Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
On behalf of the College community, I acknowledge the mothers and the carers within our community and recognize their commitment to loving and caring for their immediate and their extended family members. We celebrate with you this approaching Mother’s Day Sunday 9 May.
Now into the third week of term two there is of course lots happening. Thank you to the many families who attended Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences recently taking advantage of the opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and gain insights into their progress. Thank you to those staff and students who participated in multiple local sporting competitions with some moving through to subsequent rounds including the State final of Volleyball. Thank you to the College Wellbeing Team whose regular publication, “Words for Wellbeing”, continue to provide students and families with a valuable resource including information, self-help strategies and go-to resources. The latest edition is available here
Thanks to our Board of Management and College Governors
A journey of discernment and transition lasting close to three years culminated last week when an historic final meeting of the Emmanuel College Board of Management and College Governors was conducted. One of the final transition responsibilities for the Governors and the Board members was to cancel the incorporation of Emmanuel College with legal oversight for the College having successfully been handed to Mercy Education Ltd. (MEL). The College is now simply named Emmanuel College Warrnambool and it will continue to thrive and grow under this name.
Pictured below are College Governors Sr. Eileen-Ann Daffy, Sr. Marie Davey, Fr. Lawrie O’Toole, Fr. John Fitzgerald and College Board members Karen Jongebloed (retired), Maree Lane (Chair) Michael Klem (Finance Committee) Chris Steel (Building & Facilities Committee) Veronica Hughson, Jo McCormack, Brendan Howard (St. Joseph’s Parish), Andrew Watson (Catholic Education Ballarat representative) Stephen Kerr (Business Manager) and Peter Morgan (Principal). The occasion was the last time the Governors will meet with the Board, which this year has become the Emmanuel College Warrnambool Advisory Council tasked with supporting myself as Principal to further develop a dynamic Catholic learning community for our region.
As a parting gesture, the Governors gifted the College a new chalice and patten for College masses. Despite the many school liturgies celebrated over the last 30 years, the College does not have a complete set of mass items making the gift both appropriate and special.
It is 30 years this year since Emmanuel College was formed from its predecessor schools St. Ann’s and CBC, and the change in governance comes at a time when the College is firmly established and thriving. Tribute is paid to the women and men who served this school community either as Board members or Governors, accepting responsibility for the legal and ethical conduct of the College and giving their time, expertise and wisdom to enable the College to overcome numerous obstacles and to flourish. All schools stand on the shoulders of those who came before and Emmanuel is no different. Without their commitment and energy for providing Catholic secondary education in Warrnambool, Emmanuel College would not be in the position of strength it holds today with a clear and exciting vision for the future.
Rostrum Voice of Youth
Congratulations to the four Emmanuel senior students who took part in the Rostrum Voice of Youth public Speaking Competition over the weekend. On Saturday afternoon Louise Tamer, Ben Pennington, Maxwell Rea and Oliver Hammond participated in the senior division with Ben and Louise moving through to the semi-finals. Ben was runner up for our region while Louise was awarded regional winner. Louise will be competing in the State Finals on Sunday 20 June in Melbourne and we wish her success and a joyful experience.
CBC Catch Up
Tonight, we welcome alumni of Christian Brother’s College, gathering in the Emmanuel Centre for their third annual “CBC Catch Up”. The catchup of former CBC students is held in the same week as the feast day (May 5) of Edmund Rice, the Irish founder of the Brothers. There will be lots of laughter and storytelling and I wish all involved an enjoyable evening and acknowledge Alumni Coordinator, Candice Hampstead’s, coordination of the event.
Student Free Day - Friday
A reminder this Friday is a student free day while the staff of Emmanuel College and Mercy Regional College Camperdown combine for a professional development day facilitated by Ian Luscombe with a focus on positive behaviour management.
NAPLAN Testing
Looking ahead to next week students in Years seven and nine will be completing NAPLAN testing on-line. The College regards NAPLAN testing as one of many sources of valuable data that provides teachers and support staff with a picture of student abilities including their strengths and gaps. The data does not define an individual but it is a helpful tool to assist teachers to complete their work effectively which is why we expect students to approach the tests calmly and sensibly.
Congratulations
Next week the eight Emmanuel teachers who completed the Master of Education course at the University of South Australia will be rewarded with their graduation ceremony. It is a huge commitment to work full time and to dedicate time to studying at the Masters level. The College congratulates Megan Davies, Natasha Cummings, Shane Smith, Ben Woonton, Jason Dart, Simone Rolfe, Sean Fitzgibbon and Tamara Hulands and I look forward to sharing a photo in our next newsletter of their big day.
May you enjoy the public holiday this Thursday and may you enjoy Mother’s Day next Sunday even more! We pray for all mothers:
We lift up all our mothers today and
thank them for their guidance and love.
We ask God to bless them
With God’s special love, today and always.
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.

