Newsletter Edition 1/22, February 8.
Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
2022 School year commences
There was a palpable sense of excitement throughout the Emmanuel College community looking towards the 2022 school year. With the implementation of the first College masterplan, the long-awaited new College structure is now in place for years seven and eight to be located at the Goold Centre, year nine to be housed at the Rice Campus to commence the exciting new 9@RICE program, and Years 10, 11 & 12 have come together at the McAuley Campus to form a genuine senior school. It was wonderful to experience the responses of staff and students on day one as they took their first tentative steps into 2022 and our reimagined Emmanuel. Following the usual settling into new locations, classrooms and lockers, classes began in the most COVID safe manner possible. Given the major changes and adjustments that have occurred one might have expected confusion, even panic. But 2022 has begun as smoothly as could be hoped for and it’s a credit to all those who have helped bring together the many pieces of a very large jigsaw.
Building works completed
While the College had a major $4 million science wing and classroom development completed by Fairbrother Constructions during 2021, multiple smaller projects with a combined value of around $1million were undertaken and managed by the College itself. The completion of the jigsaw was achieved thanks to the cooperation and dedication of the following individuals and trades people:
- Builder: Jarrod Gleeson
- Electrical: Stephen Anderson
- Electrical: Leahys Electrical
- Plumbing: Pat Kavanagh
- Painting: Damian Thornton
- Floor coverings: Swintons Carpet Choice
- Air Conditioning: Brendan Holschier
- Windows & Glazing: Anthony Creece
- Joinery: GM Cabinets and Gerard Gleeson
- Project Management: Emma Banner
- Architectural: Matt Cirillo
These contractors have worked beyond the regular Monday to Friday work hours to ensure the projects were completed and ready for student use on day one. I thank them very sincerely for their work. Collectively their efforts have enabled College staff members responsible for these projects to bring them to fruition. I thank College staff members:
- Stephen Kerr: Business Manager & overall project(s) coordination
- Jason Beveridge: Property Manager & onsite coordination of trades
- Glen & Jack: Grounds & maintenance
- Michelle & Sarah: Cleaning
I am both proud and appreciative of the way all the above have enabled the 2022 school year to start on time and as we wanted.
Awards Assembly
It was anticipated the College community would come together last Thursday for the first whole school gathering to recognise the highest achieving year 11 and 12 students of 2021 and for this year’s College Captains to launch their 2022 theme. Once again, COVID restrictions prevented this happening and instead the presentations and speeches were live streamed into classrooms and watched by staff and students and those at home via the following link that I invite you to view. The first ten minutes includes the 2021 winning entry in the Arts Hall of Fame, a video entitled, “Our Place”, by Thomas Graham: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N04anZb0QYs

