Principal's Message

Dear Emmanuel College Families,

Awards Night Success
Congratulations to this year’s Emmanuel Award winners. Last night, award winners and their families joined College staff in the Emmanuel Centre to celebrate the achievements of those who excelled, worked hard, and pushed themselves across all academic fields, as well as in the arts, and sports, or involved themselves in service and leadership opportunities. The success of the Emmanuel community arises from the participation of so many in the life of the school, demonstrating in the words of the 2023 college theme, Courage to Climb. This newsletter lists all 2023 award recipients.

Year 12 Achievements
We also congratulate the Year 12 class of 2023 whose results in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) were published on Monday. Emmanuel College students performed very well as seen in the following snapshot of results of the 123 students who completed a scored VCE:

  • ATAR scores above 90: 10%
  • ATAR scores above 80: 25.2%
  • ATAR scores above 70: 40%
  • ATAR scores above 60: 64.2%
  • ATAR scores above 50: 80%

The Dux of Emmanuel College in 2023 is Emily Mahony who received an ATAR ranking of 99 placing her in the top one percent in Victoria. The next two highest scores were received by Hannah Van Der Aa 98.1 and Scarlett O’Brien with a score of 96.2. So, while the top scorers last year were all boys, the girls have done it this year! Congratulations. Emily also received a perfect study score of 50 in PE, while there were 34 individual study scores above 40 (top 10% in the state) across 12 different subjects. The VCE VM Dux is Annameike Cozens who also received a scholarship from Demo Dairy supporting her 2024 study of veterinary nursing at TAFE whilst also working in the field.

The College is proud of both Emily and Annameike and their achievements. Their results in VCE and VM respectively, display the excellent outcomes Emmanuel students who work and study hard can achieve. Both students were actively involved in the life of the College demonstrating that a balanced approach to school, work, and life in general, is not only possible, but an excellent strategy whilst completing Year 12. The College congratulates the Year 12 class of 2023 who achieved excellent results again this year reflecting the supportive and encouraging culture of learning that surrounds Emmanuel students. While we understand that ATAR scores are but one measure of success, we also recognise that excellent secondary school outcomes open doors and create opportunities. It was most pleasing again in 2023 to see numerous senior students gain access to employment, traineeships, and apprenticeships enabling them to pursue their chosen pathway.

The College thanks the teaching and education support staff who worked hard completing the Year 12 journey with each of our graduands and the young people in years seven to twelve, ensuring the College remains a dynamic learning community.

Christmas Wishes
As our final newsletter of the year, I wish you and your families a blessed and joyous Christmas and a prosperous new year. We pray for all those who will be alone this Christmas and we pray for peaceful resolutions to the conflicts that trouble our world and diminish our humanity. The image below in our office window depicts Mary, Joseph at the birth of Jesus. It is a universal image depicting joy and peace: joy to the world and peace on earth. May this be our prayer and our inspiration for the final days of 2023 and the promise of the year ahead.

God of Hope; we pray for peace during this Season of Advent and the year ahead.
May families the world over know the joy that comes from deep and lasting peace.
St. Joseph: Pray for us.  May the spirit of Catherine McAuley and
Edmund Rice guide us in all we do. Amen.

Mr Peter Morgan
Principal