A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
Wellbeing check-in - Skodel
The students have started Term two well and we are seeing students adjusting to a more post-covid normal routine. We work hard to support the wellbeing of students through our Fit4life framework and one component is student check-in. Our students have the opportunity to use a wellbeing platform called Skodel for a student wellbeing check-in online each Thursday morning in week B, during extended homeroom time. This allows homeroom teachers to see how students in their homeroom are tracking. We encourage all students to use this check-in system.
Concern in the rise in young people experimenting with e-cigarettes
Positive Behaviour management is something as a school community we use on a daily basis, along with restorative practice. We work hard to educate the whole being and spend time working through different situations that may arise. We have seen an increase across society in the use of e-cigarettes and as such we have responded to this through education. Year 9-12 students have or will be having a short session on the harmful risks involved in vaping. To support our work at school we also ask parents to have a conversation about e-cigarettes with your children.
It is illegal to sell an e-cigarette to people under the age of 18 years. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine and even the flavoured types that young people believe do not contain nicotine in fact have been found to contain nicotinet. Research conducted in America found that 99% of e-cigarettes do contain nicotine and that companies just do not put it on packaging. We place a high priority on our students making good healthy choices and as such vaping is strictly prohibited at school, on buses, on camps etc and serious consequences are enforced should a student be in breach of this rule.
For information on vaping I would encourage parents to read information shared in our most recent Words for Wellbeing newsletter. This is also shared with our students each fortnight with valuable information about their health and wellbeing.
Bus Behaviour
We expect a high standard of behaviour on school buses and below is a link to our management of bus behaviour. Please be aware that if there are ongoing issues on the bus, your child may have the privilege to take the bus to school taken away for a period of time and parents would have to make alternative arrangements. This is also used in conjunction with our behaviour management policy.
Uniform expectations
Uniform is being worn reasonably well by our students however we have seen a number of students in Year 9 & 10 wearing PE uniform to school. This is not permitted and students will be tracked. Please see below our procedures for uniform breaches. If there are ongoing uniform breaches students will be required to attend an after school uniform behaviour reflection. This includes repeated jewellery breaches, as per a letter sent home to all parents last term, please be aware that the wearing of nose piercing is not permitted at Emmanuel and if a student has a nose piercing, they are required to wear a clear retainer or cover it up.
If parents can support our work in the space with students by ensuring your child is in correct uniform which includes wearing a blazer to and from school it will assist our management of this aspect greatly.

Amelia Bell - Telling The Story Of Community
Year 11 student Amelia Bell is making a name for herself in the local art scene with her beautiful paintings that tell stories of family, community and the Gunditjmara – Maar land we live on.
Amelia was commissioned by Principal Peter Morgan to design window decals for the new Emmanuel College Library at the McAuley Campus and these will also be used on the windows that will eventually replace classroom corridor walls.
Amelia explained that her design for the window decals was a departure from her usual medium of paint. “This was my first digital artwork,” said Amelia and this is definitely a path I would like to explore further.”
“The larger circles in the design, says Amelia, “represent groups of people coming together in a safe space where everyone is free to learn and the smaller circles represent the individuals that make up our College community.”
Amelia’s interest in art began to develop in Year 7 and Dad, Shane along with her grandmother have been her main storytelling mentors.
Amelia has received several commissions and sold paintings to local restaurants along with having works in the Provincial in Ballarat. Exhibiting a special collection of her work (entitled The Formation of Gunditjamara Country) as part of the Port Fairy Winter Weekends has been a highlight, with all works selling. A short video made by Winter Weekends about Amelia and her art for this event attracted much attention.
Promoting her artwork through social media, including Facebook and Instagram, Amelia is keen to build a website in future.
Interestingly, Amelia does not study visual arts at school as she wants to keep her art as a form of escapism. “Creating art makes me feel calm and I think it’s good for mental health. Right now, it’s something I want to keep for myself as an interest.”
We congratulate Amelia on her design and look forward to seeing more work by this emerging young artist as she grows and explores her art and culture.

