Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
It is wonderful to see colourful ties and socks being worn by staff and students today as we celebrate Diversity Day, a day that celebrates difference. Diversity is a ‘fact’ of life while inclusion is the ‘act’ that enriches us and our community. Historically the Emmanuel school community has been fairly monocultural, attributable largely to the Anglo-Celtic origins of the region. Today, our school is more diverse than you may think with students and staff from dozens of ethnic backgrounds, albeit in small numbers and a range of religious affiliations. While Emmanuel is a Catholic school the College is open to all families seeking a Catholic education for their children. At present Emmanuel College hosts children with Lutheran, Orthodox, Jewish, Hindu, Moslem, Buddhist and other Christian faiths. Our school community is further enriched by students who have an indigenous background, predominantly the Peek Whurrong of the Gunditjamara – Maar people, who continue one of the oldest living cultures in our nation. Furthermore, our school comprises an array of families including nuclear families, single parent and blended families and more. In other words, Diversity Day celebrates the richness our community experiences from the inclusion of individuals with different ethnic backgrounds, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background, age, caring responsibilities, cultural backgrounds, disability status, gender, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, gender identity and socio-economic backgrounds. It may be coincidental, but certainly timely, that the gospel reading from Mark and the gospel acclamation at yesterday’s mass, instructed Jesus’ followers to “proclaim the Good News to all creation.” There were no exceptions, no exclusions! The celebration of Diversity Day in our school today proclaims the good news that we all belong to God’s kingdom. Inclusion in our school community is achieved when a diversity of people feel they are:
- Respected for who they are and able to be themselves;
- Connected to their peers and colleagues and feel they belong;
- Contributing their perspectives and talents to the community; and
- Progressing in their education and/or career at work with equal access to opportunities and resources;
Thank you to the Emmanuel staff and students who communicated diversity and inclusion through their words and actions and their colourful dress today.
Social Media Dangers
Parents and guardians will be aware of social media dangers their children may encounter while online. I want to draw your attention to an article in the AGE newspaper highlighting a current issue with Snapchat. Current research from the University of NSW reveals incidents of online grooming by sexual predators using Snapchat is common and has increased since COVID lockdown, which saw people spend more time online. If you wish to view the article please go to the Sunday 16 May edition of the AGE and search for the article: “Boy aged 10 found and groomed within days is one of many” by Wendy Tuohy. NAPLAN
Congratulations to our Year seven and nine students who completed NAPLAN tests last week with minimal fuss. I acknowledge College coordinators Assistant Principal Justin Houlihan and Teaching & Learning Leaders Simone Rolfe and Amanda McCarten. Together they ensured all tests were completed online in a timely fashion and we look forward to receiving the outcomes that assist us to provide for student learning. Arrangements are in place for students who were absent to complete missed tests today and tomorrow
Congratulations
Congratulations to the eight Emmanuel teachers who completed the Master of Education course through the University of South Australia and attended their graduation ceremony last week. It is a huge commitment to work full time and to dedicate time to studying at Masters level. The College congratulates Megan Davies, Simone Rolfe Tamara Hulands, Natasha Cummings, Shane Smith, Jason Dart, Sean Fitzgibbon and Ben Woonton.
Congratulations to the Emmanuel students who took part in the WD Cross Country races last week in terrible weather conditions. Their participation displays true grit and their success indicates good preparation and dedication. Well done to all our runners. There were some amazing individual performances with a number of students finishing in the top 15 including the following age champions:
- 13 years: Tom Foster and Olivia Lenehan
- 14 years: Emily Benson
- 15 years: Jack McNeil and Abbey Titmus
- 16 years: Darcy Bridgewater
- Senior Boys: Josh Bail
Catholic Education Week
Next week we celebrate Catholic Education Week starting with the official reopening and blessing of the revitalized McAuley Campus Library on Monday. Fr. John Fitzgerald and Fr. Lawrence O’Toole who recently concluded their roles as College Governors have accepted our invitation to bless and reopen this exciting new space.
Year 7 2022
Finally, the offers of 2022 Year seven enrolment were mailed last week and the offers need to be accepted by Friday 28 May to confirm and secure a place for next year. With over 240 applications received there was significant pressure for the available places and enrolments that are not accepted and confirmed by May 28 will be made available to families who are waiting for second round offers. All enrolment enquires may be addressed to College Registrar, Jo-Anne Nelson: jnelson@emmanuel.vic.edu.au
Enjoy the week ahead in all its diversity.
Alleluia, Alleluia. Go and teach all people my gospel.
I am with you always, until the end of time. Alleluia. (Mt. 28: 19, 20)
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.

