibility that each of us has, as Australians. It’s a need to not only educate yourself about the past, in its realities but also recognise the privilege we have and exercise. It comes down to respect, by respecting others you are in principle respecting yourself. It’s a matter of treating others with dignity. … It’s something we can all take into our own lives, to have the bravery and courage to stand amongst the crowd and make a difference.
Given this, we should all take this chance to learn and amplify the voices of those who are unheard. It’s these differences that make us who we are and our own intuitions to which we find our way through our lives. It is what makes Australia such an amazing country, a combination of culture, diverse thought and conversation, and openness to each other.
Live your life openly. Honestly, if I could give any advice to anybody in our college community, it would be to care less about what other people think, if you are being true to yourself, good things will follow. By being open to yourself, you’ll be more open to others. You’ll find your people. It’s a very freeing feeling. Again, it comes down to respect.
I know it doesn’t seem like it in the earlier years, but you’ll be more respected for being yourself in the latter years of school. Don’t be a participant in institutionalized bigotry. Be a lover not a hater. Let’s not just say, let’s do, our actions are what's needed.
Lucy: Continuing with our theme of respect for one another, here at Emmanuel we take great pride in supporting one another to create an inclusive community. Each student is unique; making our school an interesting place to be a part of each day. Despite our differences in appearance, interests, background, beliefs, sexuality, or ethnicity we are all Emmanuel College students and respecting each other is the key to a safe and inclusive school. The school would not be as interesting a place if we were all exactly the same. Afterall, you have to be odd to be number 1.
Together, at Emmanuel College, we want to look out for and support each other as we incorporate our theme ‘Ride our Wave’. We need to be continuously looking to accept others' diversity and seek passion in our learning irrespective of our differences. As students of the college, we embrace and support an inclusive, kind community; one that helps each and every student to thrive and do their best in a supportive environment.
As unique individuals, we encourage everyone to be themselves and have confidence in each other to feel comfortable expressing ourselves and who we are. (With) varied demographics, Emmanuel is a diverse place where we come together to achieve and celebrate our differences.
Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits. Differences create change and new ideas and help our school community become a great place to learn and grow.
It is essential for us to accept everyone for who they are and how they think as our diversity enriches our community. When students belong to an inclusive environment it allows them to feel confident in exploring new ideas, engaging in learning and being self-expressive, helping our college to be a diverse, creative, and accepting place. As George Orwell puts it: “happiness can exist only in acceptance.”
Landscaping works
With thanks to Property Manager Jason Beveridge and his hard-working team the finishing touches are being put on the landscaping around the building works completed earlier this year. It took no time at all for students to occupy these areas and make use of the seating and tables when the safety fencing was finally taken down last week. My sincere thanks to Jason and his team for their work and to the students for their patience.
The Edmund Rice Centre
With the Science project complete the College is quickly moving ahead with planning for the new Year 9 learning centre, The Edmund Rice Centre. Located at the rear of the McAuley Campus adjacent to the Mercy Place aged care facility, the Edmund Rice Centre will enable the consolidation of all students onto the one campus. The college architects, Baldasso Cortesse, will soon commence detailed design and documentation to prepare the project for tender in 2023. The College aims to occupy the new facility in late 2024 in readiness for classes at the start of 2025. The project will have a $16 million plus price tag which demands extremely careful financial planning, and, it is hoped, support from the Federal government in the form of a Catholic Capital Grant to which the College has made a detailed submission. Grant applications are announced around November-December each year. Should the College be successful the project will proceed as planned, however, it may be necessary to delay the project by one year if external funding is not available. I am extremely grateful for the work of College Business Manager Stephen Kerr, and the support of the College Building and Finance Committees and their expert advice that helps us pan and undertake these projects.
Year 7, 2023
Finally, over 230 year seven enrolment offers for 2023 have been posted to families. If you were intending to submit an enrolment application but missed the closing date, I encourage you to contact College Registrar Mrs Jo-Anne Nelson jnelson@emmanuel.vic.edu.au
At this time, we are accepting names on a 2023 waiting list and will ascertain as soon as possible whether there is need or scope to add another year seven class in 2023.
“Let us take one day in hands at a time.
Resolve to do good today and better tomorrow.” (Catherine McAuley)
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.
Kind regards,
Peter Morgan
Principal
A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
Fit4life @ Emmanuel
Students in Year 11 and Year 12 participated in a Fit4life presentation last week. Students from Year 11 heard from Paul Watkins about motivation, failure and resilience, while our Year 12 students heard about safe partying from Sonya Karras. Both presentations had a captivated audience with students thoroughly enjoying the presentations. Parents also had the opportunity to participate in a parent session with Sonya Karras in the evening, with some great tips provided to parents as they manage teenagers safe partying!
Parent series
On June 16 we have a sold out online live webinar with Michelle Mitchell, for those who may have missed out we will try and secure a recording. It is wonderful to see so many parents supporting our Fit4life parent series.
Uniform
Students are reminded that beanies are not a part of their school uniform. Students wearing beanies at school will be asked to remove the beanie. We ask for parents to ensure that students are leaving home in the correct uniform. All students are expected to wear a blazer to and from school everyday.
Drop off at Goold Centre - Traffic movement
Parents are asked to not drop students halfway up the road to Goold centre. Please use the loop ONLY to drop off students and pick up students at the end of the day. When exiting the school from the road to Goold centre all cars must turn left and drive up Botanic road heading east.

