Emmanuel College Transitions to Mercy Education Ltd.
On January 1, 2021 Emmanuel College officially joined Mercy Education Limited. In many ways the College is returning to the Mercy family rather than joining it as the school’s foundations and first 120 years were inextricably linked to the Sisters of Mercy. Since 1991 when Emmanuel College was formed through the amalgamation of St. Ann’s and Christian Brothers Colleges, the school was governed by representatives of St Joseph’s Parish, the Sisters of Mercy and the Christian Brothers. A two-year transition period culminated on January 1 with Emmanuel College joining 12 similar schools in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia under the umbrella of Mercy Education Limited (MEL). The common connection for each of these schools is their foundation by the Sisters of Mercy. Today, MEL continues the governance of the Sisters whose work began 175 years ago in Australia, and links Emmanuel to the pioneering work of Catherine McAuley in Ireland.
Symbolising the transition to MEL and our reconnection with Catherine’s House of Mercy in Dublin, the front door of the College has been painted in the same red hue as Catherine’s House of Mercy on Baggot Street, Dublin.
Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
Following several weeks of school holidays, it didn’t take students long to return to the routine and structure of the classroom. Last week was a busy week with year level gatherings and personal development activities, school photographs and a whole school assembly. The annual swimming carnival planned for Friday was postponed given the forecast for extreme weather and has been rescheduled for Monday 22 February. The highlight of the week was being able to gather in the Emmanuel Centre as a whole school for the first time in almost a year and it was an impressive sight to see 1250 students, 170 staff, special guests including the highest achieving Year 11 and 12 students from 2020 and their families, all in the one place. The gathering was followed by a whole school photograph taken from a drone and an elevated platform with all of us standing on the oval, and I look forward to seeing the photo reproduced in the soon to be re-opened library acknowledging 2021 as the 30th anniversary of Emmanuel College.
The Senior Awards and Welcome assembly last Thursday welcomed the Year seven students to the Emmanuel Family and congratulated Year 11 and 12 students who achieved the highest results in VCAL, VET and VCE as well as those achievements we were unable to acknowledge last year. Once again, some of the subject duxes were students from Year 11, while some studies saw co-duxes this year.

