Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
Last week I had the experience of looking out my office window at lunch time and doing a double take when I saw students sitting on the lawns and under the trees having their lunch together. It’s been so long since I last saw this scene that I had forgotten the joy that comes with seeing students enjoying the company of their friends. As the week unfolded and we welcomed back more year levels and with more staff onsite daily, and by Friday with everyone back, the place has resumed that “school” feeling once more. A simple but wonderful thing for which I am very grateful!
Congratulations to our Year 12 Students
Congratulations to each and every one of our Year 12 students who ended their formal secondary journey last Monday. Their senior school experience has been marked by a global pandemic which had the most extraordinary impact on their learning, their time at school and the many experiences that normally accompany the final years of school. Yet, there they were last Monday, smiling and celebrating their achievement of a truly significant milestone despite the circumstances and the duress under which it was completed. In his farewell speech to the students, Year 12 Coordinator, Sean Fitzgibbon, commented on the circumstances under which the last two years have been completed. He quoted George Bernard Shaw: “People are always blaming circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are those who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.” In his own words Mr Fitzgibbon acknowledged the class saying: “I’ve spent enough time with all of you, the members of the Class of 2021, to know that you fit the mould of those willing to find or make the circumstances they want. There is no denying that your VCE and VCAL years have been challenging, but with every problem you have faced and overcome, you have developed the skills, the grit and the attitude to get on in this world and to get what you want when many others have fallen by the wayside.” A highlight of the final, socially distanced, gathering was Grace Kenny’s Valedictory song, “This is us coming to the end”, which accompanied Grace’s performance of her own choreographed dance and culminating a tradition Grace began in Year 7 on Emmanuel Day dancing for our pure enjoyment. As is so often the case, the realisation that, other than for the final examinations starting on Wednesday, this was to be one of the last times the class of 2021 would be together. There is something both celebratory and sadly emotional about the realisation that the journey that began six years ago has concluded for this group of young Emmanuel alumni. We wish everyone of our Year 12 students happiness and success in their journeys that now begin.
Student Leaders and College Captains
One of the extraordinary and privileged experiences those of us who work in secondary schools have each year is witnessing the cycle of students beginning and ending inexorably unfold. While the start of last week saw the Year 12’s finish, later in the week we recognised the next generation of Emmanuel student leaders and College Captains. The rigorous process of selecting the 2022 Student Leadership Team includes the collection of student’s expressions of interest, staff and student voting, a leadership workshop for shortlisted students, written applications and interviews for the College Captain and Vice Captain roles. With the changes in the senior school structure next year, the Leadership structure will also look a little different. Rather than there being Year Level Leaders, the leadership positions at each year level will be known as House Leaders. The simple change will encourage and provide meaningful opportunities for student leaders to work both vertically in their Houses and horizontally in their year levels throughout 2022. We congratulate the following students appointed to 2022 leadership roles:
College Captains: Lucy El-Hage & Finn Cook.
Vice Captains: Bree Fox & Jamie Lloyd
Egan House Captains: Erin Russell, Eliza Lane, Samara Herpich, Ruben Cottee
Rice House Captains: Jace Nepean, Maggie Moss, Jenna Cahill, Reuben O’Callaghan
McAuely House Captains: Will Gleisner, Curran O’Donnell, Amber Dowd, Leigha Lehmann,
Maguire House Captains: Will Pennington, Jessie Mellblom, Jas Lang, Tamsyn Curran
Congratulations to each of these senior student leaders. Selection and recognition of junior leaders will now follow. On behalf of the College community, I extend our thanks to this group of young people so genuinely interested in the possibility of improving the Emmanuel community and the school experience for all their peers.
Re-Imagined Emmanuel Learning Community
As previously communicated, the 2022 school year will see exciting developments at Emmanuel with the introduction of the 9@RICE program commencing at the Rice Campus and the introduction of a vertical, house based, pastoral structure in the senior school for Years 10-12. These developments are part of the re-imagined Emmanuel learning community that is being created, rolled-out and embedded from 2022. The re-imagined Emmanuel learning community reflects several years of capital works being completed to provide the infrastructure to support teaching and learning at the College. Despite the interruptions that have occurred this year we have been informing families about the changes and providing presentations for students whenever the opportunity to gather has presented itself. At present, students will find visual displays in the Library setting out the structural and geographical changes happening between the end of this year and the start of 2022. I encourage you to ask your children about their understanding of the pending transition, one of the largest structural changes to occur at Emmanuel since 1991. In coming days additional responses to frequently asked questions (FAQs) will be shared with the Emmanuel community. I also encourage you to contact Deputy Principal Michael Wrigley by either phoning the College, 5560 0888, or emailing Michael: mwrigley@emmanuel.vic.edu.au if you have unanswered questions about any of the new directions in 2022.