Ethics Olympiad
On Friday 27th May we had two teams compete in the Ethics Olympiad. The Ethics Olympiad provides schools with an unique opportunity to develop skills in critical thinking, collaboration and communication. The students (Eth-letes) are trained by a coach (usually a teacher at their school) in order to prepare for an Olympiad. Age-appropriate and objective ethical cases are released each year and are provided to participating schools well before the event.
During an Ethics Olympiad teams engage with each other and teams from other schools on the relevant cases via Zoom. They work as a team to respond to questions while building and critiquing their own and others' arguments. Our two teams, consisting of Bethany Ferguson, Akira Fish-Laird, Sophia Grant, Sophie Howland, Jessica Keast, Matt Gome and Sithum Kumarapperuma dedicated time after school to prepare for the eight cases that they had to undertake on the day.
The team are to be congratulated on the respectful behaviour that they demonstrated to each other and their competitors. All mentioned the challenges of the day in regards to the brain fatigue they experienced. The need to comprehend and engage with the other team’s position, whilst building upon and transferring knowledge with limited access to notes and whilst thinking on their feet, was a challenging task that they all enjoyed.
All the students involved are to be commended on their participation and effort in what was a wonderful opportunity to be a part of.

Year 10 Professional Writing & Journalism
On Wednesday we were very lucky to have visited the offices and newsroom of The Warrnambool Standard. Editor, Greg Best and sub-editor, Rachael Houlihan, spent the morning showing the class the offices and work areas of The Standard reporters and discussed the field of journalism. It was interesting delving into the different ways news filters into the community through The Standard’s Facebook page, electronic news subscriptions, twitter, Instagram and the good ol’ hardcopy newspaper. The class enjoyed assisting Rachael in writing a short article of their trip to the office. The link can be viewed here

A warm welcome to Simon
Emmanuel College has welcomed Simon Durance, a French student from Paris for Term 2. Simon who is staying with a Warrnambool family for three months, has joined our Year 10 cohort and is enjoying learning about the Australian way of life and the different schooling system. We are all very excited to have Simon at Emmanuel and it is a great opportunity for our students to experience a bit of France until we are able to resume overseas language trips and exchanges. We wish Simon a very warm welcome and hope his experience in Australia exceeds his expectations. Here is a letter of introduction from Simon.
“My name is Simon, I am 15 years old and I come from Paris. My father is 53 years old and he works in book publishing. My mother is 45 years old and she works in a cinema company where she is the financial director. I have one sister, her name is Alice and she is 18 years old, she is at the university. I have also one brother, his name is Leon and he is 10 years old.
I like spending time with my friends, playing football (soccer), basketball with them or just meet at each other's house. I like also go to parties, listening to music and watching movies and series. And I love playing tennis.
I'm here to improve my English because it is not very good.
Australia is a good country because people are very friendly and kind. Here I want to go surfing, meet new people, discover a new culture, and see rare and dangerous animals because it's the reputation of Australia for French like sharks, snakes and big spider.”

The Warrnambool Eisteddfod after 2 years of cancellation due to covid is now BACK!!!!
Last week was very exciting for our Performing Arts students at Emmanuel.
Finally we were able to perform and in a rage of different sections. We are very proud of the way each competitor prepared and took on the challenge of performing in front of an audience.
I would like to extend a very special thanks to our music staff for their dedication to growing students skill, self-belief and love of music and drama.

Getting creative in the kitchen
Year 8 food studies students have been getting creative in the kitchen. Last week students were asked to make designer muffins. Students were given a design brief and got to choose their own ingredients and garnish. There were some beautiful creations, including the popular raspberry and white chocolate but also orange and poppy seed, apple crumble and passionfruit and dark chocolate. Lots of fun and some very delicious muffins to taste.

English Update
This year we have introduced a number of new English texts with a focus on female and diverse voices. At Year 8 we introduced the verse novel ‘Sister Heart’ written by Sally Morgan which is about the experience of a young indigenous girl who is a part of the Stolen Generation. Peppa Janes of Year 8 wrote the following review of the book:
***** (5 stars)
“I've read this twice already, can't stop obsessing over it. It's such an amazing book and I am glad the school made me read it. The ending made me cry of course and I hope the characters have a good life but overall this is an amazing must read book.”
Macbeth Performance
On the 17th of May the Year 10 students were treated to a live performance of Macbeth, by Complete Works Theatre Company. What a treat it was to be able to see live theatre again after the last two years.
Xavier Gercovich from Year 10 made the following comments about the performance:
“The play was really helpful with learning to understand some of the plot. Another good part was when they told us why Macbeth was written and lastly the explanations at the end of each scene were helpful as well.”

