Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
Emmanuel Awards Ceremony
Today we celebrated the Student Awards Ceremony with staff and students in the Wyton Theatre recognising students from Years 7-12 in a variety of areas across the spectrum of academic, endeavour, cultural and sporting achievements. This was the final College event for the 2021 calendar and it reminded us that even while COVID impacted many normal school experiences, Emmanuel students continued to achieve extraordinary outcomes deserving our pride and recognition. The 2021 Year 12 results will be released by the Victorian Curriculum & Assessment Authority this Thursday and the College Dux and Year 12 Award winners will be recognised at the 2022 Opening School Year Assembly on February 3, 2022. Today’s Award Assembly was recorded and families are welcome to view the event at this link:
A full list of award recipients is available in this newsletter.
We look forward to welcoming families to this uplifting event again in 2022.
College Office Closure
The College Office closes this afternoon and reopens on Thursday 20 January, 2022 at 8am.
A Fond Farewell
At the end of the 2021 school year the College says farewell to the following staff whom we wish well in retirement or the pursuit of new pathways:
- Catherine Taggart is retiring at the end of 2021 after 30 exceptional years of service to the Emmanuel community. Generations of Emmanuel students began their secondary journey in Catherine’s homeroom where she instilled strategies and skills that set them up for their next six years of successful learning. We wish Catherine good health and lots of enjoyment on her camping trips and travel around Australia.
- We farewell Cherryll Courtney who retires at the end of the year. Cherryll has worked at Emmanuel for six years but she has had many years of prior teaching service as a genuinely caring teacher. Cherryll we wish you a happy retirement and more relaxed lifestyle.
- After 13 years Carolyn Roache will conclude her teaching at Emmanuel this year. We wish Carolyn success as she explores the opportunities that await her in the future and thank her for the variety of roles she has filled at Emmanuel.
- Cindy Baluch-Brown completed her secondary education at Emmanuel College and has taught and held leadership roles here for 15 years. Cindy embarks upon a new journey next year relocating to the Wimmera and teaching at Murtoa Secondary College. We wish Cindy happiness and success.
- Fiona Stephens has worked in the Emmanuel College library for 19 years during which time the Library has grown substantially. We wish Fiona happiness and we trust she enjoys the change of pace next year.
- Best wishes to Jan Mahoney leaving Emmanuel College after 14 years working in the College Library. We trust Jan enjoys the change of pace and the additional time with family, especially grandchildren.
- Jacqui Floyd is leaving the College after 10 years teaching English, RE and the Arts. We wish Jacqui well and trust she has the time to pursue and complete her own art works.
- At the end of this year Josie Long retires after 19 years of service to the College teaching Food Studies. Josie has a long connection with the school having also attended St. Ann’s College. We wish her good health, happiness and time to pursue her own interests.
- After 15 years at Emmanuel College teaching English and holding leadership positions, Jenny Konigson is relocating to Geelong where she has accepted a position at St. Joseph’s College. Jenny will be missed and we wish her success at her new school.
- Marko Wakim is leaving the College having accepted a position as a school Chaplain in another school. Marko has taught materials technology and RE and was Year 10 Assistant Coordinator for several years. We wish him satisfaction and success in his new role.
- Simone Beaton has only been with the College for a short time and is returning to Western Australia. We wish her every success.
- We had another wonderful group of Trainees this year who are commended for their assistance to teachers and students. Thank you and farewell to Emily Conheady, Conor Cook, Sarasa Deguchi, Jacque Dickson, Clancy McCoy, Angelina Mentha, Louis O’Callaghan and Mathew Sell. We wish you success in your university studies and future career paths.
- At the end of the year the following staff will conclude contract work at the College: Sharon Bonnett, Renato da Ros, Emily Porra, Gerard Bourke, Emma Askew, Marie Morgan, Penny Ryan, Sophie Von Tunk, Ann Hegarty, Bryce Courtney and Stephanie Walter. We thank each one of them for their flexibility and assistance to cover a range of subjects for various lengths of time during 2021.
- During 2022, Brian Brown, Anne Marintelli, Debbie Nepean, Leigh McClusky, Michelle Joseph, Ruby Wilson and Brooke Jones will take leave for between one semester and one year. We wish all of them good health and happiness during their period of leave.