Ben Pennington and Daniel Mahoney, the two highest achieving students of 2021, on behalf of their year level, spoke about their experiences of Emmanuel College over six years and shared their ideas with students on how to make the most of the opportunities available to Emmanuel students.
A new tradition was established this year with last year’s Captain Ashleigh Evans presenting the 2022 Captains, Lucy El Hage and Finn Cook, with distinctive new College Captain’s blazers. I am sure, being the inaugural recipients, Lucy and Finn will wear their new blazers with exceptional pride. Our thanks to uniform suppliers Noone who created the distinctive new blazers and enabling the establishment of this tradition. The assembly continued with the College Leadership Torch being transitioned, just like the Olympic torch, to Deputy Captains Bree Fox and Jamie Lloyd by last year’s Deputy Captain, Molly Farley. Lucy, Finn, Bree and Jamie proceeded to launch and explain the student theme for 2022 “Ride our Wave: Resurface, Reimagine & Recreate”.
Ride our Wave
The 2022 theme contains an invitation to each student to endeavour to crest the Emmanuel wave this year; a year the Captains note is the 150th year since the first school was established on this site in 1872. There are some, but not many schools in Victoria that are 150 years old, and with that information I encouraged every Emmanuel student to have pride in being a member of the Emmanuel Family and to ensure their efforts and actions will make the generations that came before and the generations that will follow, know pride in what we achieve in 2022. I wish Lucy and Finn, along with their Vice Captains, Bree and Jamie, every support and success this year as they complete their own Year 12 studies and lead the student body to “Ride our Wave”.
Uniform
With the start of any new school year there is renewed effort to ensure students wear correct uniform. Assistant Principal, Mrs Claire Wrigley, has reminders about uniform requirements in this newsletter and I request every family’s full and ongoing support to ensure students are correctly presented and appropriately prepared for school each day.
Parent Nights
This week sees a number of welcome events for families and the opportunity to meet the school staff working with your children and to visit their classrooms. On Tuesday the Year 7 Information and Welcome Night starts at 7pm. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5.30pm, there is a new opportunity for parents to attend a House Welcome. The new format reflects the changes to the senior school and so invitations are based on student’s House, rather than Year Level. Communication was shared with all Year 10, 11 and 12 families last week inviting you to the Rice and Maguire House Welcome event on Wednesday and the Egan and McAuley House gathering on Thursday. If you did not receive this information please make contact with our College Office to ensure your email and address details are correct. I look forward to meeting you over these three welcome events. A 9@RICE Welcome event is scheduled for the following Tuesday 15 February at 7pm. Please come along and support these initiatives and take advantage of the opportunity to meet your child’s Home Room Teacher or House Mentor.
Independant Learning Day
Please take note of the introduction of an Independent Learning Day on Wednesday 16 February for Years 8, 9 10, 11 & 12. With both year seven camp and year 11 retreat running in the same week there is an enormous impact on staffing which is also stretched at this time by COVID related absences. While students will not attend school on this day, it is not a holiday. The experience gained through remote learning in 2020 and 2021 enables us to provide on-line learning for students via their Google Classroom for each of their subjects timetabled on Wednesdays. As the name of the day suggests, students are expected to work independently in their home study environment and complete the tasks set by their teachers.
May the 2022 school year be good to each one of you and your families. As we begin the new school year we pray:
Lord God, Creator of body and mind and heart;
you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people
in all their ways.
At the beginning of this new year:
Bless the students and their families and the staff of this school, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow
in the ways of your Son, Jesus.
Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding,
and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways;
and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need.
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.
Kind regards,
Peter Morgan,
Principal.
A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
It is so wonderful to have our students back at school for the beginning of the 2022 school year and we warmly welcome our new Year 7 students and new students to our school across years 8 -12. We begin the school year yet again with CECV restrictions which impact on events and general day to day running of the school. Given the current COVID restrictions it is mandatory for all students to wear a mask on school buses and indoors at school. We thank all the students who are supporting this expectation to assist with a COVID safe environment.
8th February is Safer Internet Day, 2022.
This Safer Internet Day, we are calling on everyone to play it safe and fair online.
Join the global initiative that brings families, schools, organisations and governments from 170 countries together to raise awareness about online safety. Each day this week there will be information shared on the students bulletin about various online safety tips.
There is no place for online abuse. We can all help to make life online enjoyable by being kind and respectful to each other.
Many students are playing these games online. Click on The eSafety Guide to learn more about the latest games, apps and social media, including how to protect your information and report inappropriate content.

Sunsmart at Emmanuel
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with two in three Australians developing some form of skin cancer before age 70. Yet, most skin cancers can be prevented by using sun protection measures at appropriate times of the year.
The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the major cause of skin cancer. Too much UV exposure can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancer. UV damage accumulated during childhood and adolescence is strongly associated with an increased risk of skin cancer later in life.
At Emmanuel College all students are required to have a college wide brim hat that should be worn at recess, lunchtime and during PE classes in term 1 & 4. We ask parents/carers to ensure your child has a hat.
Uniform - “Our school pride”
We thank the majority of students and parents who have ensured they have the correct uniform upon return to school. We also thank parents for being patient in regards to some uniform order yet to come in. Wearing the correct uniform reflects a student's pride in their school. All homeroom teachers and mentor teachers will conduct a spot uniform check this week which will include a check of jewellery.
We listened to the student voice committee in 2021 and have implemented the allowance of two small stud/sleeper earrings per ear. Please note as per guidelines nose piercing is not permitted and even under masks students should not have any nose piercing whilst at school.
For a complete outline of uniform expectations please refer to the link below;

