Principal's Message
Dear Emmanuel College Families,
I hope you and your family survived the impact of the fierce weather over the last 24 hours. It wasn’t the ideal way to commence Spring!
Mercy Education Frayne Festival
Last Friday I joined teachers and students attending the annual Mercy Education Frayne Festival. Established in 1996, the festival is named after Mother Ursula Frayne, leader of the first group of Sisters of Mercy to arrive in Australia from Ireland in 1846. Mother Ursula Frayne personally established two schools, first in Perth and later in Melbourne, while other Sisters of Mercy followed and established or operated schools across the continent. It’s one of those extraordinary stories that belong to the pioneering days of this nation and for which we continue to reap rich rewards today.
The Frayne Speech Festival is a gathering of students from schools, founded in the traditions of Mercy Education. It provides an opportunity for spirited competition in debating, public speaking and voice choir and fosters a sense of unity across the schools. Emmanuel College entered teams in the public speaking and debating competitions as well as the very demanding Voice Choir section. Congratulations to all the students who took part, especially the voice choir which at the end of the day was the runner up. Our thanks go to Catherine Ryan and Brigid Foard for their time and expertise coaching the students, and to Chamon Vogels who attended on the day. As always, we appreciate Jaffa’s driving getting us there and home again safely.
Year 9 Immersion
Best wishes to the staff and students attending the final year nine immersions for 2024. I sincerely hope we see an end to this weather to enable those students camping under canvas a positive experience. If there are additional weather warnings for tomorrow or coming days, the extent of the resilience experiences will be reviewed and parents notified.
Parent, Student, Teacher Conferences
Parents and guardians will have access to term three interim reports from today. I encourage you to view this timely update and to consider making a booking for parent, student, teacher conferences scheduled for Wednesday 11 September 11.00am-6.00pm. Please note this day is an independent learning day for all students. P/S/T conferences open tomorrow and close on Tuesday 10 September at 4pm.
I trust yesterday was a very happy day for the father in our community and all the men who provide fatherly care and love to young people.
Let us be grateful for:
Fathers who have tried to balance the demands of work, relationships, and children
Fathers who, lacking a good model for a father, have worked to become a good father.
Fathers who could not always be there for their children, but who continue to offer those children their love and support.
Fathers whose children are adopted, and whose love and support has offered healing.
Fathers who, as stepfathers, freely choose the obligation of fatherhood and earned their stepchildren's love and respect.
Fathers who have lost a child to death and continue to hold the child in their heart.
Let us be grateful for:
Those men who have no children but cherish the next generation as if they were their own.
The men who have "fathered" us in their role as mentors and guides.
The men who are about to become fathers; may they openly delight in their children.
And let us be grateful for:
Those fathers who have died, but live on in our memory and whose love continues to nurture us.
Saint Joseph, pray for us. May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and Edmund Rice guide us in all we do.
Amen.