A Blessed Christmas
As the year concludes I thank everyone who helped make our 2021 journey successful despite the extraordinary challenges we and the world have faced this year. I wish you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas, health and happiness throughout 2022.
Gracious God of unending Love,
We, your people, seek the dawning
of hope in Christ’s coming among us as Your Emmanuel.
Shine in and through us,
Heal our wounds and sooth our grief,
Rejoice within us for the many successes
and abundance of blessings this community shares,
and renew our vision, our spirits and resolve for the coming year.
We ask this through Jesus, Our Beloved Emmanuel,
who lives and loves with You and the Holy Spirit,
One God forever and ever.
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.
Kind regards,
Peter Morgan
Principal
A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
As the year draws to a close, we would like to congratulate all the students on making it through 2021 and achieving personal growth in their studies and social-emotional development. We also thank the staff and parents for all the support extended to our students to assist them through the year. We hope all our students have a restful, safe and happy holiday and we look forward to seeing them all in 2022.
Assessment and Reporting are integral parts of the teaching and learning program at Emmanuel College. As Semester Reports are available from midday on the 13th December, it is strongly encouraged that you share discussion with your child in regards to acknowledging achievement, as well as discussing areas of future growth with their learning. All comments and feedback can be located on PAM in the Learning Areas section.
As we look towards 2022, we will focus on “back to the basics” and with that comes a need to create routine and good practice. We ask that as the holidays draw to close in late January students are aware of the uniform expectations and return to school in a positive manner, ready to work with their teachers. To help with understanding the expectations and breach of uniform procedures please see the link below; it is important for parents and students to be aware of these expectations so that conversations with students have a positive outcome.
Emmanuel College Uniform Guidelines and Procedures
Families can buy and sell second hand uniforms on the Sustainable School Shop web site. https://www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au/
To support you in purchasing uniforms second hand, the College has paid a subscription to the Sustainable School Shop. You can register and search for sale ads, you can contact the seller directly, buyers will contact you.
Timetables will be released on SIMON on January 20 and students will be able to access their classes and allocated homeroom/mentor group. Much work goes into the formation of homerooms/mentor groups by teachers and Year Level Coordinators. Homeroom/mentor group formation considers students' learning needs, distribution of gender and placement of students to create a positive learning environment.
We do not change students unless there are exceptional circumstances as deemed appropriate by the Management Team of the college. Parents were all given the opportunity in September to inform Year Level Coordinators of any information specific to their child that may assist with homeroom/mentor group placement. Changing students in homerooms/mentor groups has a significant effect as it often impacts on other students and cannot happen due to capacity numbers.
Students are not placed by friendship groups into homerooms/mentor groups but more so with good working buddies. As students move up the year levels, it is important to develop resilience and coping strategies that will assist them as they move into their work places in the future. With structural changes planned for the beginning of 2022, we enter into our reimagined learning environment at Emmanuel College. We look forward to working with our students and families to achieve positive outcomes and growth for all.
Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New year!
Claire Wrigley
Assistant Principal
Faith & Mission Report
In Catholic Churches all around the world you will see an advent wreath. The lighting of the candles on the wreath symbolises the coming of light, Jesus, into the world. The four candles of Advent represent hope, peace, joy and love. This year we have been able to see all elements lived out at Emmanuel College, both through the actions of students, staff and the wider school community of past students, families and friends.
To celebrate the mystery of Christmas I share with you an adaptation of the words shared by Fr. Richard Rohr, a Franciscan Priest who shares his own reflection on the importance of celebrating an eternal advent.
‘In the first 1200 years of Christianity, the greatest feast was Easter with the high holy days of Holy Week leading up to the celebration of the resurrection of Christ. But in the 13th century, a new person entered the scene: Francis of Assisi felt we didn’t need to wait for God to love us through the cross and resurrection. Francis intuited that the whole thing started with incarnate love, and he popularized what we now take for granted as Christmas, which for many became the greater Christian feast.
Francis realized that if God had become flesh—taken on materiality, physicality, humanity—then we didn’t have to wait for Good Friday and Easter to “solve the problem” of human sin; the problem was solved from the beginning. It makes sense that Christmas became the great celebratory feast of Christians because it basically says that it’s good to be human, it’s good to be on this earth, it’s good to be flesh, it’s good to have emotions. We don’t need to be ashamed of any of this. God loves matter and physicality.’