It was a pleasure to congratulate the Dux of the 2020 academic year with an ATAR score of 99.8, Jacob Gome. In his trademark humble manner Jacob spoke to us thanking the College for its support of his education and encouraging everyone to strive for success while ensuring an outlet that provides opportunities to unwind and enjoy life. We wish Jacob ongoing success as he moves to Canberra to study Philosophy at the Australian National University. Jacob was in good company this year with, for the second year in a row, another two students gaining ATAR scores above 99; Sarasa Deguchi and Harrison Carrol-Beard with ATARS of 99.45 and 99.3 respectively. Speaking to the gathering I congratulated the award recipients and commented that ATARs above 99 are exceptional for any school. For Emmanuel students to gain these scores two years running confirms that Emmanuel College is a school where students can achieve Year 12 scores equal to the highest and the best in Victoria. Equally we celebrate the success of students gaining employment, traineeships and apprenticeships, knowing that in the last six months alone, more than 20 Emmanuel students gained apprenticeships in the local area. With the whole school gathered, the Awards and Welcome Assembly recognises and celebrates student achievements, and inspires each new generation of students to believe they can succeed if they match their passion and interest with hard work.
The 2021 College Captains, Ashley Evans and Wil Wolstencroft, were introduced by the Student Leadership Coordinator Ben Walsh. Ashley and Wil introduced the 2021 College Theme chosen by the Student Leadership Team: Leap. The theme will be developed throughout the year, but Ashley and Wil started to explore it from an historical perspective noting the huge leap of faith required by the school’s founders including, Sister of Mercy, Mother M. Philomene Maguire. Mother Maguire left her family and homeland of Ireland in 1872, taking a four-month sea voyage to Australia where she and her seven companions purchased Wyton House from Captain John Ardlie and set about opening a school on July 1, 1872. While Emmanuel College celebrates being 30 years old this year, it was that school established almost 150 years ago that gave rise to the Emmanuel College we know today. I wish Ashley and Wil, along with their Vice Captains, Molly Farley and Will McNeal, every support and success this year as they complete their own Year 12 studies and lead the student body in our very own “leap year”.
Our guest speaker at the assembly was the first, 1991 Captain of Emmanuel College, Jeremy O’Brien. Jeremy began his secondary education on the Rice campus as a student of the then Christian Brother’s College. During his time at school, Jeremy was a very active student. From Year seven through to VCE, Jeremy held various leadership positions from House Captain, Year Level Captain, to finally Emmanuel College’s first School Captain. His involvement in the College saw him excel at his studies, and represent CBC and Emmanuel in many sports, predominantly swimming and football. After completing his VCE, Jeremy gained a degree in Occupational Therapy, and has worked in the field in Melbourne, the UK and Perth. Following some further study in health and safety, Jeremy joined WorkSafe and is currently working as an investigator for dangerous workplace incidents and fatalities. Jeremy’s presentation demonstrated where hard work and endeavour leads us and was appreciated and enjoyed by the audience.
In the midst of returning to school this term updated COVID regulations require the wearing of masks in schools until further notice. Parents I ask your full support of this requirement. It is possible the requirement will last for a short time only. However, it is expected students will have their own mask and wear it once they enter a school building and on public transport including school buses. Despite this information being circulated in every available format, hundreds of disposable masks were supplied to students last Thursday and Friday. Knowing the vast majority of them will end up in bins makes it unsustainable for the College to issue new ones every day.
With the start of the new school year a renewed effort to have students in the correct uniform has commenced. In my recent letter mailed to all families I said the time teachers spend enforcing uniform rules could be better spent teaching. However, this only works when students comply with uniform rules and parents/guardians support the expectations. Led by Assistant Principal Mrs Wrigley, teachers are in the process of challenging students who are in breach of the uniform rules. One item requiring an immediate response is the wearing of the approved sports shorts. This warning applies predominantly to female students choosing to wear running style shorts instead of the uniform shorts. Once again, I request parent and carer support for this.
This year will be the fourth year Emmanuel College has partnered with “Standing Tall” in supporting community members mentoring our Year seven, eight and nine students.
Students and mentors meet weekly with Matty Stewart (Standing Tall coordinator) and the wellbeing team to engage in games, goal setting and ongoing relationship building. Mentors who are carefully selected for the Program and hold full Working with Children Permits have the ability to change lives and our students who have participated in the program would certainly agree with this. Enquiries regarding the Program can be made to a member of the Student Wellbeing Team.
You should have received a letter from me containing information relevant to the start of year and returning to school in 2021. It contained updates on our staffing this year, detailed results of our 2020 Year 12 graduates, plus a refresh of our expectations for those enrolled at Emmanuel. The letter was sent to every family and while I am conscious it contained a lot of information I request you read it, and where relevant, discuss items with your children. Occasionally I receive parent complaints in regards to not knowing about a change in policy or not knowing what is happening at Emmanuel. We try very hard to keep families up to date with what’s happening, about any changes or initiatives. While we do live in a time of excessive information I encourage you to keep up to date with our news and publications. If you did not receive my first letter distributed through Operoo, please contact the College Office on 55 600 888 and confirm we have your address and details correctly recorded.
May this 2021 school year be good to each one of you and your families. As we begin the new school year we pray:
Lord God, Creator of body and mind and heart;
you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people
in all their ways.
At the beginning of this new year:
Bless the students and their families and the staff of this school, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow
in the ways of your Son, Jesus.
Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding,
and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways;
and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need.
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.

