Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
Welcome to term two. If you were able to take a break either over Easter or the school holidays I hope it was both restful and rewarding for you and your family. Term two is an important time for students to consolidate their learning and to prepare to demonstrate their learning through semester assessments. Generally, there are fewer disruptions to learning in term two making it an opportunity for teachers and students to work together to maximise the learning outcome for students. As the term begins, I welcome Sian Pretty, Emily Porra and Gerard Bourke assisting us to cover teachers on leave this term. A reminder that Friday 7 May is a student free day when staff will be undertaking professional learning.
Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences
The second round of Parent/Student/Teacher conferences are tomorrow evening from 4-8pm. I encourage you to take this opportunity to make contact with your children’s teachers to identify any concerns and to celebrate achievements. Bookings for conferences will close at 6pm today. The conferences will be held in the Emmanuel Centre. You are also welcome to visit and view the recently refurbished Library open from 3.30 until 6.30pm tomorrow evening. The Library is where we conduct Study Hall which has become an increasingly popular way for students to complete their homework and access teacher guidance in a safe comfortable environment. Study Hall helps to build good study habits, especially the idea of completing homework early and not leaving it until later at night when the brain and the body is physically and mentally tired.
ANZAC Day
This Friday staff and students will stop classes just prior to recess to remember ANZAC day 2021. A short service will be read over the PA remembering those who died during the wars in which Australia has participated since 1914. Wreaths will be placed here at school and at the Warrnambool War Memorial on behalf of the Emmanuel College community.
Resurrection
In our haste to finish term one it was easy to lose sight that we were heading straight into Easter. At the core of the Easter story is the Resurrection. A good way to view the Resurrection is as a symbol of our capacity for transformation. Whether it is a personal circumstance that immobilizes us, a social evil that confronts us or a virus that has locked us away from each other for too long, if we say we believe in the Resurrection, it means we are choosing to be Resurrection people, people who are working for the possibility of transformed lives and transformed attitudes and transformed societies. The light of Easter extinguishes darkness and exposes us to the light of peace and hope and transformation, the light of the Resurrection. (with thanks to Fr. Bob, St. Therese Parish Torquay).
St. Joseph: Pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and Edmund Rice guide us in all that we do. Amen.
I wish you and your children a happy and successful term two.
Mr Peter Morgan

Year 7 2022 - Enrolment Applications Close April 30
McAuley Library open to view
At Emmanuel College we are lucky to have a number of opportunities to share a love of reading.
We have a Student Book Club and a Parent/Guardian Book Club. Each of these meets a couple of times a Term. If you are interested in being involved in either of these please email msinnott@emmanuel.vic.edu.au
McAuley Library Open To View on Tuesday April 20
The McAuley Library will remain open later on Tuesday April 20 to allow families attending the Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences in The Emmanuel Centre, time to come and view the newly refurbished and expanded Library. Families are welcome to visit anytime from 3.30-6.30pm. We are extremely proud of our new spaces and would like each family to have the opportunity to view these.
CBCA Shortlist
The Children’s Book Council of Australia has just released the 2021 Shortlist. This is a list of six books in each category including picture books, early childhood books and longer, more involved novels. See the attached list for the 2021 Shortlist. Later in the year the winners for each category will be announced.
Shelf Talkers
The School Library Association of Victoria has introduced a program where students in schools can review newly published books. We have joined this program, with the first book being read: Tell Me Why Archie Roach (Younger Readers edition). You can see the reviews here
From SLAV:
Shelftalkers has been established by SLAV as a platform for young people, at both primary and secondary school level, who love books and reading. It offers a home for the sharing of written reviews with their peers and also an insight into the opinions of others.
Shelftalkers hopes to empower young readers, to give them a sense of ownership and autonomy in sharing their thoughts about what they read and what is being published onto the market for them. It is our hope that Shelftalkers will encourage and engage young readers in reading and writing, beyond the classroom.
Shelftalkers offers an exciting engagement tool for libraries, library staff and publishers to facilitate discussion of both established and forthcoming titles and ways to promote better reading and writing in your school community. It also offers professionals working with young people a window into their opinions that can underpin targeted promotional and engagement programs.
Shelftalkers is a website maintained and moderated by SLAV staff.

Dr Caleb Dawson Medical Researcher : Lecture 24/4/21 Wyton Theatre
Science and Art : Cell Photography
Dr Caleb Dawson, a medical researcher from Melbourne who uses microscopy to study breast cancer tissue will be conducting a lecture on 24th April, 7pm in Wyton Theatre. The focus of this lecture covers many aspects of the VCE Biology course additionally enlightening students as to possible science career paths. Free Entry.
Bio
Caleb is a medical researcher from Melbourne who uses microscopy to study the breast and how it changes in breast cancer. He approaches science in a unique way; through a Christian faith and with an artistic eye. His weapon of choice against disease is 3D fluorescence microscopy, where multicoloured dyes and lasers are brought to bear on organs to create 3D images. These images provide a clear view of what is happening in our bodies at a microscopic scale, helping to make discoveries that will one day improve lives. They are also beautiful artworks that reveal intricate landscapes and something of the creative. Caleb will display these artworks and talk about the biology behind them and how they have contributed to science.

A week of fun at Year Nine Camp
At the end of Term One Year Nine students went on camp to Cape Bridgewater.
Year Nine camp at Cape Bridgewater was a lot of fun. The students and staff participated in some challenging and fun activities throughout the week which included: Abseiling, Caving, Surfing, Hike and Sandboarding. A trivia / activities night and evening of beach games filled the evening time. Many positive relationships were developed during the week between the staff and students and I think it has set the Year Nine Community up for a real positive rest of our year.