A Message from Mrs Claire Wrigley
It’s almost Youth Fest!
The whole of September marks a special time to celebrate our amazing young people in the community. There's plenty of events planned, with some for the whole family to enjoy! It kicked off with our Warrnambool and Moyne Youth Showcase event on Sunday at the F Project (224 Timor St) from 10 and to 2 pm. The day included the opening of Artolescence and Rubbish Repurposed Art Exhibitions, Young Makers market, live music and art workshops.
Check out the full calendar of events attached. For more information about each event, visit Whats On Warrnambool and search for the event.
After Sundays Youth Showcase event, Artolescence Exhibition will be open until the 15 September, while Rubbish Repurposed Art Exhibition (in the Youth Space) will be open to view on Wednesday 4 September (10am -1 pm), Thursday 5 September (11 am – 3 pm) and Saturday 7 September (11 am- 2 pm).
Transition to Summer Uniform
As per similar arrangements of last year. From Monday, 9 September students will be able to choose to wear summer or winter uniforms based on the weather conditions. This transition period will continue into term 4 for the first 4 weeks. As of Monday, 4 November, all students will be required to be in summer uniform.
Students are not to wear a combination of summer or winter uniforms. PE uniform remains the same and is only to be worn by Year 7-9 students on the day you have PE to school. Students must be in full summer or full winter uniform depending on the weather. At all times the blazer must be worn to and from school, regardless of winter or summer uniform.
Please ensure that your child’s uniform is in good order and fitting well, in particular the length of the dress needs to be appropriate with hem just above the knee cap.
Homeroom/Mentor group Planning for 2025
The year level teams will begin preparing homerooms and mentor groups for 2025. The year level team invests a great deal of time and discernment in developing homeroom groups for a new school year.
We are aware that moving into a new school year creates for some students a level of anxiety, however it is important to understand that we are dealing with a number of variables that influence the makeup of homeroom and mentor groups. Such variables include elective choices, students with individual learning plans, teacher observation and feedback and classroom dynamic, and in the senior school the student’s house group. Year 9 students entering senior school are to remain in their house group.
As students transition through the school, we also encourage them to work with other students and become less reliant on being with their friends, and as such build resilience to become independent learners.
In the senior school students will be in a vertical homeroom structure with students from their house group from Year 10 to 12, whilst all academic classes are entirely dependent upon their subject selection. Students currently in Year 9 will not be moved out of their current house for senior school. Generally speaking we do not put siblings into the same mentor group however, if you would like to request siblings to be together, please email the Year 9 coordinator.
If you have any concerns about your child’s 2025 homeroom/mentor group, please communicate with their current Year Level Coordinator in writing by Friday 20 September, via email so we can keep your concerns on record.
This way we can hopefully address these concerns before homeroom/mentor group lists are
published, as after publication, changes become very difficult to accommodate. Changes will not be made unless there are extenuating circumstances and a process for review would be followed by senior college leadership. Requests for specific teachers cannot be accommodated in fairness to all students.

Emmanuel Day Friday Sept 20
A highlight on our school calendar is Emmnauel Day. The purpose of this day is to come together as a school community to celebrate and have some fun as a school community and to raise awareness and much needed funds for two organisations, Edmund Rice foundation which supports the Ruben Centre in Nairobi and Mercy Works Projects. These organisations do fantastic work with some of the most vulnerable communities here in Australia and overseas.
The theme this year is 'Emmanuel through the decades'. Each year level has been allocated a decade to come dressed up for the day!
Year 7 - dress up in 70's
Year 8 - dress up in 80's
Year 9 - dress up in 90's
Year 10 & Year 11 - dress in 2000's
The tradition continues with Year 12 dressing up in their own theme for the day!
To ensure the smooth running of the day, students are required to purchase a wristband enabling access to all activities. An early bird special for $10 (+50c Trybooking fee + EFT processing fee) via trybooking will allow access to over 20 activities with no more to pay, some of which include an inflatable basketball, soccer, billiards and sumo wrestling suits, Silent disco, and a chill-out games zone After Sunday 15 September, tickets will be $15 (+50c Trybooking fee + EFT processing fee) ). There will be prizes to be won at some of the activities, and for best dressed students, the day will conclude with the much anticipated ‘Emmanuel’s Got Talent’.
Tickets on sale please access via try-booking link - https://www.trybooking.com/CULNZ

Interim Reports / PST Conferences / Wellbeing Conferences
Today, Monday 2 September at midday, Interim Reports will be released to parents and students. These will be available to view on PAM and will provide a snapshot of your child’s progress throughout term three.
As per our college calendar, the Parent / Student / Teacher Conferences will be held from 11 am till 6 pm on Wednesday 11 September. Bookings will open for the conferences next Tuesday 3 September at 4 pm and will close a week later at 4 pm the day before the conferences are held. On the day of the conferences, students will have an Independent Learning Day from home, where students can follow the classes that they would normally have during the day. Some work will be posted on their Google Classroom to compliment what is being taught at the moment. No rolls will be taken and no direct teacher access. Although some work will be left to complete that day, students are still strongly encouraged to be present at the conferences either face to face or online, wherever possible. A reminder to Year 12 parents that there is an English SAC occurring that morning and Year 12 students are to turn up to school by 8:55 am and assemble in the canteen undercroft. They will finish their assessment around 10:30 am.
Within the Interim Report, a conference is always ‘welcomed’, however some teachers may have ‘requested’ a conference to be held. Again, we will provide face to face conferences within the Emmanuel Centre and also the opportunity to carry these out online via Microsoft Teams. The Team’s link provided on PAM is the link parents need to click and the process should be quite smooth from there. All parents completing conferences online, will be placed in a waiting bay and staff will let you in at or very close to the time of the conference. Please ensure your microphone and camera are on. The necessity to be on time both face to face and online is crucial to the running of the day.
Please also note, that like the conferences earlier in the year at the end of term one, Fit4Life team leader Rachele Sloane will make herself available with 10 minute timeslots throughout the day. Bookings can be made to discuss all things health, wellbeing, social emotional development, how the team works as well as strategies and support that can be offered. There are 32 X 10 minute available times to book if parents would like to take up the opportunity. Bookings can be made on PAM and is a separate booking portal to that of the PST Conferences.