Welcome from Mrs Claire Wrigley
Welcome students for 2021
It was wonderful to see our students return to school last week. The students spent their first day getting to know their homeroom members, settling equipment into new lockers and discovering new areas of the school. Students participated in a variety of sessions which included relevant information shared for their particular year level. A great deal has happened already in the first week of school; senior school awards assembly, a whole school photo and many productive lessons where students have enjoyed meeting new teachers and experiencing new subjects.
College Uniform
It was wonderful to see our students present very well in their school uniform and we would like to continue a high standard of presentation. Wearing of the school uniform well and with pride is a high priority for our school. Our focus will be to support students in the wearing of the correct school uniform and PE uniform. Students presenting at school in the incorrect uniform will be tracked and action taken if the uniform breach is not rectified. All students in PE practical classes are required to have school issued house polo shirt, rugby jumper and school logo navy shorts. We ask that parents support our uniform guidelines by ensuring their child has all the required garments.

A great first week for our Year 7 students!
The Year 7’s have had an excellent first week of secondary school, albeit very busy! Opportunities in Science - E mentoring (In2science) and Girls in Science Online Session
Ementoring - In2science is getting the ball rolling to support students through eMentoring in March when Semester 1 placements begin.
The fall-out in students’ learning has been huge in the last year across the state. In2science mentors are well-placed to support students to catch up on learning they may have missed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are committed to ensuring that no student is left behind. They have some very keen university mentors wanting to do all they can for our regional schools and their students so bring on the requests!
In the coming weeks Emmanuel College students will receive further correspondence including a link to request eMentors . If you are interested in being engaged with an eMentor please speak with your science teacher or Science Co-ordinator Mrs Suzie Wellens - Audrey Bester In2science.
Girls in Science - Join the The Royal Society of Victoria & inspirational Australian women scientists Amanda Caples, Andrea Hinwood, Misty Jenkins, Muneera Bano, Amy Coetsee and Dr Gillian Sparkes discuss their research, careers and STEM journeys. The RSV wants to engage as many regional schools as possible so this is perfect to engage any budding girl scientists.
The event is steamed online and is completely free on Feb 11 at 10am – 12pm. To know more and get the link, contact catriona@rsv.org.au.

VET Music Top Class
On Sunday 7th February VET Music Performance Class of 2020 Alumni, Caitlin Garner and Grace Moloney reprised their devised VET Music Exam performances to audition for Top Class. VCAA annually present the VCE Season of Excellence showcasing the top scoring students in Creative and Performing Arts in Victoria. Caitlin and Grace both achieved an A+ in their VET Music exam resulting in an invitation to audition for Top Class – the music section of the VCE Season of Excellence. After travelling to Coburg High School to audition, they both hope to be one of the 36 acts chosen for the prestigious showcase in March to be held at the Melbourne Recital Centre.
Caitlin cracked out her pyjamas again to perform the songs “When I grow Up” and “Burned Out” from her Quarantine Cabaret, while Grace re-enacted her EP launch in Nashville presenting her original song “Turning Tides Away” and cover of Linda Ortega’s song “Ashes.”
Current Year 12 student Kaitlyn Gust and 2021 VET Music participant Taine De Manser (an external student) were also invited to the Top Acts Drama section of the VCE Season of Excellence both having scored A+ in their VCE Theatre Studies Performance Exam in 2020.
We wish all four participants a successful audition. What an exceptional representation in VCAA’s best of the best – a wonderful achievement for rural schools. We thank Heidi Gass, music tutor and Geoff De Manser from Mortlake College for supporting the students through the audition process.