Opportunites during remote learning
Remote learning has impacted so many extra and co-curricular student experiences, however, a small number of opportunities have continued and played out online. For example, the International Chemistry Quiz was undertaken online and we congratulate the Emmanuel students who took part. Emmanuel College was one of 83 schools Australia-wide to have students compete and we congratulate Ben Pennington of Year 12 who received a distinction grade. We also acknowledge Joshua James, Patrick (Paddy) Dobson and Max Rea who received participation certificates. Meanwhile the following students recently took part in the All Catholic Schools Chess Competition online: Max Rea, Khang Dang, Charlie Clancey, Kuyan Bowden, Reuben Knoll-Miller, Blake Alford, Kristen McKenzie, Edward O’Connor, Isaiah Pickett, Blake Passlow, Jed King, Hamish Heggie, Fionn Lucardie and Don Heenpalla. The competition was quickly followed by the Chess State Finals last Wednesday, again online, and we congratulate participants: Max Rea, Khang Dang, Charlie Clancy, Kuyan Bowden, Reuben Knoll-Miller, Kristen McKenzie, Edward O’Connor, Isaiah Pickett, Blake Passlow and Jed King. The College is immensely proud of Year 11 Jace Nepean’s recent selection for the Australian Physics Olympiad. Jace is one of only 30 Students from across Australia who has been invited and accepted an offer to attend the 2021 Australian Physics Olympiad Summer School. He will participate in a two-week intensive program during January 2022 covering the equivalent of first year University Physics. Jace was selected based on his performance in the Australian Olympiad Examination, a three-hour online exam completed in August. Our best wishes go with Jace when he undertakes this incredible opportunity.
School Supervision
Finally, parents and guardians are asked to note school supervision times from the perspective of child safety. Students should avoid arriving and being onsite prior to 8am. From 8am the McAuley Campus Library is open and students may use the Library for study from this time. General staff supervision onsite commences at 8.30am and concludes at 3.45pm each day. Once again, the McAuley Campus Library is open Monday to Thursday: 8am - 4.45pm and on Fridays: 8am – 4pm.

Congratulations to our Chess Students
All Catholic School's Chess Competition
On Thursday October 14, 10 Emmanuel College Students participated in the all Catholic School's Chess competition. It was an online competition with some students playing from home and others from school. Emmanuel College was placed second at the end of the competition with last year's winners from St Patricks (Ballarat) taking first place for a second time. Mercy Regional was placed third. Other schools from the Diocese were unable to field teams for the competition.
Well done to Max Rea, Khang Dang, Charlie Clancey, Kuyan Bowden, Reuben Knoll-Miller, Kristen McKenzie, Edward O'Connor, Isaiah Pickett, Blake Passlow and Jed King for participating in the competition.
State Finals
On the 20th of October, nine Emmanuel College chess players took part in the State finals. There were over 150 chess players participating in the competition. The competition was based on the Swiss-Ranking system with each player playing nine rounds of chess. Each game was seven minutes with three second increments. There were a total of 20 schools represented in the competition. After nine rounds, Emmanuel College was placed 14th. It proved to be an interesting day of chess and all our chess players did really well and certainly gained good experience throughout the competition. The table below shows the positioning of our players in the State of Victoria. A big congratulations to all of our players. A great team effort. At this stage we have five players going forward to Nationals, which will take place in the last week of November.

Students get creative in remote learning
The past few months have been challenging to say the least in the Technology Area. Without access to Sewing Machines and equipment, classes resorted to being creative in alternate ways during their Remote Learning. Many students embraced these activities with rigour. Knitting, crochet, drawing and designing, fabric dyeing, weaving, mending, altering and upcycling were popular activities. It was described by many students as a calm and relaxing way to learn new skills. Many students sought the guidance of parents or guardians and Youtube Tutorials were more than helpful when learning new skills. We were extremely proud of our students’ resilience during this time and were blown away by the beautiful work that was created. Many students surprised themselves with their newfound skills and abilities. I have no doubt that students will reflect on this time as being an opportunity to appreciate the importance of taking time for themselves and appreciating the time taken to create beautiful hand-made products.