Contemporary Band
Emmanuel College's After School Rock Band: A Fusion of Talent, Passion and Fun!
Every Monday afternoon for the last 3 years The Stage has hosted the Contemporary Band program, which is coordinated by Music Staff member Adam Burgess-Metal. The current band lineup consists of Emmanuel students Akira Fish-Laird on vocals, Satwika Sivasankar on keys, Bridget Cameron on bass, and Hayley Gottliebsen on drums.
The main goal of this program is for each student to discover “their voice” in relation to their instrument. This gives the band a unique sound and breathes life into the material they play. The goal isn’t perfection, but rather self expression and how this works in a collaborative environment such as a band.
Each member brings a unique flavour with their diverse musical influences.
Akira's soulful voice adds depth and emotion to their performances, while Satwika's keyboard melodies weave intricate layers of harmony. Bridget's bass guitar provides a solid foundation, anchoring the band's rhythm with finesse, while Hayley's drumming drives the energy of their music to new heights.
Beyond their individual talents, what truly sets this band apart is their unwavering passion for music, which forms bonds that transcend the stage. Their shared love for music fuels their collaborative spirit.
As they continue their musical journey together, one thing is certain - this band is a testament to the transformative power of music and the enduring bonds forged through shared passion.

Frayne Speech Festival
The power and beauty of the spoken word was on show again this year, through Emmanuel’s participation in the Mercy Schools Frayne Speech Festival. The event was held at Our Lady of Mercy College, Heidelberg. Emmanuel entered a Debating Team, a Public Speaker and a Voice Choir.
The Debating team won their debate but did not make it to the final based on points.
The Voice Choir were runners up at this year's festival. They performed two poems: ‘Life Cycle’ by Bruce Dawe and ‘Seed’ by Maxine Beneba Clarke. The Frayne festival is a unique competition which embodies a spirited and joyful public speaking experience.
The students who represented Emmanuel did so with enthusiasm, good humor and perseverance.
Many thanks to Brigid Foard for her work with the Voice Choir and to Chamon Vogels for stepping in at the last minute to attend the trip and assist the seniors with their speech and debates.

Year 8 Boys State Football - Ballarat
Quarter & Semi Final
For the quarter and semi final of Year 8 football we travelled to Ballarat on Wednesday 21st August On a beautiful footy ground in Sebastapol we took on a very strong team from St Joseph's College in Echuca. They had two players associated with Richmond Football Club academy program. Kane Parsons and Jameson Nelson were given the jobs to quell their influence on the game. Both were selfless in their approach, with both players influence on the game being reduced significantly. We led all game but couldn’t quite break our oppositions spirit. We were able to hold off several momentum swings in the game to walk away 8 point winners. The boys commitment to the contested ball, their ability to move the ball with high quality skills and make the correct decision at various stages of the game was the difference between the two highly talented teams. Our second opponent for the day was Western Heights from Geelong. It was evident early that they weren’t bringing the same intensity as our first opponent. We were able to dominate large parts of the game and walk away clear winners. We now move into the State Final against Rowville Secondary College.
Grand Final
On Wednesday 28 August at the Tony Sheehan Oval in Bundoora our young footballers were beaten in an exciting finish. We started slow, I think we were a little overawed by the occasion. We managed to defend really well and stay in the game only being down by 9 points at quarter time. In the second quarter some of our gun midfields went to work (Hamish Williams and Fergus Reaburn) and we were able to swing the momentum our way. Rowville Secondary College (a Melbourne based sports school from the eastern suburbs) scored a goal right on half time to lead by 10 points. The third quarter was another arm wrestle and the margin was again 10 points at three quarter time. We had all the play in the last quarter, kicking a goal with 90 seconds on the clock to bring the margin to 2 points. Unfortunately that sprinkle of luck you need to win those close games didn’t come today and ended up falling short by 2 points in trying conditions (windy). The Year 8 boys were an incredibly focused, coachable group. Timmy Hunt and I couldn’t have been prouder of how they not only played today, but the way the conducted themselves over the past 24 hours. A huge thanks goes out to Stephen Williams and Oscar Pollock for their support.