Year 8 Tower Hill Excursion
Today the Year 8 students went on an excursion to Tower Hill, to gather information and prepare for our Humanities assessment task. It was a cloudy, windy day but we braved the cold and made our way down on buses.
When we arrived at Tower Hill, we split into class groups and sat down together in a circle. Prior to arriving we received booklets where we would collect the information that we needed. There were four rotations, so two classes would share an activity.
The first activity my group did was the sand ring session with Paul. Paul talked to us about Indigenous use of the region, management, bush food and Indigenous culture. Then, we got to have a turn at throwing the boomerangs, which was a great experience.
Our second rotation was the peak climb with John. This activity included a steep walk up to a viewing platform, where John shared some information about quarries and rocks.
The next activity was board-work with Levi. Levi shared facts about the plants and what they are used for.
Finally our last rotation was a talk from Rick and another walk to the wetlands. Overall it was a great day, thanks to the teachers who were involved and the experts at Tower Hill.

Rostrum Voice of Youth
On Saturday afternoon, Ben Pennington, Maxwell Rea, Oliver Hammond and Louise Tamer participated in the Senior's Division of Rostrum Voice of Youth. It was a great afternoon.
Ben and Louise made it through to the semifinals. Ben received runners up for the region and Louise was awarded winner for the region. Louise will be competing in the State Finals on Sunday 20th June in Melbourne. Well done to those students involved.

English Coordinator
Western District Volleyball
Emmanuel College had 48 students from Years 9 to 12 compete in the Warrnambool and District division of the School Sports Victoria volleyball competition on Thursday 22nd April. All students participated well throughout the day and should be commended on their efforts and behaviour whilst representing the school.
Our intermediate teams performed exceptionally well, with two teams gaining entry to the Greater Western Region competition to be held on Tuesday 27th April. One of the two Emmanuel intermediate boys teams narrowly made it through to the next round after winning 5 of their six games. It was a narrow victory because a Warrnambool College team had also won 5 games, with the Emmanuel team succeeding through a higher win/loss percentage.
The intermediate girls' competition was also very close. The competition's final match happened to be a contest between the two highest-performing teams from earlier games, both representing Emmanuel College.
Congratulations to the students listed below who will be representing Emmanuel College at the next level of competition. These are fantastic results, and all students should be proud of their efforts.

Term 2 in the new Awakenings
Year 7 ‘Fight for Fair’ Unit - Investigating Christians who in faith describe God as a Trinity of persons, are challenged to find ways of respectful engagement with those of other faith traditions and worldviews in ways that promote the common good for all. They will also examine how, informed by Catholic Social Teaching, the Christian life is located in a community of dialogue and cooperation.
Year 8 ‘Living a Sacramental Life’ Unit - Investigating how Christian communities have formed through time, and how their identity and offering of praise to God has been expressed through prayer, liturgy and sacraments. Inquiry into the Sacrament and how each has its own history, symbols and rituals reflecting local customs. Examination of the Early Church (Jews and Gentiles) and how they were Inspired by the Holy Spirit, and responded to Jesus’ call to promote the Reign of God will also happen.
Year 9 ‘# Celebrations' Unit - For Catholics, Eucharistic celebrations inform everyday life. Students will investigate how through these celebrations, Christ is made present in a particular way, enabling the work of faithful people to shape the world in ways informed by God’s dream for the world. They will also engage with the understanding that for the Christian, the resurrection of Jesus the Christ is the central message of the Good News of salvation. Christ’s message of salvation is one of hope, liberation, new life, and victory through death.
Year 10 VCE Religion & Society Unit 1 - Area of Study Two: Students will be able to discuss the changing roles and influence of religion in society. They will investigate how society and religion influence each other, and the roles of religion in society. They consider the factors that influence these roles and the effect that developments in society might have on religion. Over time, religious traditions have encountered challenging philosophical and spiritual movements, political regimes, legal structures, scientific ideas, colonisation, national myths, globalisation, secularisation, technological developments and historical events and responded to them.
Year 11 VCE Religion & Society Unit 2 - Area of Study Two: Students will be able to explain how ethical perspectives and moral judgments are formed within at least two religious traditions, in societies in which multiple worldviews coexist. They also explore the philosophical traditions which have contributed to each religion’s understanding of ethics. Certain authorities, values, norms, ideas, and ethical principles inform broad ethical perspectives and in turn moral judgments within religious and philosophical traditions.
Year 12 Search For Meaning Unit (School-based) - Unit 2: “Filthy Rich and Homeless”
Theme: Preferential option for the poor. Students explore how the Church’s Catholic social teaching finds its source in Sacred Scripture in relation to the poor. They explore what Jesus said and did in relation to the poor, women and outcasts, gentiles, Samaritans and sinners – to the vulnerable and marginalised of society. They investigate the Laudato Si’ and see how it speaks to our need to enter into dialogue with each other, share our resources and be responsible stewards of creation. They investigate how we can use the key principles of Catholic Social teaching to guide our way for all justice work and investigate God’s dream for a just world reflecting on ways they can follow Jesus’ example in caring for the poor.
Students in all Religion classes are encouraged to participate in class activities and discussions, utilise their Journals for reflections, have a voice and justify viewpoints, tolerate and be respectful of viewpoints other than their own, have an open mindset and bring a positive attitude to class.
Students often have many questions they may wish to ask about after their Religion class or conversations about what they are learning. These are great opportunities to talk together as a family. Simple prompts to start discussion may be: Was there anything that surprised you in your Religion class this week? What questions did the lesson raise for you? What was affirming for you from what you learnt in RE?

