A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
Term 3 – Not the start we were expecting….
It was great to see our students back at school albeit for a short time. As we pivot and engage in remote learning this week I remind parents that should you have any concerns for your child please email their homeroom teacher and inform them. We also have wellbeing and IT support continuing for students during remote learning and contact emails have been posted on the student bulletin on SIMON and can be accessed by parents through PAM. However, if you are concerned about your child’s safety, and /or you believe your child is at risk, please contact your family GP as soon as possible.
It is best to encourage your child to keep a good routine at home during remote learning and get up in the morning as normal in preparation for a school day, have a healthy breakfast and then sign in for homeroom and normal timetable classes. Making sure children have breaks during the day and time away from the screen as this is important for healthy minds and bodies. We encourage students to exercise and get out for at least a walk at the end of their remote learning school day.
Free Webinar for Parents and Carers – 20 July
Andrew Fuller is a Clinical Psychologist, Family Therapist, Author and Associate of The Brown Collective. This free webinar for parents and carers will focus on ways to alleviate some of the stress of lockdown and home-based education and is being held on Tuesday 20 July at 1pm. See details and bookings here.
Behavioural Tracking System
Our behavioural tracking’s system is simply a recording system we use to encourage positive behaviour outcomes through restorative conversations and support. In most cases students will be aware that they have had a tracking and it is important for parents to have a conversation with your child about behavioural tracking. If there are concerns with the number of tracking’s or behaviours at school, parents will be contacted by the College. If parents have any questions in regards to tracking’s you are invited to contact your child’s homeroom teacher.

Year 7 Painting
The Year 7 first sememster art classes concluded with a painting unit. Students began the process by sketching out and planning what they would like to paint. Then, using a layer of acrylic paint they created a background, working on a large canvas. Adding a second layer of paint, students started to form objects. After this, students were able to start adding elements of tone and texture. Students gained this ability by adding different shades of paint to create a sense of perspective and realism in their work. Finally students used thinner brushes to add the final details to their work. It was a great way to end their Year 7 art journey. All the students enjoyed the creative freedom of painting and have amazing canvases to display at home.

Applied Learning & VCAL News
VCAL students and staff have had a productive and busy first semester this year with many great experiences and opportunities for students to gain industry experience along the way.
The Year 11 team were busy in the O9 café during Term 2 raising funds to put towards a future Year 12 common room/space and have made a nice profit from their efforts over the term.
VCAL Literacy classes have also been getting ‘hands on’ over at One Day Studios with a high profile professional toy maker Cipta Croft-Cusworth from “Good Guys Never Win”. Cipta, along with One Day Studios creative leader Gareth Colliton, helped students bring some of their development of characters to life as action figures.
Our regular Ride2School day celebrations were another success with statistics gathered on Emmanuel College students travel habits and promotion of the benefits of active travel to school. Students organised a barbeque on the day raising hundreds of dollars as part of the school fundraising efforts for Caritas.
Well done to Paige Griffin (Year 11) who took on the challenge of designing and running a songwriting workshop with junior students at The Stage. The Year 12 team took on a range of projects over the semester and successfully organised a range of activities. The eSports team took on the challenge of setting up a League of Legends competition and while faced with many challenges the team managed to run their event, gaining support from local businesses (thanks to Jai at RNG Tabletop Gaming!) while promoting the positive impacts of healthy gaming. Several projects will extend into this semester with a Year 12 morning tea coming up soon and more community projects underway for Terms 3 and 4.
Congratulations to the following VCAL students:
Special congratulations to a number of Emmanuel College VCAL students who have worked hard to secure full time apprenticeships over the course of this year. We are proud of these students efforts to pursue meaningful pathways into employment and ongoing training. This is only made possible by the ongoing support we have from a range of supportive employers who continue to encourage and train our students through workplace industry training opportunities provided through VCAL structured workplace learning and school based apprenticeships. Equally, the effort by students to work hard in attaining skills and knowledge to prepare them for the world of work is apparent in the successful attainment of positions in these supportive companies and local businesses.