International Literacy Day
On September 8 countries around the world will acknowledge International Literacy Day, as a one of the UNESCO International Days.
Since 1967, the annual celebrations of International Literacy Day (ILD) have taken place on 8 September around the world to remind policymakers, practitioners, and the public of the critical importance of literacy for creating more literate, just, peaceful, and sustainable society.
Literacy is a fundamental human right for all. It opens the door to the enjoyment of other human rights, greater freedoms, and global citizenship. Literacy is a foundation for people to acquire broader knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, and behaviours to foster a culture of lasting peace based on respect for equality and non-discrimination, the rule of law, solidarity, justice, diversity, and tolerance and to build harmonious relations with oneself, other people and the planet.
This year, ILD will be celebrated under the theme of "Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace".
There is a pressing need to harness the transformative potential of literacy for promoting mutual understanding, social cohesion, and peace.
UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The organisation seeks to build peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences, and Culture.
CBCA Book Award Winners
The Children’s Book Council Award Winners were announced in August.
Not sure what to read next? You may like to read one of the award-winning books.
In the Younger Readers Category, the winner of the Award is: Scar Town written by Tristan Bancks.
The CBCA judges say .....
This book tells a classic story in a thrilling and accessible way for readers aged 10-14. It commands the reader’s attention from its enthralling beginning, throughout an action-packed plot development and a dramatic conclusion. The setting of the drowned town is evocatively described, creating a foreboding mood that enhances the plot of the novel. The young protagonists are well-developed and have authentic responses to events, while the flaws of the adult characters are realistic, allowing readers to explore and extend their thinking about difficult relationships and situations. The mystery and thriller conventions are expertly balanced with Will’s character development as he navigates loss, criminal activity, corruption, and loyalty to family and friends.

Healthy Study Habits Video
We encourage you to watch this special report (see link below) about how parents can help their child to develop healthy study habits.
This video serves as a reinforcement of what our Year 11 students have been focusing on during their study skills sessions. As the video emphasizes, developing healthy study habits is foundational for academic success, echoing the strategies we've been discussing in class. The importance of creating a distraction-free study environment, establishing a consistent study routine, and balancing academic demands with a healthy lifestyle aligns directly with the advice we've been sharing. By integrating these habits into their daily lives, our students can manage stress more effectively, enhance their learning, and build the discipline necessary for achieving their academic goals.

Year 12 Food Studies Excursion to Volcanic Produce
The end of the term is fast approaching for our Year 12 Food Studies students and it has been a busy time in the classroom. The focus of learning has been on issues affecting food systems in terms of ethics, sustainability and food sovereignty. The excursion to Volcanic Produce in Illowa has provided students with an excellent opportunity to visualise the paddock to plate process of vegetable production. Students braved the elements to hear and learn all about the process of growing spray free vegetables.
Many key issues of Australia’s food system were discussed and it was fantastic to hear about the production methods and techniques Volcanic produce adopt to bring fresh, high quality veggies to the local community. Students weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and we were very fortunate to bring back a large tub of freshly picked vegetables to the school kitchen. Students cooked up a feast with a range of roasted vegetable share platters on the menu. A huge thank you to Ben and Sarah Pohlner for welcoming us to their farm and providing such as valuable experience of the paddock to plate process. Our class has been looking forward to this excursion all year and it was particularly special as Abby (Ben and Sarah’s daughter) is a student in our class.

Youth Allowance Evening
We are very fortunate to have secured Mr John Peglar from Sinclair Wilson to present some tips and information in relation to dependent and independent youth allowance. An information evening will be held on Wednesday 4 September from 7.00 pm at the Wynton Theatre.
From experience we know that this can be a very confusing yet important task for parents as their child considers moving into tertiary education (this also includes students considering a Gap Year). This can at times require relocation to another area and incur large expenses. We are inviting parents/guardians of year 10,11&12 to this very informative evening, as pre planning in the years prior to students undertaking tertiary study can be very beneficial.