Religious Education Coordinator
Year 11 Outdoor Ed Camp
The two Unit 1 Outdoor end Environmental Studies (OES) classes took part in an overnight camp in the Great Otway National Park on Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th April. The camp’s focus is to link practical experiences to the theoretical component of Unit 1 study, which includes topics such as; safe participation in outdoor experiences, motivations for outdoor experiences, and outdoor environments.
A range of activities was included for the 27 students to participate in, including the Otway Fly Zipline tour, mountain biking through the Yaugher Trails Network near Forrest, and a 19km hike from Marengo to Blanket Bay.
Students learned about the highly evolved Mountain Ash trees that grow in the Great Otway National Park and the long-term impacts of logging and land clearing in the area while on the zipline tour. The longest section of zipline was 120 metres long, with the highest point reaching 35 metres.
The students gained a great appreciation for the environment around Forrest with their mountain biking session; in OES, this is known as experiential learning. The skills of our participants were tested, with some participants having an encounter with the environment a little closer than expected; ask our trainee Conor Cook for more details.
The hike required students to walk through four different types of environments, including coastal/marine, heathland, rainforest and dry forest. Walking through these areas to personally experience the change in flora, soil types, and exposure to the elements was one focus of the hike. Another priority was to feel a sense of achievement for walking such a long distance in what turned out to be quite damp and muddy conditions.
Thanks to the students for their participation in the experience; our trainees, Conor Cook and Louis O’Callaghan, for accompanying us and assisting along the way; Mr Stephen ‘Jaffa’ Williams for his assistance in preparing for the trip and Mr Justin Houlihan for stepping in at the last moment as another staff member on the trip.

Lego Competition and a look at our new library
Lunchtime Lego Competition
For the last two Fridays there has been a Lego competition held in the McAuley Library at Lunchtime. Many students are keen to take the two minute challenge to make a variety of items including hats, books and chairs. With the Lego Masters program on television, this has proved very popular.
Book Voucher Prizes
Three Year 7 students were the lucky winners of book vouchers. Bailey B and Hayden B were the first to visit the Library when we reopened after renovations and expansion. Layla K was the first to borrow a book on the opening day. Congratulations to these students.
Genres
When doing the renovations to the Library, the Library Staff have taken the opportunity to change how the books are displayed and stored on the bookshelves. The fiction books are sorted into the following ‘Tenancies’:
Adventure and Animals
Classics
Fantasy and Dystopian (includes Ghost, Gothic, Horror, Science Fiction, Steampunk, Supernatural, Time Travel, Utopian)
Relationships (includes Family, Friendship, Love, Teenage)
History and War (includes Westerns)
Humour (includes Comedy)
Mystery and Crime (includes Spy, Suspense)
School and Sport (includes Diary)
Series
Quick Reads
Other sections in the Library include Graphic Novels, Real Life, Picture Books, Magazines and Non Fiction books.
Each shelf is clearly labelled with the appropriate signage. Students can do a search on the Library home page (via SIMON) to see which books they would like to read and where these books are located in the Library.
Library
The redevelopment of the Library gave us the opportunity to update the Library furniture and shelving to create good working spaces, where students and staff can collaborate, where they can work independently or find a space for leisure activities eg playing cards, reading magazines.

Students particpate in Surf Lifesaving Competitions
Congratulations to all Emmanuel students representing the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club at recent Nippers and Open State Champs as well as a few students travelling to the Sunshine Coast to compete at the Aussies.
As part of the pathway to becoming a volunteer life saver, the Nipper Sports program culminates in the annual Life Saving Victoria Championships. Year 7 student Riley Shiell won gold and is the State Champion in Beach Flags for the third year in a row.
A very difficult event to win, three years in a row is a testament to his hard work and dedication to training.
On his way to winning gold this year, Riley broke his hand in a heat. He managed to keep competing and eventually made it through several more heats to the final to then win.