A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
If unwell, please stay at home
A timely reminder with the cold weather well and truly upon us for those in our school community to be mindful of maintaining good hand hygiene. At this time of the year, we see an increase in coughs and colds and it is best for all in our community, if a student is unwell, they stay at home. This ensures a speedy recovery for the individual and assist in stopping the spread of coughs, colds and flu within our school community.
Respectful Relationships@Emmanuel
On Monday May 17 as a school community, we celebrated our diversity by wearing a colourful tie and crazy socks. The colourful tie and socks represent the fact that we are all different and as part of respectful relationships we embrace all in our community and create an inclusive environment for all. Our differences make us unique and special creating a community of wonderful people.
“Diversity is a fact, inclusion is an act”
As part of continuing to ensure we have an inclusive community at Emmanuel College, all staff on Tuesday May 11 listened to a presentation from Sparklez Hernan and Lyn Eales from Brophy Family and Youth Services – SAFE in the south west. They shared with us a broad overview of gender and sexual diversity, LGBTIQ+ in schools and organisations, understanding and adapting to emerging language and information to raise awareness of using inclusive language.

Year 12 students go back to where it all began
The Year 12 cohort went to Southcombe Lodge, Port Fairy in the first week of May for their retreat experience. The place holds sentimental value for the group as it is where they began their Emmanuel journey with their Year 7 camp in 2016.
Over the course of the day and night, students had time to reflect on their time together as a year level and learn some valuable skills to help them navigate their final year of schooling. They were fortunate enough to have some Emmanuel alumni attend the retreat and pass on some wisdom about their journey post-secondary education. Finally, in true camping fashion, the students had a board games/dress up evening where they were encouraged to spend some time with their classmates having fun.
I would like to thank all the students for how well they engaged in the retreat experience. I would also like to pass on my thanks to the staff who attended retreat and made the experience possible.

A Whole New World - Parent Information Session
Fit4Life Parent Session – Sonya Karras “A Whole New World”
Sonya Karras will provide a special presentation for parents/guardians on guiding teenagers through challenges that may arise during partying and socialising.
We extend an invitation to parents of Year 10-12 students to attend the “Whole New World” information session presented at the College on Wednesday 26 May at 7.00 pm in The STAGE.
Partying, and particularly nightclubbing, can strike fear in any parent. Drugs, alcohol, and binge drinking are scary topics to talk to our children about – so how do you do it in a way that doesn’t make them say “whatever Mum – what would you know?”
Sonya Karras provides parents with ways to communicate with their children on a range of issues around safe partying. Sonya’s background in the hospitality industry and years working with young people has enabled her to develop a one of a kind program.
The Whole New World information session will finish at approximately 8.30 pm and cover:
- The inside info on partying
- Ways parents can be involved in making sure their children party safely
- Drugs
- Alcohol
- Safe parties at home
- Staying informed and up to date
- Resources for further information
Please respond to the Operoo notification to confirm if you can attend this important information session.

University of Melbourne School Mathematic Competition
On Wednesday May 5, fourteen Emmanuel College students took part in the University of Melbourne School Mathematical Competition. The competition is designed to enable mathematical insight and ingenuity, rather than efficiency in tackling routine examples. Split into Junior (Yr. 7-8), Intermediate (Yr. 9-10) and Senior (Yr. 11-12) sections, students had two or three hours to complete six questions.
It was a fantastic opportunity allowing the students to apply their mathematical understanding and develop their problem-solving strategies to answer a range of different problems.
Congratulations to the following students:
Year 7: Ella Jarrold, Sam Anderson, Lachlan Huntly
Year 8: Tyson James, Matilda Woodward, Abigail Langley, Eadie Gleeson, Max Collins
Year 9: Matthew Gome, Xavier Gercovich, Jeffrey Collins
Year 11: William Gleisner, William Pennington, Jace Nepean
Here is a question from the Junior paper……
Now that’s cricket. As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic and the three-month Greater Melbourne lockdown, fewer people are currently physicially active than before the pandemic struck. A special task-force of the state government led by Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence, is currently looking at initiatives to get the population active again on the sporting field. One idea of the task-force aimed at boosting the number of Year 7 and 8 students playing cricket is to make the game more exciting by changing the oval shape of the field to an irregular pentagon:
with dimensions measured in metres. What is the total area of the proposed new playing field?
Year 10 Maths - Subject Selection for Semester Two
In the coming weeks Year 10 students will be having discussions with their Maths teachers regarding their pathways for Semester Two.
Semester Two will see classes streamed into two pathways ‘Methods Prep’ and ‘General Prep’. The Methods Prep class will focus on preparing students for Mathematical Methods and includes some additional units from the 10A curriculum. Students will be required to solve problems with and without the use of their Ti-Nspire calculator and summary book. The General Prep class will focus on preparing students for General/Further Mathematics. Here the students will be allowed the use of their Ti-Nspire calculator and summary book throughout each unit.
It is important students use their ‘career interviews’ to gain an understanding of the maths required for their future pathways. For example, ‘Is Mathematical Methods a prerequisite or a bonus subject for the course I wish to apply for at University?’. If this is the case then the Methods Prep pathway would be encouraged. If students are still unsure, they should speak with their teachers or simply email David Gladman for clarification.
After-School Maths Help
If you require assistance with your Mathematics, make the most of the After-school Maths Help sessions.
McAuley Campus Sessions will run in the Library on Monday and Wednesday nights from 3.30 - 4.30pm. Staff will be positioned around the collaborative table to assist students. Please note that sessions will be cancelled in the event of staff meetings
Rice Campus Sessions will run throughout the week as staff visit Study Hall, while Mr McCluskey will run a session in R3 on Thursday afternoons from 3.30 – 4.30pm.