House Swimming Carnival
On Tuesday Feb 22 we will hold our swimming carnival at Aquazone. This is a fun day for all and students are encouraged to wear their house colours or PE uniform. More information about the day will be shared with students closer the day and they will be involved in house meetings on Thursday.
All students are expected to attend on this day. Students are not permitted to leave directly from Aquazone.
If there are extenuating circumstances requiring a student to leave from the pool at any time during the day or end at the of the day, a note from your parents has to be given to your child’s homeroom teacher or house mentor prior to Monday February 21 explaining why your child has to leave.
Any student who has approval to leave the carnival must have their parent/carer ONLY physically come in and sign you out from the pool at the foyer or swim club back gate. Students are not permitted to leave with a friend's parent.
Edrolo Resources
Edrolo is an resource that is widely used at Emmanuel College for many years. Initially it had one subject, Year 12 Chemistry, and had online videos and questions. Over time it has expanded to include most Year 12 VCE subjects and has introduced textbooks for some subjects and practice exams with online video support for every question. It also covers several Year 11 VCE subjects.
In late 2021, Emmanuel was invited to trial the new Edrolo Year 7 Workbook 1 for Mathematics and Science for free. This was after the booklists had been distributed. The year 7 workbooks also come with online access to assist students with answering questions and understanding the content. Due to the size of the books, it has been decided that these books are too heavy for Year 7 students to be carrying to and from school. Therefore, some classes are keeping these books at school while other classes are keeping the books at home.
Teachers will be using mainly using the purchased resources of MathsPathways and Matilda Good Science during their classes. The Edrolo resources are supplementary resources for year 7 in 2022.
VCE Edrolo Textbooks are being used at Emmanuel in 2022 by the following subjects:
- Units 1 – 4 Biology
- Units 1 – 4 Chemistry
- Units 1 – 4 Psychology
- Units 1 – 4 Business Management
- Units 1 – 2 General Mathematics
- Units 3 – 4 Further Mathematics
Please note that Edrolo revises these books each year and releases new versions of the textbooks each year and so cannot be sold second hand. Students are encouraged to write in these books to ensure that they get the maximum benefit from them.
Kind regards,
Simone Rolfe,
Director of Learning.

Bookmarks From Portugal
Over the Summer break we received a pack of beautifully hand crafted bookmarks made by students from a school in Portugal. At the end of 2021 the students at Emmanuel College sent their hand crafted bookmarks to Portugal. This was part of International School Library Month celebrations in October.
Library Lovers’ Day
Emmanuel College Library will participate in some activities for Library Lovers’ Day on Monday 14 February. On this day we are asked to think about the place libraries play in our lives, how we have found adventures in books or have visited a great Library and found out information. The Library will have some competitions for students to participate in. Visit the Library to find out what is happening.
Your Emmanuel Family Tree
A big thanks to all the families that have completed their Emmanuel Family Tree. The response so far has been terrific and we are learning a lot about the connections to our Emmanuel Family. The response so far has uncovered that many of our students we welcome as the first generation to attend Emmanuel. Equally, we have students that are second and third generation, and others have been able to link back as far as the early 1900s!
If you still need to complete Your Emmanuel Family Tree, you can complete it online here at https://tinyurl.com/EC150Years If you prefer to complete it on paper additional copies are available at the Administration Office.

Warrnambool Climate Action Rally
Dear All,
Our Climate Walk and Rally is now set for Saturday April 2. Please share this with all your friends and colleagues who agree that: “We want all politicians and political parties to treat the climate crisis as an emergency demanding urgent action.”
This will be a big, colourful walk and rally. Many people and groups will walk from Lake Pertobe, others will join in at Cannon Hill and some will choose to wait for the party to arrive at the Civic Green.
Banners, placards, drums, dance, the Red Rebels, the giant XR Bushfire Koala and you and your friends and colleagues will make this Climate Walk and Rally powerful and unable to be ignored.
Please think about how you, your group or your workplace can join in with your special message about climate change and how to avoid catastrophic global heating.
If you represent a group and would like to be in a photo of a group of people who represent a range of groups who want to see urgent climate action, please let us know.