With that insight, it’s no wonder Francis went wild over Christmas! (I do, too: my little house is filled with candles at Christmas time.) Francis believed that every tree should be decorated with lights to show their true status as God’s creations! And that’s exactly what we still do 800 years later.
Fr. Richard Rohr
Whilst Christmas is a wonderful time for many, there are those who will go without at this time of year and we encourage all to do what they can to support those who need a ‘hand up’ at this time. We also say thank you to all the students and families who have supported the many fundraising events that have taken place throughout the year that benefit those within our local and wider community.
May all members of the Emmanuel College community be filled with joy and peace this Christmas.

National Chess Competition
National Chess Competition
On the 29th and 30th of November, Emmanuel College participated in the annual National Chess Finals. Over the two days, the participants were afforded the opportunity to listen to lectures run by Grand Masters commenting on past matches between world class chess players. Each player played seven rounds of chess. There were 28 schools from around Australia who participated in the Nationals. At the end of the competition, Emmanuel’s team were placed 21st. This was certainly a pleasing result as Emmanuel played in the Open division with four of our five players being junior players.
The Table below gives a summary of the Teams results.
Name | Points Scored | Position Nationally |
Charlie Clancey | 3.5 | 80 |
Reuben Knoll-Miller | 3 | 112 |
Isaiah Pickett | 2 | 141 |
Edward O’Connor | 1.5 | 152 |
Jed King | 1 | 157 |
A big congratulations to all our players on playing well over the two days and gaining National, competition level experience. We all look forward to 2022 and hope to be competing face to face for the upcoming competitions. A big thank you to Margaret Sinnott for her help and support of Chess in the Library during 2021.
Andrew McKenzie,
Chess Coordinator.
Emmanuel Equestrian Team - State Representatives
Our Emmanuel Equestrian Team continues to shine with some great recent achievements.
With complexities around litigation and insurance, the school equestrian team had all but disappeared, but in 2014 it was put forward to the school to be resurrected by teacher Jacqui Floyd, and with great support from local Pony Club and EV affiliated parents and students it has enjoyed a strong comeback. The Emmanuel Equestrian Team has grown in popularity in recent years, with a number of students dedicated to their sport and their horses, competing regularly at Inter School events and at interstate level. Despite the restrictions of COVID-19 on the ability to travel, train and practise, the passion and commitment continues.
Earlier this year Charlotte Dyson (Year 10) and Matilda Graesser (Year 7) qualified to represent Victoria at the Pony Club Australia National Championships. This event is held every two years and rotated around the country. Due to COVID, the 2021 National Championships were held ‘virtually’ in September-November, enabling those selected for their state teams to compete, and everyone to enjoy the action.
Charlotte rode in the Junior Maiden Ride 2 Time Team on her horse Custom Made and Matilda rode in the Eventing Team. These times and scores were taken at the start of November and the girls are still awaiting results for Nationals.
At a recent Inter School Event on November 20, Matilda, Ella Gapes and Charlotte all represented Emmanuel College in Show Jumping and Dressage, all competing in the EVA95, with Matilda placing 1st, Charlotte 3rd and Ella 5th. A wonderful achievement!
Wellbeing MnMs
Wellbeing have run our program called MnMs through the later half of this year, battling through lock downs to engage a small group of dedicated year 7 students in mindfulness and social skills practice.
We celebrated the final session with a picnic, bubbles and uno in the front garden and even Mrs Wrigley joined us for a few moments to blow some bubbles with our fabulous crew.

Your Emmanuel Family Tree
How far back can you go?
In 2022, we celebrate 150 years of education on the site we know today as Emmanuel College. In our 150th year, as we re-imagine Emmanuel, it is important to take time and reflect upon: where we have come from, how we have changed and grown and where we are going.
Milestone celebrations such as this, present opportunities to encourage all in our College community to respect the traditions of the past and have a sense of pride in knowing they too are a part of Emmanuel College history.
In the mail, all families have been sent a gift to commemorate this occasion. Within the package sent, you will find a family activity – Your Emmanuel Family Tree. Please join in this year of reflection and celebration by sharing your Emmanuel history with us by completing this activity. By identifying any previous generations of your family who are Emmanuel, St Ann’s or CBC students, will help us to learn how far back in our history the generations of our current families have remained connected to Emmanuel College.
If you prefer, your Emmanuel family tree can be completed online at: https://tinyurl.com/EC150Years