Year 8 Materials Design
During Term 1 Miss Hill’s Year 8 Materials Design class students completed the Tool Box Task. Students learnt from class demonstrations and then students worked really well independently. Students were excellent at quickly picking up many skills and teaching each other how to use tools and machinery down in the Industrial Skills Centre. Students completed the design process and most students finished with a sticker design to enhance their final Tool Box Design. Students worked really well during this time and these photos will show their great efforts. Well done!
Inter-House Chess Competition
The Inter-House chess competition has taken off very well. Recesses and Lunch times have been busy as competitors within House groups have been battling it out for the first five positions. This week the playouts between Egan and McAuley and Maguire and Rice will take place with the finals on Thursday and Friday. Who are the champions going to be for this term’s Inter-house competition? Why not come along next week and support your House?
We wish all the teams the best of luck.

Catching up with the boys of CBC
It was great to see CBC Boys representing six decades of alumni come together in the Emmanuel Centre last Monday to reconnect and reminisce at this year’s CBC Catch-Up.
Many of the boys who came along, had also been in attendance at the End of an Era celebrations in 1990 when the boys farewelled CBC Warrnambool and marked the beginning of the Emmanuel College journey.
In addition to commemorating the 30-year anniversary, the event marked a return to normal following the lockdowns of 2020. We were particularly pleased to welcome back Brian Kermond, who attended CBC during the 40s, and was happy to make the round trip from Melbourne on the night. Amazing effort from one of our oldest alumni!
Guest speakers Shaun, Patrick, Simon, Adam and Paul Ryan interviewed by Greg Kelson, kept the boys entertained with stories of their school years and the careers that followed for each of them.
We were also pleased to welcome to the event four previous Inspiring Alumni inductees - David Atkinson, Fr Barry Ryan, Laurie Gleeson and of course, guest speaker Shaun Ryan.

Fantastic to see all the boys from across the generations of CBC coming along. We’ll see you all again next year on May 2!

Library and Information Week 2021
The theme for this year for Library and Information Week is:
ADVENTURES IN SPACE AND TIME
The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) says:
Libraries and information services are places of adventure. People who connect with them take a journey, whether it's in search of specific information, serendipitous browsing through vast collections, or coming together with others to learn something new.
They can be an adventures in space, from sending actual books to a space station and hearing an astronaut read to over a million children in Australia, to exploring and meeting in new, innovative and inspiring building spaces and learning about other places around the world (and beyond). They alre also online spaces , where we can interact virtually to stay connected to information and each other at times when we need to stay physically distant.
They can also be adventures in time, where we revisit the past, connecting with stories and memories of those who came before us, or imagine the future, exploring new ideas for making a better society to live in, creating new knowledge for future generations, and making plans for your own personal or professional future.
Emmanuel College will celebrate Library and Information Week from May 17-23.
There will be competitions for Home Rooms and individual entry competitions including Lego and Uno competitions.
On Wednesday some classes will take part in National Simultaneous Storytime.
On one day of the year, libraries all over Australia read one book together with over a million children combined. This year, that book is Give me some Space! which ALIA have sent on a rocket to space, and will be read in a special event from the International Space Station. To learn more about this event, see the National Simultaneous Storytime page, and follow the #NSS2021 hashtag to see how libraries around Australia are celebrating.
Library and Information Week gives us an opportunity to celebrate what Libraries offer: spaces to learn, resources to borrow, books to read, a place to learn from others.
National Sorry Day
National Sorry Day is a day to remember and acknowledge the Stolen Generations and to reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and our nation. Warrnambool City Council has invited the community to make handcrafted purple flowers to contribute to a commemorative display for National Sorry Day, to acknowledge and show our solidarity to the Stolen Generations. In the McAuley Library at Recess and Lunchtimes over the last couple of weeks, students have helped make some of these flowers. These flowers will be displayed at the Warrnambool Library throughout Reconciliation Week, May 26 to June 3. We thank the students for joining in this community event.