Religion class happenings…
2021 has started full throttle at the college and Religion classes are underway.
This year starts the implementation of the new ‘Awakenings’ Curriculum across Years 7 - 9 and teachers are excited about teaching the new units they have revised and designed over recent time.
The link below provides the Awakenings Parent Information Video and Parent Information Pamphlet along with further resources for parents can be found here
Year 7 Belonging Unit - Investigating the work of Catholic institutes and/or organisations as a response to God’s call as partners in the mission of the Church. Analysing a range of Scripture passages identifying: literary forms, the historical and cultural context, the author’s intention, taking into account how these passages can inform the lives of people from the perspective of God’s dream for the world.
Year 8 Love and Promises Unit - Engaging with Scripture to explore the nature of ‘covenant relationship’ in the Old and New Testaments. Exploring the mystery of God through an understanding of the Trinity as a relationship of ‘mutual love’.
Year 9 People of Faith Unit - Investigating and considering how Scripture informs the lives of people for a life lived in fidelity to the mission of Christ in the world. Identify enduring components of Catholic identity (Jesus’ mission) in key events through history and discern the impact of culture in the expression of this identity.
Year 10 VCE Religion & Society Unit 1 - Area of Study One: investigating the role of religion in society. Exploring the role of religion in shaping and giving expression to spiritual experience, and other aspects of religion that may vary between religious traditions.
Note: Purchase of the online student text code is mandatory and is used across two years. (Refer to booklist)
Year 11 VCE Religion & Society Unit 2 - Area of Study One: investigating religion and ethics. Exploring how Ethical decision-making and moral judgments are made in societies where multiple worldviews coexist, involving the selection of methods which have guiding concepts, principles and theories.
Note: The same online student text code is used from previous Year 10 RE. (Refer to booklist)
Year 12 Search For Meaning Unit - 2021 heralds a new curriculum for the Passion of Christ theme. The Term 1 curriculum will be more inclusive and delve into recontextualization and higher order thinking concepts investigating how important ‘relationship’ is understanding the Passion of Christ.
Students in all Religion classes are encouraged to participate in class discussions, utilise their Journals for reflections, have a voice and justify viewpoints, tolerate and be respectful of viewpoints other than your own, have an open mindset and a positive attitude in class.
Students often have many questions they may wish to ask about after their Religion class or conversations about what they are learning. These are great opportunities to talk together as a family. Simple prompts to start discussion may be: Was there anything that surprised you in your Religion class this week? What questions did the lesson raise for you? What was affirming for you from what you learnt in RE?

LRC Update
Library Redevelopment and Expansion
Work has continued on the Library redevelopment and expansion. For now, the McAuley Library is in a temporary space in the Convent building. The smaller space has limited the activities that we can have there but we are looking forward to getting back into the completed Library space and being able to offer chess, card playing, Lego, puzzles and many other activities. For now, students are welcome to visit the Library and browse the books to read. There are seats to sit on and tables to work at. There is also a charging locker available for students to charge their laptops in the case of an emergency when it hasn’t been charged to bring to school. Books to be returned can be placed in the blue returns chute just outside the Temporary Library. This Term we will be having a meeting for all existing and new members for the Student Book Club. There will be a message on SIMON on Daily Messages for when this will occur.
Library Lovers’ Day
Sunday, February 14, 2021.
Through the many challenges of 2020, a shining light has been the outpouring of appreciation of the contributions that libraries have made in the community. Library Lovers’ Day is an annual opportunity for people to celebrate the valuable role that libraries play in their lives. Emmanuel College is very fortunate to be having a newly redeveloped Library soon to reopen and an extensive collection of resources for both staff and students to borrow.
Audio and EBooks
Students are able to access audio books and ebooks for the texts they are studying in English.
The texts can be found from the SIMON homepage under School Links – click on LIBRARY.

Class Clowns 2021
Following successful Class Clowns Heats in Warrnambool over the past 3 years, The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is bringing it back in 2021! It will be held on February 23rd from 4:00 onwards at the Mozart Hall in Warrnambool.
Class Clowns is a nationwide competition for students aged 14-18 who are, or could still be, enrolled in High School. Heats are ran all over the country, with winners from each heat moving on to Preliminary, State Finals, and culminating in a National Final to be held during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2021. Many Class Clowns Finalists have gone on to big things in the world of comedy, including Warrnambool's own Tom Ballard, Joel Creasey and Josh Thomas!
Class Clowns provides an opportunity for students who are interested in stand-up comedy to sit alongside a Professional Comedian Kirsty Webeck and take part in a workshop (4:00 - 6:30pm), before performing their comedy pieces in front of a live audience later that night. The workshop gives students the chance to work on their comedic writing, stage presence, microphone skill, and builds confidence as they work towards the goal of performing their piece. This is a completely FREE program with all costs covered by Dirty Angel Comedy and the MICF!