We thank all our local employers who continue to support students in their aspirations to explore career pathways in local industries through our VCAL and other learning programs. We will be featuring these employers in the coming weeks in our newsletter and encourage you to support these local businesses that provide our students with such wonderful opportunities.
Education reform in Vocational and Applied Learning
The recent review and discussion papers released via the Engage Vic website provide an opportunity for students, parents, school staff and the community to be a part of the consultation process the Department of Education is leading. I encourage you to click onto the survey link to access the discussion papers and share your feedback via the survey from Engage Vic. Further information about the review and future changes to qualifications for senior students is available in the newsletter and VCAA website here.

Senior Secondary Certificate Reform
Victoria is transforming the delivery of senior secondary education with the introduction of a single senior secondary certificate that will offer greater access to quality vocational and applied learning pathways for all students.
Next year students will still be able to enrol in either the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) or the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). The following year, in 2023, VCAL students will be enrolled in the new VCE Vocational Specialisation or the new foundation pathways certificate which will be introduced to replace Foundation VCAL. See the attached document for a complete overview.
Year 8 and 9 Japanese
In the last week of Semester 1, in Year 8 and Year 9 Japanese class, we incorporated some Japanese cuisine into our lesson to finish our Japanese food unit. Year 8 had a chance to taste some sushi rolls from Shiraya Sushi and Deli and Year 9 Japanese students tried out making their own sushi rolls.
They have been learning expressions used while eating, and how to use chopsticks properly. Students have enjoyed learning by eating, and Japanese food culture. Big thanks to Languages Trainee Sarasa Deguchi for her help, too.

Walk, Don't Run!
Emmanuel College supports a community campaign called “Walk, Don’t Run” whose goal is to have a 40 km school zone installed on Raglan Parade from King Street to Hopetoun Road in Warrnambool.
A reduced speed zone in this area would greatly benefit Emmanuel College students who regularly walk across the Highway, especially at the Ardlie Street intersection. Many students cross here not only to get to and from school but also to attend after school activities.
This intersection is a particularly high traffic zone at both the start and the end of the school day and many “near miss” incidents have been witnessed, with students risking racing across the oncoming traffic in the treacherous zone.
Mayor Vicki Jellie and MP Roma Britnell are supporting the push for a reduced speed here too.
We ask parents and guardians to show their support by joining the WALK DONT RUN Facebook page group here and by signing the community petition here to be submitted to VicRoads and the WCC, asking for a 40km zone to be installed in this high risk area.

2022 VET Delivered to Secondary Schools Course Guide
South West TAFE have recently launched the 2022 VET Delivered to Secondary Schools Guide which outlines the different programs that students can undertake as part of their VCE or VCAL program. These will be delivered to your schools VET Coordinator or can be picked up from any of South West TAFE campuses.
Next year there are 12 areas to choose from, with the addition of Tourism and Early Childhood Education and Care - so there are plenty of options for students.
We encourage students to review the guide, talk with their career teachers and consider VET for their subject selections in 2022.

Community Development Fund 2021
Warrnambool City Council is inviting Warrnambool not-for-profit clubs and organisations to apply for support through the annual Community Development Fund (CDF).
The popular funding program supports sporting, recreational, environmental, cultural activities and community events to deliver health and wellbeing outcomes for Warrnambool residents, contributing to the liveability of the city.
Warrnambool Mayor Cr Vicki Jellie encouraged all eligible clubs and groups to apply. “This is a great opportunity for clubs to kick-start a project, complete a project or stage an event,” Cr Jellie said. “We know that clubs and groups were hit hard by COVID. It affected fundraising, activities and made attracting and retaining members difficult. A CDF grant can go a long way to helping out volunteer-driven organisations."
Council has retained changes to the funding guidelines introduced last year to acknowledge the impact of COVID-19.