VCE Drama: TOP ACTS and The Potato Shed
Over the last two weeks, the VCE Drama class has had the opportunity to travel to Melbourne to see the VCAA Top Acts at the Elizabeth Murdoch Hall, Recital Centre and also to watch a play for their final VCAA exam titled SLAP BANG KISS at The Potato Shed, Drysdale.
Top Acts is a production which showcases the top scoring Performing Arts students in the State from the previous year. Assessment for VCE Drama is by SACS and a solo practical exam and a theoretical written exam.
Through attending the show, our students have commented that they feel inspired and motivated to work hard to produce excellence. It is important as a regional school, to provide opportunities for our students that metropolitan students can easily access. The class is very grateful for the experience even though we arrived home at 1.30am!
Many thanks to Stephen Williams (Jaffa) for always supporting our annual trip by driving the school bus out of hours.

Car Safety
Year 10 Life Science students have been studying car safety – a relevant topic given that these students are at an age where they can apply for a Learners permit. They were challenged to make a vehicle with safety features to support an egg driver!
As an extension of these studies Highway Patrol Officers Uwe Stolzenberg and Holly Coates were invited to Emmanuel to share their knowledge and experience about safe driving. Uwe and Holly outlined the main contributing factors to young driver injury and fatality stating fatigue, distraction, drugs, alcohol and speed were the top five causes. They highlighted the vulnerability of young drivers, particularly those on their red P plates and offered sound advice how to best avoid being a statistic in the coming years.

Back to the Arts
Our VCE Creative Arts students have finally begun to get back to galleries and exhibitions further a field than Warrnambool.
VCE Art students travelled to Hamilton for a talk by Patricia Piccinini prior to her SKY WHALE launch at Dunkeld.
VCE Studio Arts Unit 3 students travelled to Melbourne to view Patricia Piccinini’s exhibition “A Miracle Constantly Repeating” held in the old ball room of Flinders Street Station as part of the RISING festival. Studio students also spent time at the Top Arts Exhibition, talk and folio viewing as well as viewing a wide and diverse range of exhibitions at NGV.
Travelling to Melbourne and viewing exhibitions in City spaces is an important part of our Creative Students growth and understanding of the diversity of the arts and one that we have missed over the past two years. In the next two weeks Media, Visual Communication and Art students will rise early and make the drive down the road. So very excited to hear more from these students when they return.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
The Reading Challenge is now open for students in Years 7-10 to participate. Students wishing to attempt to read 15 or more books during this year (up until September) are asked to get their log in details from Mrs Sinnott. Even if 15 books seems like too many to read, students can use the VPRC digital platform to record the books they do read. They have the opportunity to write reviews and see what other books are popular at our school and across Victoria.
See more about the Challenge here:
LEGO Masters In The Library
Over the past two Fridays, the Library has been the location for a LEGO Masters lunchtime competition with the students being asked to make particular items out of their bag of LEGO pieces in a two minute time frame.
The winners in Week 1 were:
Jack van der Starre
Torin Kamath
Toby Battersby
National Simultaneous Storytime
Many students at Emmanuel College participated in National Simultaneous Storytime, listening to the picture book, Family Tree, being read by Josh Pyke, author. Students gathered in the Library to see the broadcast of this reading from the National Library of Australia in Canberra. Students in Year 8 also took particular interest in the Storytime as they are currently making their own picture book for English.
Parent/Guardian Reading Forum
Continuing with our focus on Literacy this year at Emmanuel, on Wednesday June 8 we will be conducting a Reading Forum for parents and guardians.
Not sure how to encourage your child to read?
Want to know what is available to help with reading?
This is an opportunity for families to find out more about reading, helping their child to find a good book to read and to find out about some of the learning tools we offer to students to help them with reading. The session will be conducted from 5.00-6.00pm in the McAuley Library.
Please see the attached flier. If you would like to attend please email msinnott@emmanuel.vic.edu.au

St Mary's Residential College
St Mary's is an academic residential college, affiliated with the University of Melbourne. With 161 students, St Mary's is a medium sized College. This means that it's small enough to get to know everyone but large enough to gain a wide range of friends. St Mary's places great emphasis on the education and development of the whole person and as such, they encourage the pursuit of academic excellence, while enjoying the many social, sporting, cultural and spiritual opportunities on offer.
On Wednesday the 1st of June Dr. Darcy McCormack (Principal) will be making a presentation in the Wynton theatre at 1.00 pm. He will speak further on accommodation, student engagement, and scholarships that are available to students. Although affiliated with the University of Melbourne, they have certainly in the past offered accommodation to students that attend other colleges, this is certainly a must to attend for students looking at accommodation options
